This is a thread for awesome old games that you've taken a while to get around to playing.
Personally, I've been playing S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Shadow of Chernobyl and I've been loving it. Obviously you have to quick save a lot lol, but the combat and exploration is pretty top-notch for it's time and I like how little damage body shots do in comparison to head shots. It really rewards skilled gun play and makes landing a good shot really satisfying.
I've also been playing F.E.A.R. which is easily a top 10 fps game of all time, some of the tightest gameplay in the genre with awesome enemy A.I. that can scare you more than the actual horror set pieces lol.
Slightly off, because I haven't played them yet.... but I've never played a Resident Evil game.
And kind of Ninja Gaiden. But I haven't been able to finish it yet. I started Ninja Gaiden Black for the first time earlier this year. I like elements of it a lot, but it's also too hard for me and I rage quit hard. I might get back to it in a few months.
I've been revisiting old PS1 games that I never had the opportunity to play before.
From all the games I played, Valkyrie Profile and Ace Combat 3: Electropshere (the complete, japanese release, not the international version) are now among my top 10. They are not only awesome games but both of them have masterfull storytelling.
I have quite a few, as I didn't appreciate RPGs until I was older. I ended up missing out on things like Final Fantasy VI/VII among others when they were new.
Fallout 1, 2 and New Vegas. I got really into it when 3 came out. Only played 3 and 4. Last year there was a big sale so I got 1, 2, and New Vegas. Holy shit was Fallout grittier and darker in the older games. The ending and entire plot and enemies in the first game? Chef's kiss. The endings made me feel terrible, which is perfect for that setting.
I missed out on Sooooo many JRPGs throughout the years, mainly The Legend Of Heroes: Trails In The Sky and Ys Seven.
Add to that Flight Action games like Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere, Snoopy VS. The Red Baron and M.A.C.H: Modified Air Combat Heroes.
I can apply this knowledge to quite literally any game I've emulated since 2020. Especially MadWorld. I was too young for it, but I genuinely feel like I could've attempted to save the franchise with a purchase.
But I'll name specifically games that I could've played earlier in my life (no fan translations that I literally couldn't have played, no other M rated games as I've only been an adult for 5 years, no games from before I was born, only stuff on Nintendo consoles both because that was all I had and also for sake of brevity)
Undertale: I played this but like 5 years after its release. The Undertale hatedom really grabbed me as a contrarian teenager and I missed out on a fun game for years because of it. Same actually happened to Earthbound
Xenoblade X: I didn't get a Wii U until it was damn near on its last legs so I initially didn't experience XCX. Then again, the late release also meant I never played Xenoblade 1.
Advance Wars 3 & 4: Never saw these games in my local stores. Dunno if I would've bought them if I did since I didn't really know what a SRPG was until Byleth joined Smash, but still
Etrian Odyssey: To this day, I have yet to see any of these games pop up in a game store, even after the remasters dropped, nada
Custom Robo Arena: kicking myself for seeing this in stores and never picking it up
every Fire Emblem from Radiant Dawn to 3 Houses: I have a friend who's loved this franchise from day one and I used to make fun of him for it. Nowadays, I'm like
The 9 Dragon Quest games available on DS and 3DS: Like every American, I was infected with the "What the FUCK is a Dragon Quest?" syndrome.
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon's other games: For how much I meme hype up Gates to Infinity, I really wish I played the other games earlier. Gates ended up being the only one I physically bought because I straight up didn't know the others existed for years lmao
Pokemon Conquest: Me and a friend kept passing this one up, I can't remember WHY though
7th Dragon Code VFD: I actually saw this in stores once, but I spotted the three, and I tend to hesitate an established franchise without starting from the beginning
Stella Glow: remember when I said I used to make fun of my friend for playing Fire Emblem? Well that's why I didn't pick this game up
The Operation Rainfall trilogy: Didn't know about this movement until years later. I would've jumped to play The Last Story especially if I knew it's history. I actually do sometimes see The Last Story in Gamestop sometimes but my Wii U has been collecting dust since 2015 (no it literally is covered in dust now, I'm worried to play it)
(reached attachment limit, will reply with the others)
Mega Man Star Force trilogy: This one wasn't really my fault cause I didn't know what a Mega Man was until Smash 4. I did see the first game in stores (Dragon specifically) but never the second and third
Scurge Hive: Another victim of circumstances. Never saw it in stores
Sonic Colors DS: I used to be Sonic Colors's hugest dickrider. Now I'm it's biggest hater, I should've played peak instead
Sonic Riders Zero Gravity: I dunno, I just never got to buying this. I played it once too, when I was younger, someone brought it into aftercare for the public to play for the day.
Shantae 2-4: Yeah I just straight up didn't know this franchise existed until I saw people mass request her after Ultimate dropped. The first game I played was a Switch port of Half Genie Hero...in like 2022
Various fan games: I had a Windows PC for a while when I was younger but never used it for anything more than Minecraft. Then again, it was a Dell, so you know that shit could barely run Minecraft.
The other day i watched a video essay about Radiata Stories and by the end of it I couldn't stop thinking "If I played this game when I was 14 it would have COMPLETELY upended my understanding of video games." At the time I was really big on Nier, Tales Of, and Metal Gear. Knowing now how Radiata's branching narratives play out, it would have fit right in on my shelf of weird subversive war games.
Omori is a game that I feel, had I played earlier in life, I would have understood myself and those around me a whole lot better. Taught me a lot about empathy, something I tend to lack. I don't regret playing it for a second. If I could forget it, and play it all over again, I would.
I wish played Xenogears, Megaman Legends and Tail Concerto when I was a Kid
while I knew Xenogears and Megaman Legends for some reason I never played them(maybe for Megaman Legends was because to people saying that has bad gameplay) until I was 19 and DUDE! I really loved them that even inspired me to continue Solatorobo
for Tail Concerto I discovered its existence because to a deleted video about its cancelled sequel made by a friend(which I'm not longer friends with him) and I don't played it until 2023(same year that I played Xenogears and Megaman Legends) and I really like it despite certain parts if I played Tail Concerto as a kid, I have the feeling that Alicia, Stare and Terria could made me a furry more than Berri from Conker Bad Fur Day
The first Suikoden. Bought it about the same time as Final Fantasy VII. Suikoden just didn't seem as impressive at the time. Didn't go back to playing it until after I played later games on the PS2. I missed out on playing it earlier.
I didn't touch Mass Effect until around 2015. The market had been so saturated with "your choices matter" games that I completely ignored them until an evangelist for the game convinced me to give it a shot. I love them
Well, it is not just a game, but a complete franchise. I used to think every anime style game was turn based (which is the definition of boring for me) but when a was searching something new to play I discoered a game with a real time action gameplay, that game, was "Tales of berseria". I finish it on last december and I loved it. Now I'm playing Tales of arise, graces f and Xilia and I got symphonia remastered, vesperia, xilia 2 and zestiria ready to play. I absolutely regret no have playing tales of before, but better late than never.
