I used to hate FPS genre, thinking of it as the most brain dead thing ever, compared to platformers or character action games.

My disdain towards them was caused, by wasting thousands of hours in online FPS games, and 7th gen cover shooters, which I got sick of them, by the beginning of PS4 era.

That all changed, once I was gifted DOOM 2016. Afterwards, I've played all the retro and indie old school FPS games, wholeheartedly enjoying them.

Deckbuilders, I didn't care much for them until I played Balatro and that lead me down the rabbit hole.

Deck Builders.

Library of Ruina, Touhou Lost Branch of Knowledge, and Paladin's Oath changed that.

Idle games

The paradox didn't compute on me "Okay, so this is a game you ACTUALLY DON'T PLAY, what in Spike's name is this (redacted expletive) nonsense?" i said, then i got into AFK Arena since Jaiden, my waifu next to Wolfychu, was added, and i realized these games can be entertaining in their own way

I didn't care for anything Turn-Based as a kid/teen, as I preferred super-fast paced stuff like Classic FPS, Fighting Games, and Character Action. Now I love Turn Based RPGs and Strategy Games a great deal, and have quite a few of them on my favorite games list.

Used to hate (or at least keeping away from) FPS/TPS, stealth and horror.
Now I'm not really "in love" (for ex. I don't think I'm going to touch a Resident Evil or Silent Hill or things like that), but I've played and enjoyed games from these genre.
"Killzone Mercenary" and "Unit 13", both "MGS" on Vita, "MGS Peace Walker" on PSP (and other nice shooters on PSP), and "Darkest Dungeon 2" on Switch.

I also don't like moe games; I've played "Moero Crystal" because of the mechanic - creating a party like in a pokemon game, in which you have a great choice of characters -, after clearing the main story I realized I got fed up with the fanservice.

similar to OP, I wasn't into FPS (only casually played a few back in the day with friends) but I've slowly came around to a few on 3DO like Shock Wave 2: Beyond the Gate and PO'ed. still not my preferred genre.

Several genres. Sorry, but this’ll be a long one.

Sports games!
I used to think of them all as boring slop, as I was thinking exclusively of the EA yearly releases. Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4 stumbled into my life on a whim, being only around $3 for a GameCube copy back then, and it would go on to basically define my teenage years. As time would pass, I’d become more loose on sports stuff, but still turn my nose up to much of it, until very recently when I tried out NBA 2K1 and Virtua Tennis 2 on Dreamcast. These two games were AMAZING! It made me realize that I liked certain sports more than others and I loved games with a defined style and feel. These were two sports games that clearly had tons of love and passion in them, and I’ve loosened up far more on sports titles since then. Even enjoyed Bowling and Basketball on Atari 2600 for some reason! Though, that was more mindless fun.

And yes, Wii Sports, but that was a Nintendo title so my Nintendrone brain as a kid accepted it with open arms while rejecting everything else. Very stupid in hindsight, as I probably missed out on some great stuff.

Racing games!
I used to, again, have the Nintendrone idea that all racing games that weren’t Mario Kart were boring driving sims. Judging games by their cover, basically (racing games have some of the most boring cover art. “Oh boy! Cars!”). But, then, I got hit with the double whammy of Daytona USA and Ridge Racer, followed soon after by Need for Speed: Most Wanted. Ever since it’s been a genre I beeline towards every time I get a new system. I’ve learned that I love arcade racers, and even arcade/sim hybrids. Full on sims like Gran Turismo I haven’t gotten into, though that’s probably because I get nothing out of car p0rn and I don’t have a steering wheel/pedals. Come to me when I have those perhipherals, and maybe I’ll be singing a different tune. It’s also possible that GT 7 is just… not good, so bleh.

Fighting games!
I used to think Smash Bros. was the only fighter I’d ever really care about (noticing a horrifying pattern?) Dragon Ball FighterZ changed that, as well as several older DBZ games. And the Pipeworks Godzilla games. In truth, it was many games that loosened me up. The aesthetics of fighting games were cool! It was just that they were “so hard” or “I can’t get into them” or whatever else I would tell myself. Then, at Boss Battle Games, I was visiting one day and they had Street Fighter 6 on the screen. I decided “eh, why not?” as I was drawn in by how cool the game looked, how fresh its aesthetic was, and how crisp its graphics were. I played it, found a character I loved to play, and knew I needed to play more. More importantly, I knew that I WANTED to learn how to play better. Ever since, fighting games have become more and more dominant in my life. Another favorite genre that had to grow on me.

With the genres out of the way, I have to say that I wasn’t a big fan of Pokémon Sun and Moon when they dropped. I was like “this is too flashy! The story is boring! I just want to go!” Then a couple years go by, and I become interested again. So, I rebuy a copy of Sun, and dedicate my summer to playing it before Sword and Shield come out. I loved it. It became my second favorite Pokémon generation. I’m glad I gave it a second chance, because I was more in the mood for it the second time around and it became something truly special for me.

I’ve been finding more and more of the 3DO’s following. It’s becoming more and more cool to me by the day!

Way back when, I didn't like moé that much or mahou shojo. (I blame 90s anime trends of making moé with disgustingly huge eyes that took up 90% of the face like some weird human-insect hybrid.) These days, moé is comforting, and mahou shojo is perfectly fine, even nostalgic at times.

puzzle games

Back then , i used to despise western RPGs and Crpgs overall because they were very complex and i preffered more JRPGs . But this changed for me in a 180° degree kind of way .

Now i dont really like JRPGS anymore ( no hate , just no interest for most of them ) and im all in for old Western RPGs and CRPGS . JRPGS are either very straight-forward with limited ways to change the character for its intended class and possibilities and even way too story-focused for my taste ( yeah ... i want some freedom for roleplaying too ) . My taste in Animes are already limited to 80s / 90s style and its depictions of fantasy , so the most JRPGs were way too cutesy for me in its artstyle and approach , while it lost its grounded and immersive aspects thanks to its extremly , godlike , over the top , almost world-destructive magic , power and characters that rather pushes me away instead hypes me up .

Old Western CRPGS has that grounded and very adventurous feel that i seek and we missed alot of underrated games too that were overshadowed by the huge successes of Baldurs Gate 1 and 2 and the whole Final Fantasy series alone .

I guess competitive games in general... Back in the arcade heyday, I used to stay clear of games like street fighter or super sidekicks, even though such games were a visual treat back in the day. Often going for Beat em ups or one player games, like rally-x or elevator action.

Most RPGs outside of Chrono trigger for me, was usually an FPS , Sports and action gamer, now I'm grinding through some PSP era RPGs!

I used to really hate puzzle games. They are still not my favorite, but I can at least play and enjoy some of them now.

You should check out Romancing SaGa Minstrel Song. It's an open world jrpg that takes inspiration from tabletop roleplaying games and western rpgs. It doesn't play like a jrpg at all other than having a turn based battle system. It also doesn't really play like a lot of western rpgs either. It's kind of it's own thing. Party building and character ability customization is super deep and rewarding. The quest system is probably closest to something like Majora's Mask.

There's an event ranking system that increases as you fight battles that progresses time in the game. Different quests become available or unavailable as your event rank increases. There's 8 starting characters with different short intro stories with varying amounts of linearity and then you're just dropped off into a world to adventure around and recruit a party and complete quests and stuff. It's a lot of fun if you like the idea of having your own unique adventure in a world that feels like things are happening around you. It's a hard game but it feels really rewarding progressing and discovering different quests and adventures.

You mean piece matching ones or more logic based puzzles?
Umm, both. Basically anything that required me to think ::badpc
Even tactical RPGs like Final Fantasy Tactics.

Now I started to enjoy some of them, possibly because my mind matured and can think now lol.
I even started to like Tetris!

I think those are wonderful "brain shifters", if you allow me a little neologism here. Say you play racing, FPS and platformers all the time, I feel it leads to a certain kind of brain fatigue. Switching it up with a different pace allows a sort of rest mode.

This is literally the new gaming policy I'm setting up for myself this year. Action games are way more dopaminergic - you literally get a little spike every time you hit or shoot something, and even more so when you die. At this point I need to manage my dopamine carefully or I just get tired mentally and lose interest in things. Turn-based games can be very enjoyable in their own way without spiking your dopamine all the time, so now I systematically alternate between the two. Exercise is good to restore the nervous system too so for any day that I play an action game I have to do at least an hour of exercise.
