The PS1 library is BIG. Perhaps too big sometimes. What are some of the games from early into the system’s life (1994 - 1996) that you would consider to be pretty fun but totally forgotten.

For me, it’s a toss up between both Jumping Flash and The Raiden Project, but I also have learned about Zero Divide today, always thought it was some boring and crappy game, but I just learned it’s a fighting game about robot dinosaurs, so that’s on my list of things to play.

Skeleton Warriors
The Adventures of Lomax
D
MediEvil
Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee

Brave Fencer Musashi - a good action-RPG game of PS1 that didnt get the sequel it deserved on PS2.

MediEvil is a forgotten game?

It had a sequel, 2 remakes, Daniel was in that PS Smash Bros clone and everything

I'd argue that Blaster Master Blasting Again is actually forgotten

Kick-ass vehicular combat game with kick-ass music released in 1995:

While not an early PSX game I feel this is overlooked.

Zero Divide is a great early 3D fighter. Emulates Virtua Fighter combat but with robots and a cyber aesthetic. Banging soundtrack too.

Disruptor is another great early release. It's a PlayStation exclusive FPS and Insomniac's first ever video game, holds up incredibly well IMO.

Its interesting to see what people consider forgotten these days. Because it solely depends on which bubble you are living in. So any discourse about forgotten games online is kinda pointless imo. I still like watching those videos titled "PS1 hidden gems" and such, because they remind me that personal perspective is very important in pretty much everything. Also can anything be trully forgotten if there is always someone who still remembers it? That's the question.

it was a launch title on the saturn - like an actual LAUNCH title, in 1994 in japan - and then it was also a launch title for the playstation, being the only game to have that for both platforms.

...it's not a good game, but it's funny in a rage induced way

Fair. I say Jumping Flash, not because it’s “forgotten” (it’s literally on PS5), but because I don’t hear it TALKED about. It gets mentioned, but only in a “this is a 3D platformer early in the system’s life” kind of way. Not in a “let’s talk about this title on its own and what makes it so cool” kind of way.

The Raiden Project is actually in a different category, and this might be more bubble related, but I more often hear it mentioned as a Saturn and, of all things, a Jaguar game rather than a PS1 title.

Oh, I thought of another one: ESPN Extreme Sports. Sounds trashy, right? Well, in actuality, it’s a Road Rash style game where you’re racing downhill and trying to kick and punch people to disrupt them and get first place. You can also go through hoops on the way down for extra score. The game uses digitized sprites for characters and has a 3D game world, and it actually looks pretty clean.

I’ve actually wanted to try and own it. It’s aesthetically very calming and it reminds me of a tilting ball maze that my grandfather had. He passed away recenrly, and this game makes me think of him.

I also believe you 100% if it’s rage inducing. That wooden, metal-ball maze was definitely hard to navigate when I was a kid lmao

"Philosoma" it was hyped at first for being revolutionary for the multiple viewpoints and shifting gameplay. On the surface it is just an average shooter (pardon me it's a Shumup these days compared to before FPS co-opted the term) which probably explains why it's not well known today, but the story presentation at the time was impressive, as was the ending that brought about the sequel we never got in the US that was in a completely different Genre, "Phase Paradox" on the PS2, a survival horror game. Mostly containing English voiced dialog, but a lot of in game/menu text is untranslated.

I really hope someday someone translates it so I can finally see the end of the story. But I imagine there are a ton of titles that from that era that are forgotten and will never get that far unless someone really fell in love with it.

Interesting! Shmups aren’t usually known for their story presentation (unless you’re Tohou, at which point the lore is so infamous that a chunk of the fandom has never played a shooter :p), so it’s interesting to hear about one which tries that. If it’s some cool early FMV stuff ON TOP OF BEING A COOL SHOOTER, then it’s a game I’d like to try! I find the early PS1 era super fascinating, especially with the greater mix of 3D and 2D games.
