I remember hearing DYKgaming speculate that nintendo sat on releasing Mother 2 to the virtual console because some of the in game branding looked too much like coke cola, and I also remember Shesez going on about how silent hll 2 has a jeans button texture that's ripped from Levi Jeans!! This is a crazy discovery I made!! (you couldnt even see it without camera hacks)

Meanwhile Silent Hill 1 doesn't give a f and just has a Jim Beam Whiskey poster, a Pepsi bench, Miller Beer sticker, screenshots from Lamberto Bava's Demoni, Indiana Jones and Die Hard

Konami has been selling it on the psn since like 2008 or something, I dont have a ps4 or 5 but I'm assuming they still do

If you wanna see the indiana jones movie theatre for yourself it's around here

Any other examples you're fond of?

I'm bummed the phone version of crazy taxi removed all the pizza huts and levi stores, they really added to the late 90s America vibe

I mean, Pikmin 2 is all about the product placement... and better for it, I think! Makes the game feel much more real-world when you're digging up Duracells instead of "batteries."

Honorable mention goes to Parasite Eve 2 and it's sporadic Coca-Cola branding.

Not-So-Honorable Mention goes to the dilapidated Pepsi Machines in the ill-fated Bionic Commando reboot. Probably not what PepsiCo had in mind when they signed off on that endorsement...

EDIT: The Pizza Hut branding from the NES Ninja Turtles Arcade Game is, maybe, the earliest product placement I can remember in a videogame. Though the Pepsi machine (and cans!) in Maniac Mansion is damn close...

Wow, this could almost be its own thread: "How Many Games Have Pizza Hut / Pepsi Appeared In??" 😝

The of the most bizarre examples has to be the replacing of Nuka Cola with Bawls Guarana in the ill-fated Fallout Brotherhood of Steel.

A good thing Sierra Petrovita didn't have different taste in 3. The Bawls Challenge doesn't have the same ring to it.

Product placement, psychological manipulation at its finest.

San Fransisco Rush: 2049 had weird out of place billboards for Slim Jims and Dickies pants and a few other weirdo things

The original Tapper arcade game was made as a Budweiser Ad.

It was pretty cool though, the cabinet even had little joystick shaped like beer tap for filling the beer glasses.
I never knew about that. Tapper is kind of hypnotically fun in its arcade simplicity.

I know right? I didn't know it was a Budweiser ad for the longest time either, since the first version I was exposed to as a kid was the root beer variant that came later. The original version was sold to bars, but since they also wanted to sell it to arcades and couldn't legally advertise alcohol to kids, they made a generic root beer version. The game is 100% functionally the same though.

I never played it, but it does sound fun. I came in contact with this one through the port comparison videos from Battle of the Ports.

Old 3D Realms games had a metric crapton of references to other games and brands like this Slayers poster:

As far as more deliberate and authorized ads go golden era NFS had a bunch.
