FREE Games

Just getting DOOM and using GZDOOM or Zandronum as a source port unlocks a lot of freeware options. That video covered like 2 Total Conversions but there are more. There's Pirate DOOM (the sequel was recently made), Sonic Robo Blast 2, Hocus Pocus, and DOOM the Golden Souls (DOOM but with a Mario 64 theme and sonic music).

For Zandronum DOOM there's SRB2K, DOOMware (think of Warrior Ware but with DOOM), Mega Man 8-bit Death Match (the single player campaign is one of the best Mega Man fan games ever created).

I put in links to videos for the ones I think need explaining as to what they are. Hocus Pocus I think is the best DOOM total conversion I've ever played

You have a large game backlog because you have five thousand games on steam.

I have a large game backlog because I have access to google and retroarch

We are not the same

Older games that are originally abandonware should remain abandonware and free. That seems to be hijacked and cute hoors who had nothing to do with the development are profitting off of other people's creations.

I have no problem with making affordable, modern rereleases of older titles. An affordable, readily available release of an older title will make it easier for newer people to discover it. Like it or not the average person has no desire to pirate anything, and has no idea what emulation, legal or otherwise is. If studios want to prevent piracy, then make their titles affordable and available.

This being said, profits should go to the original creatives yes.

Go back only ten, maybe 15 years ago and these games were on abandonware sites for free. There was no issue of piracy because the games were abandoned. Free to the public domain.

Here in the US, Abandonware games are legally not public domain. Downloading a game from an abandonware site was, in a legal sense, piracy. The company that owns the IP never officially released it, and not enough time has passed to let it fall into public domain on their own. The owners of the IP are free to issue DMCAs to the websites that host abandonware if they wish.
Now, the chances of them doing so are slim, as if the company isn't re-releasing these games and trying to make a profit off them, then why the hell do they care if someone pirates their games from 20+ years ago? But this is likely why more recent years have had them rerelease more older games. They are aware the market exists and want to capture that market.

I am aware of how things were like 10-15 years ago, but not everyone is like us. Most people have no interest in piracy or even emulation in general. If you want these games to survive and continue to be archived and played in the future, then you should be glad they are getting official rereleases.

Now the PRICE of those official rereleases is definitely something that should be up for debate sometimes lmao

While I agree with a lot of what you've said, there's definitely some really concerning things going on in regards to attacks on preservation and archival organizations by corporations with no vested motive to provide any way of accessing these things themselves.

The laws aren't necessarily in the best interest of the public in this case, and the aggressive nature with which resources like Internet Archive are being attacked worries me.

oh yeah I think a lot of work needs to be done in this regard.
