I think I should also bring up that I've also played a similar game, Clive Barker's Undying, another auteur-branded PC game from publisher EA, this one being a horror-themed FPS game with a yarn, world, and cast of characters created by the eponymous British horror master himself.

I've only tried it a bit, but it was super cool. Always intended to dive into it, but just haven't come up yet.

I REALLY loved Madness Returns though, one of those games I really wish would get a remaster because it suffers from being from that time where PC ports where almost unplayably bad/janky, and the console versions are locked at 30fps, even if you play it on a Series X/S, which is kinda lame for an action game.

There's definitely still an audience for these kind of "twisted fairy-tale" kinda games.

The reason for that is because the PS3 release was for Madness Returns. The American McGee's Alice game is available only as DLC for Madness, so it technically doesn't have a separate release.

I bought Bad Day LA because I loved Alice and Scrapland so much.

Let me repeat, I bought Bad Day LA. At least the game had a cool look to it. As a game, though, it was a bit of a mess. It was full of 2000's anti-Bush admin humor.

Excellent game. I loved the EA logo burning away to reveal the Cheshire Cat, the Loading screens that displayed a map tracking your progress and the names of each level. The cutscenes, the voice acting. But most of all I loved shredding Card Soldiers with the Vorpal Blade.

The sequel is also fantastic and deals with some pretty heavy subject matter whilst also increasing your arsenal and massively improving the platforming mechanics.

If you like the AMcG Alice games, you might also love The Path, a 2009 indie art game where you play as one of six tween/teenage girls on their way to their grandmother's house. You can choose to walk on The Path to get straight there, or get lost in the woods, and maybe encounter a wolf...maybe.

A playthrough lasts between 10-30 mins and the whole game can be completed in a couple of hours. You can still get it on PC.

I've only ever played the sequel, and remember quite liking it. Some day I should get around to playing the original. I've heard it's not quite as good, but the positive responses here are encouraging.
