For me, it would be Mega Man 6 in the classic style.

I think it has such a good blend of everything. Most weapons are good, it has nice music, interesting Robot Master designs, has very good difficulty balance and has, IMO, the coolest get weapon screen in classic.

Still, it seems that most people see it as a weak entry? I don't know if it is truly so, but that's the impression I get.

So, do you guys have similar stories to share? any franchise is fine, too, let's hear it!

That is a *very specific* prompt!

....I mean I love KOF 96, but 94 is the worst, no shooters for the old SNK fighter controls.

...FF8 mayyybe, but I think that's XIII that's the least liked, or the first iteration of XIV...

I dunno! I think I'd have to make some shit up, like I'm the only person that sees the value in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night!

Huge, huge opportunity for Fallout: 76 megafans though.

I love Megaman X2. No one dislikes it, but out of the popular X games, it seems largely ignored.

Megaman 1, 5 and 6 are near and dear to me so it’s a shame they’re sometimes diseregarded. I’m very happy to meet a fellow fan of 6, you seem to love it. 😊

I think all 3D numbered gta games fall under this. 3, 4 and 5 all have their critics and I love all three to death. I’m a firm believer chaos is good, so gta iii is awesome for that. Gta iv has a masterpiece of a story and gta v is great arcade fun and I love Ned Luke.

It’s not my favorite, but I love sonic 1! I beat it in “no-save” many times!

I have other games I wanna mention but their “unpopularity” is tricky to quantify. NES castlevania is unpopular with Metroidvania fans but it’s REALLY popular with classicvania fans.

A similar thing can be said about persona 5, it’s obviously popular in general, but I’ve spoken to so many smt fans that hate it and I can’t blame them. I do find the characters annoying and the plot really shallow. Gameplay is fun though.

Dragon quest 1 is a neat game.
Zelda nes is fun.

Wow, X2 is my favorite among the classic trilogy of X games, I find hard to believe people ignore it. X1 is awesome for being the first and X3 is a disaster unless you patch it with Zero Project (with the patch I think it nears X2 in quality).

I guess GTA thrives in chaos, but it's not my kind of game, haha. My brand of vehicular chaos would be something akin to Burnout or Vigilante 8.
-
SOTN really changed the game for CV. It created a true schism in the fanbase I feel, and either style requires a very different set of skills and minset. Rondo of Blood is the perfect transitional title, and IMO, the most well realized classic CV, with CV3 a close second.
-
Oh, Persona... well that's a can of worms I don't open LOL. I tried several, but none really interest me. Give me mainline SMT anyday instead.
-
DQ1 is basic, but there's something cozy about it. My favorite way to play is with a total conversion patch called Dragoon X Omega, as the futuristic theme is more my jam, but it keeps the mechanics alone.
-
I have a hard time liking most Zelda games to be honest.

I quite like Doom 3, they made a extremely nerve wracking, immersive horror FPS. The flashlight mechanic was great to me, sadly BFG removed it.
I applaud them for trying something different with Doom 3, but my lizard brain just wants to blast stuff with the shotgun the usual way (read: I don't like horror overtones).

Awesome read 😊

Happy there’s a fellow x2 fan 😃, oh I guess there’s a decently sizeble community for it. I should meet them haha. X2 hit all the right spots for me. Can’t find anything to fault about it. Base game is easy, but 100% is satisfyingly hard. It’s surprisingly different from 1 where difficulty was even across the board.

Super Castlevania Iv is awesome too! But the ones you mentioned are great too.

Understandable, persona is just… one of those games hahahaha.

Thanks for telling me about the dragon quest mod! I’ll look it up!

Berserk is a story about friendship and magic, actually ;)

I really had to think on this one!
All I could think of was a generally disliked expansion to the generally least liked entry in a franchise.

I genuinely enjoyed Doom 3: BFG edition's The Lost Mission expansion and I'm super confused as to why people dislike it so much.

In my mind Doom 3 at its base level had decent shooting, but played way too slowly and had way too awful a shotgun to work as an FPS, so The Lost Mission turned the game into a nice and brainless shootbang game and replaced the shitty shotgun.

It's nothing spectacular, but I honestly thought it was the most enjoyable part of the game!

Maybe the expansion tried to veer the game closer to classic Doom and those that liked the tonal change in the base game rebuffed the expansion for that reason.

And then the parts of the Doom audience it tried to appeal to likely didn't even play it because they already dismissed it on the basis of it being an expansion to Doom 3, which they disliked because it wasn't like The Lost Mission.
Now that's a rare issue to have with your product!
