I remember how Hex-based cheating was a HUGE thing for a while... but then it completely stopped, for no apparent reason.

Wanted to be able to create more than 25 units on Dune II? Wanted infinite health on Alone In The Dark? Wanted a ton of money on SimCity 2000? Get editing, boy (or gal)!

It was actually very annoying to do, but felt exciting at the same time... made you feel like you were literally hacking into your favorite game and outsmarting the developers themselves. And for 14-year-old me that was the coolest thing ever (yes, I was one nerdy bird).

Ever did that yourself?

If GameShark and ActionRePlay count, then yes. ?
Wanted to find a way to get Lulu's "Celestial Weapon" in FFX without enduring the miserable lightning-dodging sequence. ??

I think that's the only time I've ever used one/something similar, lol ?

It was gonna say that I didn't think those counted... but then, you ARE messing with the code, just not directly.

Did it work?

I have in the past. Mostly with Phantasy Star 4. But eventually I started messing with Gameshark/PAR codes themselves. My Youtube is loaded with this stuff. I had a code that reduced the enemy spawn rate in Deadly Towers. I'm not sure if it's marooned on my broken hard drive or buried in a forum somewhere. I also had a code that stopped and/or instakilled enemies in Action 52. And it pretty much worked on all games. That says a lot about the programming right there. That one may still be posted somewhere as well. I should look for them some time and try them out again.

Hex editors are the gateway drug to romhacking, so yeah I've messed around them a little bit. Anything from changing color layouts on characters to messing with stats. There's a huge community for this around GBA Fire Emblem games and I've dabbled in that.

Ahahaha, it did not, lol ??
I was playing the international version and the codes did squat ?‍♂️

I tried for an RPG Maker game that was particularly devious on its difficulty, I couldn't figure out what I was doing and promptly gave up. Like most things....
