For me, I immediately think of Ridge Racer Type 4. First off, I listen to the soundtrack almost every day. The overall aesthetic is so sleek and stylish as well. The package drew me in, and man did I get addicted!

Getting good at power sliding and drifting felt so amazing. Blasting past everybody to the sick music on those beautiful, pastoral courses and cityscapes was just an awesome vibe. I come back to this game frequently. I never really get into racing games except for kart racers haha. But this one is TOO good.

I'll also randomly get into a basketball team and building a team through a season.

What about y'all?

Rebel Galaxy.
I've never been one for space simulation or games centered around tracking economy and trade goods. But the feel of the game and the impeccable soundtrack really drew me into playing a space trucker. Dodging pirates and delivering the goods to some bluegrass while watching the stars smear during FTL was very addictive.
Honestly its turned me onto the whole genre, now I've got to play Wing Commander and the X series

I think this thread was made before

Anyway, Wipeout Pure. I'm a fan of racing games but I used to be not a fan of Wipeout games. It's just impossible when I first play the PSP one, even though it's not even "Rapier" speed, that was almost one year ago

But now, even something after Rapier just feels so slow. It really improved my decision making and it feels like I got a superpower (seeing the future and all that). Even what's supposed to be one of the hardest tracks to race on, feels like a cakewalk

I thought it might have been, but after digging through 15 pages to double check, I didn't see it haha. So I figured it at least needed a refesh/ update.

Okay yes Wipeout is another racing series I LOVE. The freaking music!

I'd say idle games. They suck you in and keep wanting the number to get higher. Idle Reactor/Reactor Idle, Hero Clicker... too many to name.

Rebel Galaxy.

Mhmm. The space travel isn't full 3D 6-degrees-of-freedom, think of it more like you're on a ship since you can't leave the level pane.

Good game, needs a few tweaks like more weapons and storage options and side quests.

I have fond memories of NFL Blitz and Gameday 98. have not touched a Pigskin game since and from what I heard the Madden Desert consumes all.

Probably a cliche pick but NFL Blitz and NBA Jam are always a good time despite not really caring for sports games. Alot of old arcade style sports games in general really.

The Binding of Isaac.
I was never one for twin-stick shooters, but bought it due to seeing friends with an unhealthy amount of hours in it. I figured I couldn't go wrong for $15.
It quickly became a "just one more run" kind of obsession that made me lose a quite a few nights of sleep.

Quake 1 and Quake 3. ive never really been one for first person shooters, especially ones where you go head to head with others. my specific skill set is just NOT geared towards precise aiming, i suck at it so much. however, for some reason the first and third Quake games clicked really hard with me. Quake 1's single player has such a good atmosphere and has probably the most fun and satisfying grenade launcher in any videogame i've ever played. Quake 3, on the other hand, is only multiplayer... but i still really like it! sure, i always get my ass kicked in death match, but respawns are so fast and the stakes are so low that it makes dying more of an expected outcome than a punishment. it lets me have more fun instead of feeling forced to take it seriously. this has lead to me taking on the role of the "Gauntlet Goblin," as someone once called it, where i go for nothing but melee kills by bunnyhopping into peoples faces and holding down left click with the gauntlet. plus, Quake 3 has Defrag, a movement based speedrun mod, which is WAY more my speed. (ha) i like self improvement way more than head to head competition, and defrag scratches that exact itch.

Good read, you should try something like Doom, Duke Nukem and Wolfenstein (maybe ones before the 6th gen) because it also has the same gameplay

But not fully 3D of course, but it's still pretty fun!

thats the thing, ive tried out doom and other games like it but i simply just.. don't mesh with em. i think it might be because doom is very combat centric, specifically when it comes to hitscan weapons, while quake is much more movement centric, with a focus on projectile weapons. at least, that's how i see it, from my limited experience.

that said, i do wanna try out wolf3D, it looks interesting for different reasons, it's so simple that i think it could make for an interesting experience. i watched civvie11's video about it and it's one of my favorites by him.

Definitely second this. There's also wads (Mods basically) like Parallel Doomensions that make Doom more Quake like.

Yeah that's reasonable, Quake hits different (much more intense too)
And have fun man! It is indeed a simple one, probably because it's like a starting point for FPS

If movement is more your thing, try giving Blood a shot. It has such a satisfying movement feel and drips with a foreboding atmosphere in it's own right. There's also Powerslave, if you're into the idea of movement being buffed by Metroidvania style progression.

  • NBA Jam — I'm not into sports games, but there's something undeniably fun about the simplification and exaggeration of the sport in this game. Basketball is much funner when you can blow up the rim by dunking from the 3-point shot line while playing as a velociraptor.
  • Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 — More sports, and realistic at that. But they has some good level design, gameplay, and good taste in punk rock.
  • Final Fantasy Tactics — I'm not huge on TBS, but the familiarity helps make this one of the more enjoyable ones.
  • Fire Emblem Awakening — Again, TBS, and while I appreciate how well-crafted the FE series is, they can sometimes feel boring after a while. FEA had the right balance of elements to get me to be interested in the series again.
  • Tetris DS and Apotris — I don't dislike Tetris; I just feel that most versions of it do nothing new enough to make me want to play them. These two might be the best versions.
  • Phantasy Star Online — I know this sounds ridiculous, but I like the fact that I can play this MMORPG offline. It eliminates the one of the worst part of MMOs: the other players.
  • Lords of Thunder, Apidya, Agony — A lot of shmups are very samey, to the point that they look the same at a glance if they aren't cute-em-ups. These are some rare few non-cute shmups that did something completely unique.
  • Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA 2nd — I'm not really into rhythm games, especially because they often don't have any good so— Popi popi popi po! Popi popi popi po!
  • Project Justice — Tekken-style 3D fighters are not usually my thing. This game fixes the problem by mixing the style with that of typical Capcom 2D fighters.

Nice to see a Quake appreciator. It's a series i have always been obsessed for similar reasons like the immense amount of speed. I also appreciate how creative you can get with all the movement tech and usage of weapons. I tried to go even further with mods like CPMA and i'm also still playing and enjoying Quake Champions although the updates are almost null and the first 3-4 years of the game were a complete mess making the servers kinda empty(life of a Quaker is hard lol).

It's very fitting that the Quake fan chimes in with the username being gore over and over again lol. I'm also a big fan of Doom and Quake. I play through the classic Doom stuff several times a year.

Not exactly the same as the question, but I used to be convinced I hated turn-based strategy games until I played this one on steam called Enemy. Its rough 3D pixel art look drew me in, reminded me of older indie games, and it ended up turning me around on strategy games. It's kinda like xcom in how its combat works, you've got units with each having a time stat that goes down with each action, and leftover time can be used to interrupt enemy actions, but the game's whole deal is it's in a world where each biome is based on a different game genre, so the design gets really abstract and gamey, like how one of your stats you can boost is "throw" which lets you grab literally any object, people included, and throw it mario 2 style, which you can use to smash holes in buildings and potentially collapse the roof of some, causing the rubble physics to deal huge damage to enemies inside. You can even pull off some immersive-sim adjacent shenanigans like this time I wanted to snipe through a hole in a wall, but it was too high, so I put a rock down next to it, then picked up my ranger, stepped onto the rock, then crouched so my ranger I was holding was perfectly lined up. I've tried more strategy games since then, but that one was my gateway drug

DOOM and Fallout 3/New Vegas.
I hated first-person shooters before them, and I also wasn't very good.. That changed when I started to get so much better I stopped using VATS because I felt like I was cheating at that point. 😅

Another thing Fallout did for me was get me interested in  guns, something I spent most of my life hating for the sheer cowardice. Now, I find them fascinating, and I watch videos about them, look them up online for research, and talk about them with friends who share the interest.

I've always been a fan of DOOM since I watched my dad play it as a kid. He was always good at FPSes, and up until I played through Fallout 3, I never was; all that changed when I got heavy into modding the games, and I began finding mods to make the First-Person-Shooter aspect better in the games.

But now I love DOOM for entirely new reasons, and can enjoy it by myself! 😁

DJ max Tecnika Tune on the PS vita:
I wasn't a big fan of musical games but I tried that one because it got great reviews, and at the end I loved it. This song was enough to get me say "wow what a great game let's try more musical games"

Forza Horizon 5, I had tried racing games before (Gran Turismo, Midnight Club, NfS) but aside from Mario Kart I never really got too much out of them, then 2 years ago we got an Xbox Series S, and I saw that fh5's map was set in México and I said, oh well might as well try it.
I like everything, the cars, the races, the different modes, man even just driving aimlessly while seeing recreations of places I've been to for real has been fun
I just love it
