Honestly I only played the Mega Drive/Genesis version, but the Japanese version, which is fairer and more fun and as a bonus has dialogues and continue system with respect to the western version, which makes it the Japanese version as the best regional way to play the game. although looking closely the SMS version is not as good as the Mega Drive/Genesis but the attempt to adapt it was made.

The 8-bit version is serviceable, but you're much better off playing the Genesis version; specifically, the JP version. The difficulty is much more balanced than the US version and it has dialogue scenes that were removed from the US release.
