I've noticed that in recent years, using emoji is looked down upon for some reason in certain corners of the internet. Kaomoji even more so (a Japanese-style emoticon that usually uses Japanese characters, Latin letters, and punctuation marks to represent an emoting face).

I wanna know what your opinion is; personally I'm starting to grow very fond of kaomoji. Wish they didn't have such a bad reputation, though (ᴗ_ ᴗ)

I don't particularly care one way or another, unless you pepper your every post with so many that it makes it hard to read.

I have a really hard time parsing sarcasm in text, so I think emojis help, and are fun. I don't think they should be used too much though, because they clutter the text easily. They're good for accurately describing an emotion or mental state, which I think is beneficial to text-based communication as a whole. :)

But for example, I like using the "😅" emoji alot, because it sort of implies a light-hearted message, and it often has a bit of self-deprecating humor to it.

The term emoji is actually japanese:
"Originally meaning pictograph, the word emoji comes from Japanese e (絵, 'picture') + moji (文字, 'character'); the resemblance to the English words emotion and emoticon is purely coincidental. The first emoji sets were created by Japanese portable electronic device companies in the late 1980s and the 1990s. Emoji became increasingly popular worldwide in the 2010s after Unicode began encoding emoji into the Unicode Standard."

ALSO: A fun little detail I noticed while playing Persona 3 was that Bébé, the french exchange student, is the only character who uses the classic ": )" styled emojis, since the game takes place in 2007 and the little smiley characters weren't standard in western phones back then.

I use a few of them every once in a while to get certain points across, since nuance doesn't come through text very often. My favorite is "🙃 " cause it conveys a sense of being completely lost but having a good time about it, and that's just kinda me lol.

I do find it freakin funny when people (mostly older folks) text and put emojis every other word like:

Oh boy was it hot 🔥 🥵 today! Gonna get some ice cream 🍦 later! Can't wait 🕐 for the rain! 🌧️☔

i always liked emoticons back when they were more used. i think kaomoji are disliked in english speaking spaces because it reminds people of weebs in general. as for emojis, i don't dislike them really but it seems like every single one has some kind of alternate meaning you need to be aware of. i'm just a bit too old to have been an emoji person.

I used to be in a crusade against them during my highly-aggresive teenage years (I was the owner of a particularly short fuse) because people would install them on MSN Messenger and other IM services and would hotkey them to replace common letters/words, resulting in half the conversation (or more) being plagued by animated, glittery BS that made my eyes hurt.

Nowadays, though... I don't mind them. Like Mark Manson said: "I have a limited supply of Fs to give, so I wanna use them correctly".

I find that any sort of emoticon/emoji/kaomoji is more helpful and universally understood for conveying tone through "text" than tone indicators (which I have never been fond of using myself, but they are common in some of the circles I hang around). Overuse of any sort of emoticon/emoji/kaomoji is, of course, distracting. Or funny! It depends.

I prefer to use kaomoji in more casual settings, or whenever I'm in largely Japanese-speaking spaces. They're too unprofessional for me to use when I want to be taken seriously. They are cute and expressive, though.

Emoticons are reliable, and emojis are more accurate / understandable than emoticons at times.

Aside from this, I have no preferences and I believe that anyone can use whatever they want, really.

EDIT: To add onto that last sentence, I do lean towards using emoticons since they're faster and easier to type on most keyboards I usually use.

I quite literally did this on MSN – I replaced every single character on my keyboard with an animated emoticon, and used that to speak with my friends for a while. I think they all wanted to strangle me to death after the first message sent. I wish modern chat clients would still let you do that.

LOL! It was HELL on dial-up, because you had to wait for them to load. Ever had to wait on words? XD

I always disliked any type of Emoji, Emoticon or any way of making funny faces in text except for occasionally :) :( or :/ But i sometimes feel obliged to use emojis in a conversation with people that like it because i don't want to seem weirder and more antisocial than i already am lol.
I grew up on the internet using imageboards tho, so i love seeing people use images and gifs to illustrate their posts

It definitely helps to show what emotion you're conveying, especially when the language you speak isn't the first language for others.

Emojis definitely grew on me over time, I wasn't really one for them and preferred emoticons until a switch flipped in me somewhere. They're just more expressive in general imo, and it's easier to set the tone of a message with one, especially if the person using it types out in a manner that's more dry.

"Hope you have a great day : p "
vs
"Hope you have a great day :p "

The intention of the first message could be as lighthearted as the second, but I feel like : p or : P doesn't convey that as much.

(Edit: I typed these out without spaces, but everything turned into emoji. You get the idea!)

This winds up being a touch excessive though lmfao

Also, kaomojis rock and I always thought they looked cool and appreciated the effort that goes into having some shit like this ready to send > ฅ^•ﻌ•^ฅ

Yeah, i get what you are saying. But i never actually had a difficult experience texting with someone because of it. Maybe i make too few conversations with people to actually start noticing a difference lol

It's different for native english speakers, or a conversation between only native english speakers. But outside of that? Confusing turns ahead.

I fw them

I like them all (except apple’s emojis, they’re unnecessarily detailed) , I think it’s fun adding a bit of colour to messages. They help convey emotions in a casual fashion in text. They’re also fun ::biggrin
