A lot of fans want sequels and remakes to long dead franchises but nowadays whenever one is announced i usually feel more dread than i do hype.

Best examples i can think of are Duke Nukem and Gex both feature larger than life characters that would have to be changed significantly in order to appeal to modern audiences. I think writes are too insecure and insincere to write either of these chapters in a way that wouldn't suck.

What about you are there any franchises you love that you wish would stay dead?

I can think of several games that I dread the inevitable remake of, like FF IX or the remaining SH games for example, but a whole series... Thief.
I'm sure they'll eventually try to reboot that series again, so definitely Thief.

The sheer respect for the player's intelligence and faith in their patience the original games had is completely incompatible with modern game design.
I'm sure the writing of a remake or whatever would homogenize a lot of the charming oddities of the writing and worldbuilding as well. Not to mention they'd probably make Garrett a flat-out hero as well.

And hell, fans have been making better stealth games using the engine of the originals than actual dev studios with a publisher budget could ever hope to manage for years and years now, so who'd even need any kind of "official" continuation anyway?

I'm so over remakes at this point, I just ignore them. If they make a brand new game to a dead IP then I'll check it out. If it sucks it doesn't really tarnish or effect the reputation of the previous games but a bad remake can give a bad first impression to an otherwise great game. As for a series I don't want to see revived, maybe Jak & Daxter. The old staff at naughty dog are long gone and the new blood only knows how to pump out movie game slop mixed in with political and social issues.

I'd say Silent Hill, but it's too late now.

I feel like most 90~00s games vibes couldn't be done nowadays and end up either too modernized or too soulless. Look at that new HoMM for example. Or the new vampire Bloodlines that doesn't even look like a RPG.

Even stuff like Mother series and Parappa would easily become some of the most annoying things if modernized.

Drakengard it's the first that comes to mind, because i'm sure it will be ruined now
Technically there's that Drakengard 1.3 novel thing. Which is awful.

All of them, if I'm being honest. Not out of dislike of a franchise, but more because I think it's hard to live up to expectations, and team chemistry is always a thing that's in flux and that shapes the end result. Even if you have the original team stay in place so people get excited for that, these are people who change with time and grow apart. Not that everything that comes out will be bad, but there have been so many forgettable revivals over the years.

Well I can write a book about it but I'll only write the ones that bothers me a lot so I wish them an eternal rest in pizza lol:

- Each Konami series because they tend to ruin it. Metal Gear and Silent Hill became a bitch.

- On the other hand Deux Ex needs a new game just for story reasons yet they shit on the series too so I don't wanna see a new game from it again.

- Need for Speed. The series died for me after Carbon and they sucking the dead horse dry. Once a great street racing series became a great disappointment long time ago.

- Vampire: The Masquerade series. 1st game was a legend, 2nd game was a legend despite how different it was but then when it comes to 3rd game, despite it's so fucking easy to develop games now + tons of people properly educated in the art of develop games and therefore there are huge job market for it they just sucky suck hard to develop a playable game. I hope the 3rd game will be cancelled for good and everyone in development will die from a curse and 4th game won't ever come. Just nope.

- Lost Horizon series. 1st game was legendary and because of it to milk it they released like one of the worst point and click game I played and why it's bad is half because of its BS bugs and half is because they just bashed random buttons on keyboard to develop that rubbish game. They may try releasing a 3rd game and I would just have a heart attack lol.

A new Virtua Striker and Tennis, along with VF6.

After the decline of simulation sports games, now is the best chance for Sega

But licencing would be too expensive and unlike fighting games that are more or less the same, players were conditioned playing simulation games for almost 2 decades.

They will not go well.

No second thoughts.

eternal darkness for the gamecube... i think its charm will never be replicated because first off, it's horrible to play on an emulator and why would i bother when:

the graphics aren't blurry, you can play around with the brightness, not to mention you have a billion savestates so you don't need to worry about even triggering the sanity effects.

playing it on my crappy old 13 inch CRT, whose colors were starting to drain around the edges, in a dark room with pure dread as my companion was the best experience ever and a remaster/remake would not do it justice.

on top of that, who in the current day and age would fall for the sanity effects?

Road Rash. It's one of my all-time favorite series of games, but I feel like if they tried to reboot it or bring it back, they'd just mess it up.

The 90s attitude was key. Even the 16-Bit games had dialogue bits between the different bikers and some tongue-in-cheek cutscenes. I think a remake would try to hard too make certain characters sympathetic, or just focus too much on backstories, in general. In the OG games, everyone had an edge, because 90s! No further explanation needed 😎

Plus, they'd really have to tone-down the humor to meet modern audiences and avoid controversy. It just wouldn't hit the same. Can't make fun of cops anymore without someone getting their shorts in a knot...

The Elder Scrolls. Honestly, after 14 years since the last release, I don't believe the sixth game will be for your generation what Skyrim was in its time. I think the peak of the franchise was with the 2011 title. ESO was depressing, and the fact that they're releasing a remake of Oblivion before sharing any information about the next title is concerning.

Judging by what we got with Starfield, I have no positive expectations for anything coming out of Bethesda under Microsoft's wing.

Honestly I struggle to think of a game franchise I love that has not been remade or brought back in some form yet lol. I think I will simply say Shadow Hearts though.

I think they should have stopped after 4. I think 4 perfected the series but 5 made it more accessible losing a lot of the original appeal in the proses.

I love Unreal Tournament but sometimes i thank god that the franchise is dead.
If a new UT game drops in the current times, is gonna be a generic bland boring shooter, probably.
I think the problem with doing an unreal/quake3 style shooter is that its very hard to monetize in a way that will make publishers and players happy.
