Games that make you cry.

As in games that manage to get an emotional reaction from you.

In my case it is nier. (Not automata the original) I was so invested in the story and characters it's one of the best stories ever written and nothing so far has effected me in such a way.
Yes. Nier 1 is the saddest game I ever played but the actual sadness is because of the awareness you get when you play the new game plus. In that context this game's "true story" implemented into new game plus system in a good and necessary way so it makes the 1st playthrough actually like "half of the game".

In that regard I think for some games new game plus is necessary because there are lots of things you cannot implement into 1st playthrough for various reasons. For example it wouldn't make sense to distract players with deep complex part of the lore and characters' past if it doesn't actually offer necessary part of the game because not all players will care about the story and characters enough to deep dive into it, therefore that's where new game plus is useful. However lots of games actually have a barely useful new game plus that make you regret starting it lol.

Well to answer this thread: 2nd saddest game I ever played was Dragon Quest IX. The game is constantly sad and it's not actually because of generic human suffering. The game constantly finds a way to make you sad and it goes beyond of classic Shakespearean tragedy. Perhaps it goes beyond of human POV of what bad can happen to a human the game is valuable to experience because despite you are a human you can relate to the non-human aspect of the situations.

Well these games really made me tear up but other than these there were sad games sure but not enough to even blink my eyes lol.

These are experiences I actively try to seek out. Final Fantasy 9 probably got me both tearing up and cheering aloud more often and more intensely than almost any game I’ve played. Dragon Quest 5 as well. Gotta leave the door to your heart open if you want it satisfied.

Drakengard 1, ending A, anguish of an unsmiling watcher.

Caims reaction in that ending mirrored my own. The only ending that genuinely made me feel emotional, finished hundreds of games throughout my life, this was the only one to make me feel this way. Felt it when I played it in my early teens and again a few years ago as a grown ass man.

All of Yoko Taros works are tear jerkers though, it's almost a gift of his alongside the bleak melancholic nature of his works. Drakengard 3 is up there with all of these except most fans did not play past the first "sister" and gave up on it. Just as great as his other works but this shows his sense of humour and that seemed to be particularly polarising. Imagine Kaine's characterisation but build a whole game around that dialled up to 11. Mainly sex/perversion based humour and copious amounts swearing for humorous reasons(much like Kaine), I'd imagine if the swearing didn't put many off, the sex stuff did. Characters fetishes are a constant talking point.

Prudes ruined drakengard 3, because the gameplay was what could typically expected of cavia, but a more linear musou like experience. The original drakengard really didn't age well though outside it's story and chracters, no way it's getting remade either what it's subject matter. The music in the stages are shit tier and the gameplay is a stiff musou, dragon combat was ace though. Since it was done by the ace combat team.
Kingdom Hearts 3, I cried at how much mental pain Nomura’s writing caused me.
Classic example of an artist is not always so in every field, he should only lift a pen to daw, never write.

I really need to get around to playing DQ 9, I really really do. I've finished all of them bar 7, 9 and 11.

Honestly so many great games' greatness is undermined just because the creator is a pervert. In that regard Drakengard 1 is beyond the topic of "it didn't age well", I prefer that low quality rubbish that has higher sense of art over today's pornographic games because they have sexual elements that shouldn't have existed because it ruins the game itself because the game is not primitive simple shit but they put "pervert fan service BS" into games therefore ruining the quality of the games.

For example despite how much I like Nier 1, the creator's bedroom joke and pervert fantasies were not welcome. It literally shit into serious deep aspect of the story when a woman whose in her underwears tags along with you. The game developers has to comprehend the fact that your art will be ignored by people who love deep stuff when you make the game have primitive BS, and then if you wanna use primitive BS to sell the game then the primitive people you attract won't care about your deep story. So play Nier 1 for sexual BS, you won't even play new game plus and even if you had you wouldn't care. And then when you wanna enjoy a deep story the moment the woman in her underwear tags along you will think "oh another BS pervert game" and stop playing the game. That's why it's hard to even recommend Nier 1 to people. On the other hand all we can do is "play Drakengard 1 and experience its some endings and then if you care better play Nier 1 because despite how BS the game is it will be worth playing its new game plus".

In that regard Drakengard 1 is an okay game and it will always be okay while the moment Nier 1 was released it was not an okay game requiring a decent remake that removes low level Japanese player fan service BS lol.

Since Nier Automata BS and why creator's pervertism unleashed lol I honesly ignored other Drakengard games, kinda same as Hideo Kojima's games at this point. Both these men love to add their sexual fetishes into their games making me cringe playing them lol.

I agree; overall it's very lighthearted and funny!

Makes the hard hitting moments hit even harder for me.
At least for me.
Mhm, players get used to how funny the Mother series are and therefore despite how wacky the series are you get used to the not-so-serious heartwarming aspects and all therefore it makes negative aspects hits you hard like a critical hit in a super effective way when the game suddenly gets so serious like the sudden rainstorm during a lovely picnic in a nice weather comparing to already sad games that you already guard up for the next sadness wave therefore they can't hit you that hard lol. This is actually a basic way for emotional impact in stories by sudden emotional shift from positivity to negativity so such stuff would naturally hits hard!!!

Legend of zelda majora's mask: kafei side quest

this was only time I feel so bad for NPCs on game. Kiling gwindolin made me sad too but not made me cry.

I don't think I ever cried playing video games, but there are a lot of times where I almost cried but didn't in the end. One of the recent ones is Tales of Rebirth in the PSP where the main character was determined to do a suicidal plan and told the other party members to leave him behind if things turn south. then they were all like "fuck you, if you're planning to die, I'll go wake you up and beat you again myself" or "don't say stupid things like that, we'll never leave you behind." If there is one thing that can make me cry it's kindness.

Things relating to human sexuality do not degrade a works significance by any means, after all, many great renaissance works involved literal nudes and the church went around breaking all the penises off the statues and replacing them with leaves. though it will say it can sour one's view point on them depending on how it is perceived.

Johnathan Ross's Japanarama covers quite a bit of this stuff , it was shown during the early 2000's and another series a few years later, it shows just just how open Japan is in that way. Is great viewing if you're curious about aspects of Japanese culture that aren't really spoken about much. It should be available somewhere on the internet.

People are typically quite open about their fetishes, perversions etc. in the Japan, The "culture" in Japan around things pertaining to human sexuality sensuality etc., "health services", soaplands etc., It's also a lot like Amsterdam in parts of Japanese cities but without the weed.

Hideo Kojima and Yoko Taro putting this stuff in their work and anyone finding it off-putting is a type of culture shock. So basically, there's just generally a lot more of this kind of thing in Japanese media on average. Sexuality or sex appeal being utilised in some way.

Sexuality makes a lot of money in general, though It goes without saying that 2b's behind going viral had no small part in the games sales. Yoko Taro is a lot more famous now as a result of a rendering of a woman's ass. It what we got with 2b's ass is what is legendary about nier automata. he's since done nothing big in terms of projects though. ironic as it's the most money he's ever made.

With all this in mind, I absolutely loved Drakengard 3, easily the funniest game I ever played as I have a similar sense of humour for the most part. That all said, I understand why someone would find it extremely off-putting.

I've argued with someone on personality database before as "imagine giving up on Nier because Kaine says slurs and swear words", that actually caused said person to give it a try again :D, basically Kaine would be just as off-putting to some, tolerance is probably the best way to put it and that can affect someone's enjoyment of something to a large degree.

I am a drakengard 3 apologist! Sue me :loldog

Chrono Cross, multiple times
Final Fantasy IV, multiple times
I'm sure there's others, but those two especially come to mind.

Super Sadmaster 5: Cry-sis of the Tragedyville was really sad
When the heroine Tearia died giving birth and then her newborn baby gave her life to protect the world I cried

No joke though, I was really sad as a kid when Alys died in Phantasy Star IV.

I am not the type of person who cries very easily. However, "Unreal Life's" end game really got me.
