Knights in the Knightmare!!

SMT strange journey is my personal favorite RPG for the OG ds. SMT is also a monster collection series so if they like pokemon but want something with a little more teeth this isn’t a bad place to start

Off the top of my head, you've got DQ IV, V, VI and XI on the DS, FF IV, Radiant Historia, Chrono Trigger, SMT Strange Journey, 7th Dragon, the Etrian games and Infinite Space, I've played all of these, didn't finish some of them.

Thanks! This one looks so good :)
Two incredibly underrated Nintendo DS RPGs: View attachment 61318View attachment 61319
Oh yes contact! These are going straight on there
Beat me to it

Maybe try the Medabots games. It combines the collecting aspect of Pokemon with the robot customization.

Explain about the "nothing too anime" first, because otherwise 95% of the entire GBA and DS library are pretty much outta the question as they're very much anime.
Nothing too anime as in sexual anime girls I think lol

You're truly the silliest of them all ::bigboss

Golden Sun 1 and 2 on GBA (you can use the savegame of the 1st game in the 2nd Golden Sun).

Never finished any RPG on NDS, only the castlevanias: Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin and Order of Ecclesia.

Tomato Adventure for the Game Boy Advance is pretty underrated in my opinion, it was developed by AlphaDream and is basically a precursor to the Mario & Luigi series (most of Tomato Adventure's mechanics are akin to those of the Mario & Luigi series and, in general, were expanded upon in Superstar Saga). The game was also directed by Yoshihiko Maekawa, Chihiro Fujioka and Jin Ito (Maekawa and Fujioka also directed Super Mario RPG and Maekawa was the director of Superstar Saga). Hiroyuki Kubota, who wrote the stories for Superstar Saga, Partners in Time, Bowser's Inside Story and Dream Team, also wrote the story for this game, the game was never released outside of Japan, but there is a fan translation in English.

Mega Man Battle Network series for the GBA and Mega Man Star Force series for the NDS.
I would like to amend this: Battle Network 2, 3 Blue, 5 Double Team DS, and either version of 6. With Star Force, any versions of 1 and 3 work. BN1 and 4 are bad, as is SF2.

As for my own recs, since I'm not sure what he means by "too anime" so...Final Fantasy V, VI, and Tactics Advance, Yggdra Union, Monster Ranvher Advance 2, and the Fire Emblem games for GBA. FF4 GBA is optional, because GBA and DS are both good. For DS, Dragon Quest V and IX, The World Ends With You, Etrian Odyssey III, and Bowser's Inside Story.

I would recommend against The Dark Spire (I love the game, but it's very much meant for people who like '80s dungeon crawlers) and Avalon Code (kids deserve better).

If I had to suffer playing through them, so will everybody else! /j

Real talk, I enjoyed BN1 and 4 when I replayed them via the Legs Collection. It was fun, going through them for the first time in twenty years. Ultimately, I do even like BN4. But they are not good by any stretch of the imagination. 2 and 6 are the best the series has to offer.

Cima the enemy a cross between an action rpg and lemmings(you need to help traverse a group of "survivors" an hostile environment).
Shining soul 2, A diablo clone with lots of customization.
Rebelstar tactical command, A lighter less complex X-com.

The theme that plays as I list a lot of different games:

Monster Collecting RPGs:

-Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey
-Shin Megami Tensei IV
-Soul Hackers
-Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux
(only assuming if your twin is the age range of M rated games cause idk, SMT and it's spinoffs tend to be rated M)

-Yo Kai Watch's entire run was on the 3DS and it was a legitimate competitor to Pokemon at one point
-Fossil Fighters 1-3, though Frontier isn't very well liked I hear

Strategy RPGs:

-Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon
-Fire Emblem: Echoes
-Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem
-Fire Emblem: Awakening
(don't let the Smash players influence their opinions on the franchise because they are genuinely pretty interesting to play with a really wide range of characters, stories, options, etc.)

-Stella Glow
-Knights in the Nightmare
-Pokemon Conquest (this is literally Pokemon Fire Emblem, so try it)
-Drone Tactics
-Final Fantasy Tactics A2
-Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume
-Devil Survivor Overclocked and Record Breaker (these are SMT spinoffs, BUT are rated T)
-Advance Wars Dual Strike and Days of Ruin
(add the original and 2 to the list if GBA is possible)

Simulation games:

-Rune Factory 1-5 are all playable on DS/3DS. They're a mix of farming sim and rpg
-Atelier is the same but it isn't so lucky, with it only having Atelier Annie for DS and two other games that went completely unlocalized
-Nora to Toki no Koubou (fan translated, the forgotten Atlus competitor to Atelier)

None of the stated:

-7th Dragon
-7th Dragon 2020 III (the previous 2 are PSP exclusive and unlocalised, but you don't need them to play this)
-Etrian Odyssey 1-5 and Nexus for the last to try. The Untold games are optional, but Untold 1 spoils a pretty big plot twist in the original game pretty early in
-The Dark Spire
(these up here are all games that rely on you creating your own builds, skills, and classes, sorta like D & D. They don't have massive sprawling plots or anything, but this level of freedom in an RPG is very rare)

-Custom Robo Arena
(this is sorta like the category above, but its more so the ability to customise your robot and change the play style, movement, and other stuff)

-Fantasy Life
(more limited than the categories above, still has some freedom)

-The World Ends With You
(TWEWY is built DIFFERENT. It's so unique of a game that the best way to play it is on actual hardware.)

-Tales of Innocence
-Tales of the Abyss
(Tales is a franchise of action RPGs mostly for the consoles. There are very few for DS/3DS except the localisation of Abyss on 3DS, Hearts (unlocalised), Tempest (don't play Tales of the Tempest, it's the worst in the franchise), and Tales of Innocence)

-Okamiden
(forgotten sequel to the action RPG that's getting another sequel sometime this or next year, Okami. I don't THINK it requires any knowledge of the original but I've never played it nor have I finished the original)

-Phantasy Star Zero

-Mega Man Star Force trilogy
(If you can play GBA games, play all 6 Battle Network games too, a list of GBA games specifically will take me a while to do if needed)

-Metal Max 2: Reloaded and Metal Max 3

-Lunar Knights
(spinoff of Boktai which once again, GBA exclusives)

-Luminous Arc 1-3, 3 has to be fan translated

-Golden Sun in general if GBA is possible, as 2/3 of the games are locked to it

-You can play Dragon Quest 4 all the way to 9 on DS/3DS, how neat

-Dinosaur King

-Deep Labyrinth

-Chrono Trigger DS (considered the best way to play it)

-All GBA/DS Castlevania games are considered half Action RPG

-both Blue Dragon games

-Avalon Code

-Radiant Historia (I don't know if the DS or 3DS version is better, so both)

-Bravely Default and Bravely Second

-The Alliance Alive

-The Legend of Legacy

-Ever Oasis

-Miitopia

I feel like I'm reaching the word limit, lemme create a new comment

I don't care about the categorisation anymore

-Beyond the Labyrinth
-Final Fantasy Explorers
-999/Zero Time Dilemma/Virtue's Last Reward (same franchise)
-every Kingdom Hearts for DS or 3DS, and GBA if possible
-Solatarobo
-Project X Zone
-all Mario & Luigi games, yes all, play Paper Jam too
-RPGMaker FES (would you believe me if I told you RPGMaker has an exclusive 3DS version?)
-Puyo Puyo Chronicle (I hear some people can play it even though it's untranslated and not localized but I wouldn't know)
-Dragon Quest Monsters games (It's the monster collecting aspect of Dragon Quest 5 and 6 but an entire game I hear)
-From the Abyss
-Infinite Space
-Disgaea DS
-A Witch's Tale
-Final Fantasy 3
-Final Fantasy 4
-Final Fantasy 12: Revenant Wings
-Final Fantasy: 4 Heroes of Light
-the many Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles games on DS if you're both feeling in a multiplayer mood
