Super Hydlide feels almost like a 16-bit Elder Scrolls or Immersive Sim game with its character creation, day night cycle, and weight encumbrance system. Virtual Hydlide, frame-jank and FMV-weirdness aside, is purely fascinating for being a 3D Action-RPG Open-World Roguelike in 1995 on the Sega Saturn of all consoles, which is kind of crazy they even pulled it off as much as they did. They are even pretty accessible in terms of player access with most of the computer versions of Super Hydlide (Hydlide 3: The Space Memories) having different text options including English! Virtual Hydlide in its easy and normal modes have quest markers and maps so you can always keep making progress. Most reviews I noticed are based either on the Hard difficulty or the unlockable Pro Difficulty that do not have these features which I don't think gives it a completely fair wrap. The games are far from perfect but I highly recommend them for trying something different compared to other games of their respective console and eras.
