I have a model 1 genesis and although I was getting a color picture with the base cables the new retrovision cables are displaying in black and white on my crt. I also tested it on my 4K TV and it only showed a limited color palette. I wanted to know if someone had experience with this issue or product and if they had a fix for it. If not I also wanted to know if the issue is most likely with the cables or with the Genesis itself. Thanks for any help with this.

The cable is probably not up to the task or something is wonky. Is your CRT compatible with both PAL & NTSC? are you connecting the cable to a full NTSC port? if there is no RGB compatibility, the image will become black & white unless you have a special cable for the task. It does not matter the quality or price, the cable needs to be specific for incompatible NTSC TV's. When I used my PS1 & PS2, the Sony cables that came with the consoles were showing black & white image, but after buying a chinese cable specially for that, I got everything colored again. I even had a PS2 monster cable that was high quality but image was still black & white.

My CRT is NTSC only as far as I'm aware. Do you know where you got your Chinese PS2 cables from? I've used sites like Aliexpress before but I find it hard to navigate which seller is legitimate without being linked to a specific seller.

You awfully gave too less information to go with so all I can do is "brute forcing" lol.

Sega Genesis belongs to an era when consoles outputs analog signal. If you have no idea what it means think it as a signal type based on pure laws of physics, so the input type and therefore the screen should be based on pure laws of physics too. Therefore for new screens that's input is not analog but digital you need analog to digital converters and cables specific for this purpose.

So you said "base cables" which seem you mean RF cable that is just one cable, old-fashioned to transmit video and audio to the TV and have Sega Genesis show up in a channel on your TV just like picking up a TV broadcast.

"The new retrovision cables" is YPbPr component cable that you say displays black and white on a CRT TV. It means your TV either doesn't support YPbPr signal or you need to manually select YPbPr via your TV settings. If it still doesn't fix anything we gotta think deeper and geronimo deep into the rabbit hole:

What it means? Black and white on CRT TV also happens when not all 3 cables are inserted on TV. Your problem is it picks up the signal but not the color information. If your CRT TV only has a yellow jack then it doesn't support component video that YPbPr is about. But if you inserted component cable to the expected component jacks and this issue happens then it may mean these 3 cables are not inserted to where they should be so gotta check it. But if everything should be the way it is then what it means?:

- The cable may be fucked.

- The Sega may be fucked.

- CRT TV may be fucked.

Then gotta use RF cable to connect your Sega to CRT TV in the way it was back then. If video is ok then we gotta assume the cable or CRT TV's jacks fucked. IDK cleaning them may work wonders. Dust is your enemy!!!

And you said of the problem with 4K TV. You gotta understand the way of "meanings can be lost in translation" between analog to digital transportation of the signal therefore you need specific convertors for it. As it is the issue of low resolution of Genesis output cannot be put correctly to modern 4K ass screen as it is that's why because especially digital scalling way of the screen may ruin the video lol. Because of this you need RetroTINK or OSSC stuff.

Another issue is Genesis outputs "limited color range of 16-235" while a modern TV works via full range of 0-255 so the signal it picks up confuses the poor modern TV lol. Via the modern TV's setting you probably need to reduce the color range via many possible options that can named in any way. It may be done even via "Video mode", "screen type", "signal change", et cetera.

This is almost certainly the issue as like you said my CRT TV only has the yellow jack for basic composite video and S-Video in the back. So it's probably my fault from a lack of research unfortunately.

Nah it's not your fault, these stuff are rocket science that "those who knows know" thing so no problem.

BTW if your SEGA Genesis wasn't model 1 I would say "hmm then we are not at total lost because your CRT TV has S-Video at back" but too bad model 1 doesn't support that jack but other models does. Around you may find S-Video convertor but they really don't work ok so you would likely ended up having black and white video issue or no video at all. The convertor stuff you can find around are usually the ones that convert stuff "technically and primitively" so that's why they are not trustable and doesn't work properly. They just wanna scam to make a sell.

Well I guess it would be easier to find a suitable CRT TV at this point or go for RetroTINK or OSSC stuff for your modern TV.

Do you know what genesis model works with S-Video? Every time I look this up for the Genesis I just see that the Genesis doesn't work with S-Video.

Oh I kinda wrote it in a way it is misleading and unclear because didn't think you would consider that option!!! In the modding scene they say what I said to mean model 1 is bad at S-video hardware mods (physically thinkering the Genesis's board) especially because they require additional stuff to make it work without video problems therefore it's common knowledge to say "model 1 doesn't support S-Video" but other models work ok with simple S-Video mods. So neither model directly just accepts a cable that would work with S-Video jack, they all require S-Video modding but model 1 requires more than that which not many people would bother with it. But still if you are into such things you may research about it especially if suitable CRT TV is hard to find for you and RetroTINK or OSSC stuff not possible to you.

Wait, are you trying to connect a component cable to a composite source? how many plugs does your cable have? if you get a retrovision cable with s-video you make sure you will get color, as long as your console is modded for it. Otherwise, try a regular composite cable. If you're still getting black & white it means your TV has some weird issue with the chroma decoding, that would explain RF adapter is working ok.
