A few months ago I found my old Sony Ericsson phone clinging onto dear life (the battery has since completely died) and I was amazed by how fun and interesting its gaming catalog still proved to be... especially the Gameloft crew, spearheaded by the "Nights" series and ports of PC classics such as "Oregon Trail" and "Carmen Sandiego".

Not only that, but some absolute maniacs out there have really been pushing this ancient hardware and doing incredibly things with it... I swear, someone ported freaking "FALLOUT" on it, as well as "Age Of Empires III" and even "MINECRAFT". It's amazing.

And now that technology has evolved enough to let us emulate a phone within a phone, I'm having way too much fun going through some of these forgotten classics.

What were your favorite games from this era of portable gaming?

I can't remember any games other than UNO. I think Sudoku but that was more of my dad's favorite. I had to be careful because they charged you even for browsing and downloading them. My sister ran up the bill one time and my mom freaked out. lol I had a Peter Griffin Quartet singing ringtone that went off in class one day at school. Everyone cracked up. XD

Ooooh, yeah.

I remember how the CTI Movil store would charge you like $1 per ringtone and $3 per game... and the complete dirtbags would sneak in demos in there without telling you. I about fainted when I spent my last $3 on ten minutes of gameplay.

I tried the God of War game. It was bad.
Only game I've played on phones before smartphones was snake. Played it on every nokia I've had.

Snakes was the only game I had in my Nokia N95, I didn’t really know you could get other games since it was my first phone, I thought I was stuck with the pre instaled games lol

My brother had an assassin's creed game on his phone (can't remember the model) I really liked that one

I recall this being nerd-tastic.
Felt like a John Carmack pet project, really. In a good way.

And it's guts (read: engine) were used to make "Orcs & Elves" for the DS

I can't possibly be the only one who remembers

Tower Bloxx and how oddly addicting it was.

I loved the guitar hero game for my LG Rumor 2. I think I also had Monopoly, but it was essentially the SNES version even more stripped.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force Destruct-O-Tron was the only flip-phone game i really played outside of the generic ones like Snake and tetris

You basically smack the object as high and far as you can go.

Does the T-Mobile Sidekick counts as a flip phone? because i also played The Bob's Journey games a lot when I had that

In those days I had a Nokia N79 smartphone. I probably had a hundred games installed on a 512 MB memory card, and there are too many favorites to write. But if choosing best one, then Ancient Empires II. It's like Advance Wars, but easier and on your phone!

I had a blast with Super K.O. Boxing. It was a Punchout clone. There was also a ping pong game that was similar but I don’t remember the name. I played these games on my breaks at work until I got an iPod Touch 4.

Orcs & Elves for the DS were in fact port (sort of) of mobile game. EA released mobile version more than year before DS version.

I loved many Gameloft games like first few java/symbian Asphalt games, Real Football series (especially Real Football 2008 3D and Real Football Manager 2010), Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Conviction, Chuck Norris: Bring on the Pain, Sexy Poker series ? , Spider-Man: Toxic City, first 2 Gangstar games, Zombie Infection, Lost: The Game and AND 1 Streetball.

But my most favorite java/symbian mobile game was Galaxy on Fire from Fishlabs and sequel.
