You know what I mean: those bosses that took dozens of tries or more, the one's that made you really utilize what the game gave you. Sometimes the only reward was the title of beating the beast. (Looking at you FF8, my love)

But yeah, who's your favorite secret bosses? Mine are something along the lines of:

- Omega Weapon from FF8 (Not really hard to beat, but the first time ever it was not a treat)
- Yiazmat from FF12 (Time sinker boss, had to choice but to Google the solution here, happy when it was finally done..)
- The Phantom/Sephiroth from KH1 (I loved all the secret bosses in the KH saga)
- Shoutout to Adamantoise in FF15 just cause he's the biggest turtle you know.

The Demi Fiend on Digital Devil Saga.
You have to be on New game plus and Fighting him is basically watching a whole 1 hour (even more) movie because he has 18.000 hp. But when he has the half of that he summons Pixie and buffs himself to have 27.000 hp. The good thing is that only happens once in the battle. But at the end he is still a superboss.

Also another great secret boss is the Rathalos on MGS Peace Walker

Would it be safe to assume that I could find similar secret bosses in SMT: Nocturne HD? I played a portion of it after buying it. I'm pretty good with Persona games but Nocturne is definitely harder as I assume most SMT games might be.

Omega in Mega Man ZX is a cool boss fight.
Man.. I was never really good at Mega Man back in the early days. I played a lot of Mega Man 8 on PS1 but I was just trash, lol. Should go back and see if these developmental years have made me better (or more tolerant).

Digital Devil Saga is easy. It was basically made to attract people to the franchise and if you know what are you doing you're ready to go. And answering your question. In nocturne there's an extra dungeon that is opcional but there's are a lot of new bosses like the Archangel Metatron and if you complete it You can get one of the best endings in gaming. Also in Nocturne try to learn the weakness of the enemies if you learn how to abuse that system you can get very far in the game 😉

Monster Hunter have the most craziest elder dragons I've fought but the one that really test me is definitely Fatalis (White and Black)

Those guys just can't give me a break, even in the new gen (Iceborne), it felt rewarding though

Drizzt in Baldur's Gate. Dude is extremely overleveled and after you meet him he will go away forever so you only get one chance. And even better, if you do kill him, he will return in the second game with a whole party to take revenge on you. One of the most memorable battles of the game.

Other than that, Culex in SMRPG and Ozma in FF9 come to mind.

I CANNOT say the same for Digital Devil Story 2 Megami Tensei which is the only game I played and finished in the series, adored it, and it is one Bastard Game: When I got to God I REALLY felt I like I had to make it through jell and back to get there

Id say...
Rodin from the Batyonetta games will completly disintigrate you and you'll need to partially relarn the game to get through one health bar, and it follows the convention of "The Mercant is the strongest entitity in the game"

He takes 999999999 coins to unlock, has a ludicrous amount of hp, is immune to your slowing down time, you cannot use items and has a grab that will reduce you to 1 hp or kill you if you're already on 1 which you will be in some 4-5 hits with maxed out health
Fighting him also teaches you about who this mysterious character actually is and beating him unlocks you a unique weapon that morphs into angel arms

Also...NIGHT TERROR from SoulCalibur 3

Merely getting to him requires you taking a secret path when playing the story mode thats different for every character

Then you must also beat another secret oppent thats extra difficult before getting to him, and youn must never lose once

Night Terror breks all the rules, he cannot be thrown off the ring as he will just fly back up, he has ludicruous rage, unlimited power, incredible speed, invincibility frames, he can fly and shoot giant ass lasers forever, stun you for eternity and he looks fuckin amazing

Theres an entire unlockable minigame thats just fighting him because the developers KNEW what theyve just created, he has a unique bio that will send shivers down your spine as he is the apocalypse of this world. You can use cheat devices to play as him and man...he really feels like you're playing as a God
Theres a special superboss you only fight against in challenge modes called colossus, ah..well, colossal statue that can also one shot you and kick you into saturn and all that; night terror makes quick work of it

Did I mention you can still move around as you fly firing down infinite lasers??
And just listen to that theme

Picked up Bayonetta for dirt cheap on Steam several months back, good to see what I'm sure will amount to a great challenge someday.

Edited to add another secret boss :p

The quickest way to farm halos for him is equipping gaze of despair and defeat temperantia over and over with lighting durga

Its best you unlock all the strongest weapons first (which you'll have to look up)
Let's just say that he's in a different league than even the game's equivalent to dante must die

Asura from Vagrant Story, not because it's a difficult fight, but it means you've cleared that awful Iron Maiden dungeon!

My gaming backlog is way too big, I hope I make it to this some day.
It's got the most cinematic sensibility of anything on the PSX (or at least tied with Metal Gear Solid but without Kojima's on the nose direct references), and the combat/equipment system is still unique, if a bit held back by the system limitations. Pretty much my favorite game of all time, hope you like it if you ever get around to it.

I still need to play Megami Tensei 2. At some point everyone in their lives have to fight the Minotaur. Also I took like 2 hours to kill Rodin in 360 and I think they did him more harder in bayonetta 2 it's insane 🤣

Also another hard as hell secret boss! This time is Satan in Digital Devil Saga 2. First It can only be fought on hard difficulty nearly at the end of the game. Which means that you had to have a save of DDS 1 (it gives you a save bonus reward that unlocks hard difficulty instantly) or complete digital Devil Saga 2 and start a new save on hard. Well the dude is level 99, has a lot of hp (the mayor quantity of the entire game!), when he takes enough damage he change his attack pattern and also he has an attack that instantly kills your party member with the lowest magic stat. So yeah if I were you dear reader I would play Digital Devil Saga 1 and then transfer the save for the bonuses.

mario RPGs secret boss is basically a final fantasy boss, with final fantasy music before the fight, during the fight, and after the fight. he fights with the 4 crystals like most FF games have.
on the SNES version he mentions how he's stuck in 2d graphics,
in the remake on switch he mentions how he's now 3D and more powerful (he is but not enough)
mario rpg is super duper easy you can be level 20 and beat the secret boss and all (switch version) new bosses, the max level is 30 and there's zero reason to be that high. switch version is easier most of the time aside from the new boss fights, but it was easy on SNES all the same.
Post automatically merged:

i don't think it's a secret/hidden boss but it's optional all the same:
in bravely default 1:
the entire chapter 8 (the last timeloop) revs it to high difficulty, as you now got fights with FOUR bosses at once, some of which are hard enough ALONE as earlier in the game. completely optional but as a RPG fan you're gonna try to clear em all right?
there's a fight i believe was a black mage, summoner, spiritmaster, and alchemist fighting you
the spiritmaster can do meteor for 9,999 damage (the max hp you can get, it's a one hit kill)
you're dealing with a summoner, like any FF game, painful multi target hits, bosses don't run out of MP
black mage well this dude does all teh black magic stuff, Firaga, blind all, silence all,
and this alchemist in the mix... regens his party, guard, shell, protect, all that
all in all the hardest fight i've ever seen in a RPG game,
every boss fight felt like i had to break game mechanics to win.
but, for some reason it's the most fun i've had in an RPG boss fight, it wasn't like you couldn't be cheesy as hell to win, hell this game has a lot of cheesing strategy.

...there's a actual secret boss fight on top of this, but they are ONE person, but they can use all your gimmicks, time stop, rewind, they also have 9999 meteor, and practically all the worst moves you've dealt with, but again, ONE PERSON, so, with a massive cheese that's NOTHING.

but... bravely second and bravely default 2 very dumbed down the nonsense, even on hard they're very casual, i mean BD1 was SUPER HARD, not surprising to dumb it down a bit lol.
all these games have like, "turn off EXP, job points, money" settings too on top of encounter rate change (can be 0%)
