There are more, but these were just off the toppa my head and from experience :P
It's moreso the stereotype that every old school retro game was on some ungodly "BALL-BUSTING HARD AS TITANIUM STEEL IMPOSSIBLE UNBEATABLE JUMANJI SUPER ULTRA OMEGA BULLSHIT MAKE YOUR CHILD SELF CRY AND PISS THEIR PANTS" difficulty level when most of the time they either aren't as bad as people exaggerate or are incredibly fair and just require clever thinking and reflexes
Like I legit figured out the Boobeam trap in Megaman 2 without a guide on only my second attempt when I replayed it recently and aside from the respawning birds, Ninja Gaiden on nes is a p reasonable time challenge wise, etc.
Zero 2? Always found that one pretty tedious compared to 3 and 4. Especially the AWFUL ice level. “Yeah, let’s combine the slippery ice physics with upward ramps and pixel perfect jumps all the time!” The forest levels weren’t that bad but the chain rod controls kinda ruin them, they’re way harder to control than they need to be. Zero 3 and 4 on the other hand were incredibly easy I found, I didn’t have much of an issue with either that wasn’t related to a miniboss or being stuck fighting Craft for all eternity unprepared and having to restart the whole game. Zero 2’s mostly fun though, don’t get me wrong.
Oh yeah this question.
Tbh, many retro games aren’t that bad. If their only problems weren’t that they were in need of a manual, then most of the time it’s the localization. Especially if your publisher’s name is Working Designs.
Even old Mega Man, which has garnered a reputation for being unforgiving, really isn’t at all. Many of the bosses are made so that Buster only is a legitimate strat minus some exceptions that you need extra work in and special weapons will trivialize any boss unless the weapon is dogshit (oh hi Mega Man 5, why are all your weapons so TERRIBLE)

One of the gripes I had with Zero 2/3 was the ranking system and how the ex skills are tied to it. For some reason I find 3 the tougher one. Granted I haven't played them for quite a while now.
+1 for the Super Mario RPG mention! It is a very straightforward, easy game, as far as RPGs of that era go. Not a total pushover (you may still have to grind in spots) but if you take your time and really get the hang of the timing with the battle system, you can stroll through the game without too much trouble...
...unless you go after the secret boss, that is
I think the NES Mega Man games are pretty fair, as well - particularly if you know the boss order. One hangup is the password system, which usually doesn't save your progress through the Wily stages. They can be a slog. Newer releases with save state options make them much more manageable.
As far as easier classic games that can be beaten in one sitting, the OG Game Boy has some real standouts:
Super Mario Land
Kirby's Dream Land
TMNT: Fall of the Foot Clan
I think most two-player beat-em-ups have a pretty fair difficulty - not including Battletoads, of course! But the TMNT games usually aren't too bad with two players (the 16-Bit ones, in particular) and the same goes for the Final Fight / Streets of Rage titles. Things are a bit different if you decide to solo them, though!
As for a 3D game, I've always liked the difficulty balance in Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire. Pretty simple on the Easy difficulty, but ramping it up changes several parameters. You take more damage from enemies, but your default blaster is also more powerful. Enemies are also more accurate. Some stages have environmental hazards (the junkyard train level) which give warnings on the easier settings, but not the harder ones. One stage (the speeder bike chase) takes place at night on the harder difficulties, making it tougher to see.
I love those sorts of changes! Almost makes it feel like a brand new game on the tougher settings. SOTE is breezy on Easy, but brutal on Jedi. And I rarely think it is unfair - aside from the arbitrary checkpoint system used in some stages...
yall Megaman its NOT easy for first experience gamers. For easy games pre PS3 id put most Mario Games like 3, World, 64 and so. Personally i find Pokemon games for first RPG gamers really easy, maybe some bosses of the DS generations may be OP but in general they are so simple to play and a blast.

Fair, I agree. Especially since the majority are kinda ass like I got a perfect score for an EX weapon that’s borderline made useless compared to the defaults. There’s a few cyber elves that will actually raise your rank to A permanently (for the stage) in Zero 3 btw. Those elves tend to be in specific locations, I think I remember using a guide on them.
Only is easy because the Damage Inflicted/Received by Contact per Boss is 4 pts. Damage instead of 6 pts. of the previous installments and also the Rush Super Adapters such as the POW and the Thruster.
Pong (1972) and Combat (1977) although both games are only intended to be played by 2 Players in competitive (VS.) due to the fact that AI (CPU/COM) did not exist since then in those games.
I mean, it was intended as a introduction for the genre (some detractors are right to say it went overboard tho) but as someone that beat the final boss fair without exploiting his healing weakness, the game can become tough at times
I though i was the only one that think it as easier, the weapons are mostly situational (at least they work unlike 5) but the level design and the bosses themselves feel more forgiving
