I really like its aesthetic the art style I think is really good, the same artist did a whole bunch of work on Digimon, but really the thing that sells it to me is the gameplay mechanics, where it's a very slow paced somewhat methodical kind of battle system with a big emphasis on unit management. [ATTACH type="full" size="1440x480"]98228[/ATTACH] Theres a big focus on creating specialized teams of units to move around and take out high value targets. a whole bunch of work doing the Fusion system to get the right abilities that you want on each guy that kind of thing. Like strange journey and SMT4 really suffer from this in my eyes. The order route is pretty much just God destroying all free will forever and chaos route is just demons killing all human beings forever. devil survivor gets around this by keeping the alignments focused on human party members more than like, the actual God and Satan. "All demons and magic go away forever" is rarely an interesting way to end a story about how demons and magic effect people [ATTACH type="full" size="1440x480"]98236[/ATTACH] SMT5, a game i'm not exctly fond of, does something I like though. the neutral ending has an Even Neutraller ending you have to fight an extra boss to get to, but I took the law ending in that game and it was okay I guess. better than the chaos ending at least which is basically just "everything is fucked forever". TBH Abdiel and Tsukiyomi were more compelling alignment reps than the actual human characters. But overall the alignment endings, to me at least, are far more interesting than the neutral one overall because I like the idea that how things turn out is a bit tragic. the conflict is what makes it [ATTACH type="full" size="1440x480"]98237[/ATTACH] Somewhat related to which, I can't help but feel like the plot of Rev is just, so,..... insipid, in a way that BR and CQ aren't. Like don't get me wrong BR is really boring and has no forward momentum and CQ is maybe the most arbitrary thing ever written but rev is a complete nothing burger [automerge]1754675418[/automerge] [ATTACH type="full" size="1440x480"]98239[/ATTACH] We started in a neat place: corrin is kind of arbitrarily an outlaw and wanderer with a small crew. that's cool, it gives us a very different start from where we were before- the openings of the 2 main routes give us a dedicated team we're on, some friends in high places, and while CQ puts us on more of a back foot with a crew of allies who show up on the down low, BR gives us a whole backing of an army starting out. The gameplay supports the tone... but like, this doesn't make for compelling gameplay when your starting team is small and grows slowly, with a bunch of units backloaded as you get all the Royals and their individual goons [ATTACH type="full" size="1440x480"]98240[/ATTACH] The fact that your earlygame team is just Birthright + Gunter makes it far less interesting too. The nohrian party members all show up so late and are all so dogshit. they all have precisely the same stats basically or less on the level timescale, and also theyre all so underleveled? I swear to god its like nintendo wanted them to rush this entire route out as shitty DLC. i wouldn't at all be suprised if making 3 whole campaigns was too much time and effort for them to make on a 3ds budget and they really just couldn't refine any of the crappy rev maps or the nonexistant plot [ATTACH type="full" size="1440x480"]98242[/ATTACH] It really does feel like Rev is just kind of the lowest common denominator """Golden Route"""" where there's zero meaningful conflict at all so its by definition the ending that makes the most people happy. If your definition of a good ending is one where every party member in the entire game is bouncing on corrins dick for how cool and awesome and virtuous he is youre ngmi. I think that fates' overall tone is less Hard Worldbuilding and Countries and shit and a lot more like, fairytale fantasy in nature. its very Storylike in how it conducts itself, with big, expressive characters who drop more complicated backstories for the sake of simplicity. This isn't a bad thing, but it ends up making you ask: what, precisely is fates About? [ATTACH type="full" size="1440x480"]98246[/ATTACH] I think the simplest idea is conflict between family.
