PS1 Experimental PSX games

PSOne/PSX library is full of weird and experimental games, so if thats what you're looking for then you're in for a treat!
I haven't experienced a lot of them, but one I have played that I would recommend is Intelligent Qube.
It's a "weird" puzzle game with an amazing orchestral score.

Check out Moon RPG Remix. It is an anti-RPG: you are a kid that gets immersed into his PSX and needs to save the souls of the creatures slayed by the game's hero. It has a unique art style and the story is beautiful. It was translated to English some years ago and they did a very good job.
Yo, that's awesome! I wanna play it right now!

Try "No one can stop Mr. Domino!"

Also I think Japan Studio have a lot of experimental games, even though there aren't many

If you are interested in learning the ins and outs of the ginormous PS1 catalog I recommend Sean Seanson's youtube channel. His obscure and Forgotten PS1 series is great. And there's another series about import Japanese games.

There can't be discussion about experimental PS1 games without mentioning Human Entertainment. They often made games that had some unusual gameplay and which were forerunners to other game genres.

Clock Tower on SNES series was one of the first survival horrors but even after survival horrors exploded in popularity Clock Tower series stayed it's own unique thing. On PS1 you have Clock Tower: The First Fear (port of first game from SNES), Clock Tower 2 (released on the west as Clock Tower) and Clock Tower: Ghost Head (spinoff that was released on the west as Clock Tower II: The Struggle Within). Funny thing is that first game was heavily inspired by giallo movies

Mizzurna Falls is another interesting game by Human Entertainment. It's basically open world third person mystery game heavily inspired by the Twin Peaks series. PS1 barely runs this game because technology was not there for such game

Bakusou Dekotora Densetsu also known as Art Truck Battle is another experimental gem in Human Entertainment library. This series is basically simulator of Japanese truck driver that focuses on dekotora subculture. You can paint your trucks and tune them to make some crazy designs and then drive to deliver stuff in order to earn money and make even more crazy truck designs. Soundtrack consist purely of enka music and it goes really hard.

Deception is fairly obscure series from Tecmo. You basically set traps to defeat your enemies, first game is played from first person view and rest of the series is third person. Series is set in dark fantasy world.

Kowai Shashin is a horror game where you exorcise cursed photos, it got fan translation. The game has some crazy rumors about it supposedly being cursed game

Linda Cube Again really weird JRPG that recently got translation patch

It's the mathematically unlikely amalgamation of "Jet Grind Radio" + "Parappa the Rapper" + "Street Fighter" = a rhythm fighting game.
Wild.
Worth it.
And, on CDR.
Go for it, it's an absolute blast. Especially with friends.

A bizarre experimental 1v1 robot arena fighter with RPG elements and cutesy visuals, I haven't seen much else like it.

I spent a good time playing Robo-pit back then. I was desperate for new Sega Saturn games since my selection for renting at Blockbuster Video was limited. I ending up buying it on a whim only based on a 'cool looking magazine advertisement using COD back in '96. Versus battles customization, and something about the arenas- the ambiance that made it all worthwhile. A sequel was released only on PS1, I never did get around to playing that one.

I tried to limit myself in my last post in order not to flood this thread with one long post but there are few other games that I would like to add to the list

Twilight Syndrome series is one of my favorite Japan only series developed by Human Entertainment. These are horror adventure games based around exploring spooky areas and paranormal activity. Their gameplay is middle ground between sound novels and survival horrors. Goichi Suda is listed as director of two first games (which in fact are one game split in two due to the development issues) but in fact he was more producer. Still he was director of Moonlight Syndrome, spinoff game to the Twilight Syndrome, that also served as first game in his Kill the Past series (it mainly consist of his games developed by Grasshopper Manufacture). Despite that Twilight Syndrome is overall important series for Japanese market and Suida51 is cult director, this series was never released outside Japan and never got fan translation. Series consist of following games:
- Twilight Syndrome: Tansakuhen
- Twilight Syndrome: Kyuumeihen
- Moonlight Syndrome
- Twilight Syndrome Saikai (this game has 3D graphics instead of 2D and continues main series story disregarding events of Moonlight Syndrome)
- Yuuyami Doori Tankentai (spiritual sequel to TS games made by Spike Co, Ltd after Human Entertainment went out of business)

I was always amazed how much games on PS1 were centered around preparing and serving food. This may not be as unusual game genre as in the 90s but still PS1 was one of first consoles that introduced such games. Titles that I know:
- Yakiniku Bugyou
- Manpuku!! Nabe Kazoku
- Yakitori Musume
- Charumera
- Ore no Ryouri
- Ramen Bashi

Dioramos is adventure/RPG board game, a genre that was completely absent on western market but it seems that it was quite popular in Japan in SNES and PS1 era. What is cool about Dioramos is it's aesthetics that remind me games like Final Fantasy Tactics and Hoshigami.

70s Robot Anime: Geppy-X is shmup that pretends to be super robot anime series from the 70s. It has really cool style where stages in the game are presented as if they were episodes of a fictitious episodic anime series named Geppy-X. Currently there is fan translation in the works.

Nemu Lu Mayu: Sleeping Cocoon is another super weird RPG from Japan. Some sources say that it combines elements of first person shooter and RPG in style of the King's Field series. It's hard to say by looking at the videos because this game looks to be very convoluted and psychodelic

There was a ton of different business simulation games on PS1, many of them were Theme Hospital ripoffs where instead of managing hospital player was managing fast food restaurants or convenience stores. But there were more untypical simulation games:
- SatelliTV (player takes role of TV producer, it was developed by Nippon Ichi Software)
- Free Talk Studio (player takes the role of radio DJ and choose different people to make interviews)
- Kyoto Maiko Monogatari (geisha simulation game)
- The Game Maker (video game company simulation)
- King of Producer (the same as above)
- Gamesoft wo Tsukurou - Let's be a Super Game Creator (another video game company simulator)

Yep. Total hidden gem! :)

I would like to mention "Tail concerto"

You control a giant robot and you capture thiefs. Also speaking of games where you control a "robot" I recomend this too:

(The Stand Alone Complex ps2 games it's pretty good too)
