The online discourse is really a small percentage of the gaming customer base. Plenty of gamers just play whatever looks cool to them and don't care to spend time talking about it online. Also it is a self selection issue as the most passionate advocates are the ones with the motivation to post the online forums. The lack of sales of the PS5 is really harming Square Enix, but it also could be said that none of the exclusives have done a good enough job of convincing the audience to upgrade to the PS5. A chicken or egg scenario in my opinion. The only thing that annoys me about the remake/sequel/timeline fuckery is that they were playing coy about it in the marketing. But, realistically that would only bother players who are really attached to the story of the original game. The bigger issue with the series has been the dumb idea of splitting the content of one game into three 60 hr ones. It forces them to fill the game with filler, minigames and nonsense. There are some older folks who enjoy the remake project, but the vast majority I've interacted with online don't seem to have much connection to the series other than maybe playing FF7.
