Inclusive of blobbers. Why are they so awesome? I'm playing Might and Magic 6 right now and all I want to do is play it. To me they're like an evolution of classic FPS games. Anybody have any favorites, or is this genre still alive in the modern era in some form of which we should be aware?

They are still alive to do this day somewhat, with games like Kingdom Come Deliverance and The Elder Scrolls series but they're a lot different from Might and Magic so it might not be exactly what you're expecting from a modern take on First Person CRPG's.

Does Elder Scrolls: Skyrim count ? To be honest, I didn't like RPG's, I never understood their appeal, until I played Skyrim. I got completely Hooked with multiple Side-Quests, breathtaking Visuals, Awesome Weapons, Great enough DLCs, Awesome Ending, Awesome Magic stuff. After that I finally understood what RPGs really meant. My personal Favorite became Skyrim, Dragon Age Inquisition, Mass Effect, Baldur's Gate 1,2 (Haven't played 3 yet). And then began playing the older RPGs of the time, Trail of Mana, Final Fantasy, Mario RPG, you name it. Then came Dark Souls, Sekiro, Metal Gear.

I absolutely love the 3D M&M games, the epitome of the genre to me (I even wrote some articles on a 6 and 7 here on the site). Absolutely awesome RPGs on top of the whole FPS blobber thing, actually some of my favourite games of all time.

There's is the Kingdom Come games, but they're not quite the same. It's mostly a dormant genre now, as far as I know at least. There was the remake of the first Wizardry that came out not too long ago, but that was literally just a UI skin running on the old code.

I have yet to play through the M&M RPGs, but the few that I played of 6 was really charming. I am not sure if it counts, but Dark Messiah of Might and Magic was very memorable, even if a bit dumb and generic at times. But anyone with arachnophobia should stay away.

Thanks for the warning LOL. I wouldn't consider myself an arachonophobe, but I'm healthly suspicious of anything with more than 4 limbs, let's say.

Fight Knight is a fun take on the genre.

Inferno - Beyond the 7th Circle, and Ludus Mortis, are pretty good if you are into horror.

You might like Lunacid, if you are into King's Field.

I never got super into first person crpgs but I do enjoy the Etrian Odyssey games which take a lot from old school first person dungeon crawlers. I find I end up getting confused and disoriented a lot of the time with the older first person RPGs. I'm never sure exactly where I am or where I'm going.

Yeah confusion is my general feeling too, when it comes to these.

Fromsoftware's King's Field is Elden Ring's grandfather.

The old ones, usually expected you to draw a map as you went.
Yeah it's part of the gameplay. Kind of fun IMO.

But most of them got automappers already. Even Eye of the Beholder SegaCD got maps to find in the levels, and nowadays you could use "The All Seeing Eye" freeware to play along without spoilers.

watch ssethtzeentach's video on MM6 and then play it, he'll get you off to a great start

Yup it's Eye of the Beholder SegaCD. Another game I need 30 years to beat XD.

In more recent games I've played Operencia and A Mage's Tale in VR. Two really cool indy games.

Is this "All Seeing Eye" a sort of companion program that does the mapping?

Yup it works with the ScummVM DOS version of the game IIRC. https://www.ase.zorbus.net/

In the SegaCD version you map the level with pen and paper, but in each level you can find a map item revealing what's not yet discovered.

That's really cool, thanks for telling me.
Yeah those games still got fan mods after all those years it's really cool. The game box also contained maps, if you're interested in old games like those you should check those PDFs on internet archive. Half the story is in a booklet, just like some mixed pen and paper RPG / cRPG. Low intensity gameplay, not for everybody, but I really like it.

I think more sedate games (I mean that in a very positive sense) are good to balance out the mind after playing something intense and fast for a long period.
