I haven't seen that many Japanese drama films , but the few that I have seen I really enjoy. These are a couple that I have seen that I enjoyed and wonder if there are others similar to it or at least really good Japanese drama films that would be a good recommendation

No Longer Human
Suicide Club

Theres too many to count. During the 50s and 60s especially Japan put out so many of my favorite films. Akira Kurosawa, and Masaki Kobayashi are like my top directors. I also love the films Woman in the Dunes, Funeral Parade of Roses, and Shura.

Shoplifters_(film).jpg

Last year, I had watched Shoplifters (Manbiki Kazoku) and I thought it was pretty good. I also finally got around to watching Another Heaven (2000) and I REALLY liked that one. Surprisingly, the plot ended up reminding me of Saya no Uta. I also think Cure (1999) is also great if you haven't watched that one. Japanese movies, particularly darker ones, have an atmosphere that you can't find too often.

I need to watch more as well, but two Japanese drama films I enjoyed were Tokyo Sonata and 37 Seconds.
The latter was suggested to me by a former friend and I found it pretty relatable as I am disabled like the protagonist. Both made me cry during certain scenes.

There are others mentioned in this thread that I know of... mostly titles I haven't seen, but that interest me.
I've been meaning to watch Maborosi and After Life for years. They're by Hirokazu Kore-eda.
Someone posted about Shoplifters and that looks good too.

There's also a random film called Moonless Dawn. It has an ethereal feel like Lily Chou-Chou.
I never finished Lily Chou-Chou because it was confusing and it was hard for me to connect with the characters or situations. I tried watching it several times and it isn't for me, sadly.
Moonless Dawn is okay. I saw it about 4 times. It doesn't have much of a plot but I don't regret my time with it. I've seen worse. I believe it was made to promote an indie band called LOWPOPLTD.

I also saw a mention of Suicide Club on here, I watched that ages ago... it is rather provocative and I think there were unnecessary scenes.
There's a 'sequel' called Noriko's Dinner Table which I found super boring! Lol. Don't think I ever saw it in full. It's overly long and I didn't really care about anything that was happening.

I saw two of Shuji Terayama's works, they were Pastoral Hide and Seek and Grass Labyrinth. They're super experimental and don't make much sense. I normally enjoy these kinds of things, but these were average at best in my opinion. I always seem to bring up Shuji Terayama at some point, because his style does impact me in some way... and yet I am unable to enjoy his movies.
Speaking of weird shit, I absolutely love Tetsuo I, II and Pinocchio 964.
If you're into any of these, there's also Guinea Pig: Android of Notredame which features Tomorowo Taguchi (he was in Tetsuo). These are cyberpunk body horror ficks.
I tried watching Bullet Ballet once while high and I got so sick that I had to stop. Never came back to it.
Another one is Burst City, but that's more of a showcase of the Japanese punk scene. I thought it was alright.
I also have to check out Death Powder and Godspeed You! Black Emperor, among others.

I know more films that could be interesting, so maybe I'll return to this thread later.
