Gen 1 has a load of weird futuristic tech shit that I think is really cool – the teleporter incident, the shady laboratory funded by Team Rocket, the electric plant, all the digital and mechanical Pokemon... I really liked the early idea in the series that Pokemon are their own distinct class of creature that, while usually existing naturally, can be interfered with and produced independently. It's an idea that's completely incongruous with the rest of the series, but I think it's cool that, prior to Gen 2, Pokemon existed in parallel to both human beings and "real" animals. It makes them seem more like monsters or youkai or something. They dropped that aspect of the franchise after Red & Blue, and I think it really took away a lot of the sci-fi mystery and intrigue surrounding those games (though the GameCube games kind of touch on it a little, which was appreciated). My personal Pokemon headcanon is that Kanto is specifically known as the most technologically-advanced of all the regions in the series, with Johto being its quirky backwards neighbour country full of hicks and Orre being the gritty criminal underworld that no decent person wants to visit.
