Game franchises that have regressed

turning it into a grandiose, nonsensical soap opera about nothing.
I've posted this already in the NiGHTS thread but I'll post it again because it bears repeating: Sonic Team writing is terrible. I don't know why they insist on doing it over and over again. It doesn't improve. Unlike the games, the plots were always a shitshow.

Assassin's Creed
This IP has become unrecognizable. I jumped off the speeding train at Brotherhood, but I still remember how much I liked the first entry and how much of an improvement the sequel was. The development team knew what they were doing; they were going in the right direction for almost everything. What the hell happened?

Making Monster Hunter more accessible makes perfect business sense; Capcom IS a business, let's not forget.
And video games are an art form. It doesn't matter what the media format is: greed destroys art. Waving it off as "it's just business" is exactly the kind of defeatist mentality corpos want from their customer base. Don't think; just buy.

I'll readily admit that I'm selfish and I want to retain the version of MH that attracted me in the first place. I don't want to share my toys if that means I have to watch them deteriorate because the new kids couldn't care less about a niche IP that lacks mass appeal. I don't care if the stuff I like isn't popular; in fact, I've gotten to the point where I prefer that they aren't popular because popularity is what ultimately pushes corporations to bend a beautiful thing out-of-shape so that the lowest common denominator can have yet another thing to mindlessly consume. As if they don't already have enough.

Dragon Age, Final Fantasy, Zelda, Mass Effect....so many AAA titles that I'd have been SO HAPPY to pre-order for full price....now I wait for the sale.

I really hated how Parasite Eve ended up.
I was such a promising title when it came out.
Then SquareEnix went too “experimental” with the title that ruined it.
I and II were made by Squaresoft and they were great, then along came Enix and ruined everything, i will never forgive Square for ruining Square...

Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom felt like a Gmod game with Zelda textures, when i finished them i felt betrayed.

We can always count on Arnold to say the truth.

The thing about appealing to a bigger audience is that you can have two scenarios, Resident Evil 4 or...Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth, both of them which divided the fans to this very day.

That's very true. I think it is unavoidable, largely.

Harvest Moon, truly a modern tragedy.

Also, No more heroes, even If 3 and TSA are pretty good they're not as good as 1, I won't say anything about 2.

The disconnect is that the creators see it for the art it is, corporations will just see a fattened bottom line.

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely am on the camp of classic MH and I don't think modern holds a candle to it, but outside of a catastrophic sales disaster (that would require people's wallets to remain closed), the tendencies won't change, outside of a full market crash.

In regards to AssCreed, there is A LOT that could be said in regards to what went wrong, but the TLDR is that behind the scenes things were going wrong even by the second game. People just managed to either ignore, or not care, about the drastic changes happening because the Ezio trilogy was still really good.
They had a very clear vision in mind with the first game, and even though they had to compromise on that vision in 2, you can still tell they were trying to make it work. This is pretty much how things went until 3 when they pretty much just ended the original storyline, and after that, the less is said about it the better.
I don't even want to talk bad about the developers who had to work on these games because I can tell that so many of these people are talented and truly want to make it work, but there is only so much you can do when you have studio interference or other drama behind the scenes. We as players unfortunately get kept in the dark about this stuff until someone decides to speak up and more often than not we can just feel bad for the workers and creatives on these things (plus we had the reveal that Ubisoft was ran by hardcore misogynists and sex fiends which also hurt the franchise, the creatives and the workers, so it was really just awful all around for everybody)

That's a fair sentiment. In these situations, it's rarely the developers that are the source of the problem anyway.

Is it possible that the series was still young enough that players didn't want to rag on the changes too much? What I appreciated the most about 2 was the QoL changes; not so much the changes made to combat. My favorite aspect of the first game was the disincentivization of direct combat with guards. The developers really wanted the player to feel like stealth was the best option and I loved that. When AC2 rolled around, I noticed that getting spotted was no longer the threat it used to be but I hesitated to complain because, as I stated before, it seemed like the developers were still going in the right direction.

I'm really tired of this seemingly being the norm at game development companies. Heard similar shit regarding Bethesda.

Honestly I don't get the hate for 2, in ways its more fun than the first one and definitely more fun than TSA. And yes the story is worse, but its not like 3 has a good story either. The first one is still my favorite though.

Chibi-Robo!: the first game is one of my favorite games of all time, but unfortunately its sequels are abysmal and lack many of the aspects that made me fall in love with the first game, with the exception of Park Patrol which is a good game but not as good as the first, but the third game Chibi-Robo! Photo Finder sucks and Chibi-robo! Zip Lash is an incredibly mediocre 2D platformer that killed its developer (Skip Ltd.)

Just to let everyone know that I've never played Chibi-Robo!: Clean Sweep (a game that was only released in Japan) but I plan to play it one day, since I've heard that it's also a good game.

I was about to ask about this one lmao.
I hear its closer to the first game in terms of content so hopefully when you get around to it you enjoy it (and then tell us, to motivate me to finally play it as well)

After finishing Ys X Nordics last year... I kinda start to believe that Falcom doesn't care that much about Ys (they get more money from the Kiseki series) and while Montrum Nox had many flaws compared to the great Lacrimosa of Dana it had more verticality and was also faster.

I really hope that after they're done with Ys X Proud Nordics they'll tackle the remake of Ys V and we'll finally go full circle because I got little to no hopes for XI.

I think gaming as a whole have regressed: in order to appeal to everyone they dropped what made many franchises special.

Yes I could (and WILL) beat the dead horse that is Halo and its fall, but also Gears of War that now is a lot of more tame; Gran Turismo that is now an always online GaaS or Monster Hunter with Wilds that is not bad, but definitely more streamlined that the OG MH.

Although the word regressed may not be the correct one because regression means "returning to a previous/original state".

If gaming regressed to the PS2 era I would actually be happy.

Harvest Moon, truly a modern tragedy.

I'm a bit curious which Harvest Moon you mean, you mean Harvest Moon title published by Natsume that lost the publishing rights to Bokujō Monogatari and thus began make games in house to make money off the title name they owned to tick the population into buying their games while Bokujō Monogatari continues on as Story of Seasons? Or is Bokujō Monogatari the one that's a tragedy?

I consider both tragedies but Bokujō Monogatari at least makes ones with decent mechanics and art styles, I miss the realism of AWL when your animals died or the fact your cows had to have a calf to have milk but I guess the cozy scene needs to be easy to relax with.

I came here to read about Final Fantasy and was not disappointed.

the might & magic franchise. everything put out after the ubisoft buyout is at best mediocre but for the most part just plain bad & boring. no hard feelings to people who grew up with the post-ubisoft games, i think most of them did pretty good on consoles. just sucks that ubisoft bought a cool rpg/strategy series, axed the developers who made it what it was, and havent used the IP for more than generic action fantasy titles since.

All games should be arcade and colorful like Dreamcast games. Not like boring interlaced movie like games of the PS2 with bajillion cutscenes and loading times.
I like the PS2 era but goddamn there was a lot of brown/gray filters in that era. Even RE1 Remake which is awesome suffers from that.

And if that wasn't bad enough, next gen was the PS3 era with those awful sepia tones everywhere. Realism and poor optimization are the two things I despise most in gaming.

I'm having a hard time thinking of a franchise that has not regressed in some capacity tbh.
