What are your favorite homebrew or unlicensed retro games?

The Machine is a great newer Gameboy game by Ben Jelter. The game is quick to get through, but has tons of branching storylines and multiple endings, so the replay value is through the roof.

A TMNT game with Game Boy style graphics, I forgot the name though.

I recently tried Alwa's Awakening on the NES and had a blast. Max already mentioned it, but Cave Story on Genesis is also surprisingly accurate to the original. Haven't played too much, but Astebros on Genesis is a neat roguelike/roguelite

EDIT: Forgot to mention Mega Man: The Sequel Wars on Genesis. Only MM4 is out as of this post but it is great

For sure Nazi Zombies Portable, it's amazing to me how far that came and that it's still being updated. I remember that was the first homebrew I ever tried for a modded console. My old PSP 3000, wish I still had that beast.

For the PSP we had a lot of homebrew ports, a counter-striker with local multiplayer, a turok-clone and hard tries on half-life. What was put onto the PSP under quake engine, those were my favs. Still are, i think i still have all of them stored somewhere

I've already mentioned them in another thread, but it doesn't hurt to repeat this here. For my dear, beloved old DSi, the ports of the ms-dos fps games by brilliant and talented elhobbs (created or perfected by him):
--cQuake, port of Quake;
--cHeretic, port of Heretic;
--DualHexen, port of Hexen,
--DScent, port of Descent;
--jfDuke3d, port of Duke Nukem 3d;
--DSDoom , port of Doom/ Doom2/ TNT/ Plutonia.
In addition to the basic games, with all of these ports you can play user maps, wads, mods and add-on episodes via argv argument launched through TwilightMenu (cfw) on a DSi.

Surely Cave Story port for Sega Genesis
I was so surprised with how good that port was. I played it on one of my retro emulation handheld. As someone that's played OG Cave Story a ton of times, I'm genuinely shocked how well they translated that game over to the Genesis.

Alwa's Awakening's NES demake is great. The original game has a weird floaty game feel while the demake gets tighter controls, and a new area. You lose out on some graphical fidelity but it's a very good time, I really do recommend it.

I have the PC version, but have not played the NES version yet.

Surely Cave Story port for Sega Genesis
I just got finished trying this out after finally getting to it after reading this. It's really impressive. I wish I had an Everdrive so that I could play on my legit Genesis. The music works really well with the sound chip as well. Cave Story is one of my all time favorites. Such a good game.

Port of the Zelda Trilogy on PSP by Vincent Jouillat. Also Disco Elysium for Gameboy is quite tiny but fun demo.

still havent played enough to choose a favorite but just finished playing a gb/c homebrew called Feed It Souls and man it was epic

Could you give me more infos about the Zelda Trilogy?
It's basically an extension of Zelda: A Link to the past for SNES. Originally developed for windows around 2006 and than ported to psp in 2010 by Randall Spychalla. It plays pretty much like LTTP and the first game Return of the Hylian is a direct sequel to the snes game.
EDIT
here is the link to the main site:
and the ports are available on gamebrew site and they were on cdromance i think

Night Knight by Juan J Martinez is one of my favorites for MSX. I've played it all the way through 3 to 4 times and will probably continue to play it again every so often. Just an exceptionally well done and fun arcade puzzle platformer.

Streets of Rage Remake
AM2R
SoR:R is such a great fangame to go with SoR 4. SoR X is also quite competent.

I loved doing AM2R as it was released, I should replay it in its latest update someday. I'm still glad Samus Returns got made.

So many good recommendations here, not sure if I have anything to add. To get the most out of SORR, I'd recommend downloading modules that recreate SOR1, 2 and 3 exactly, different from the main game routes. There are also such recreations for the 8-bit versions. I have no idea if the links are still alive, but if someone wants these things, I can help.

Xeno Crisis

Graphically looks nice, Soundtrack by Savaged Regime is amazing (Including a licensed track from Skyharbor), Gameplay is fun and replayable thanks to the seed generation it has. Only issue is that the weapon pickups & health aren't common and can make or break a 1cc run.
