What is Rigel Engine? This project is a re-implementation of the game Duke Nukem II, originally released by Apogee Software in 1993 for MS-DOS. RigelEngine works as a drop-in replacement for the original executable: It reads the game's data files and plays just like the original, but runs natively on modern operating systems and is written in modern C++ code. Compared to running the original in an emulator, RigelEngine offers many modern enhancements and usability improvements, including: wide-screen mode smooth scrolling & movement mode with increased frame rate quick saving improved game controller support extended modding features Github Repository Zoom […]

That port really helps the experience, the original was so choppy and fast at the same time. Wish the first game had such a good port

Early games were made for specific speeds of computers and didn't use system timing at all and wanted/needed every cycle they could keep; You'll see this in the original Mechwarrior for example, where it runs as fast as possible and if you are on a faster than say 8Mhz machine it is too fast. While games that did make use of the system timing (alley cat for example) will work even on more modern systems with minimal changes.

Tools to artificially slow down the system or the like no doubt will have varying success. Though i think most older games are run through DosBox 0.74 anymore, I'm not quite sure how faithful it is to matching cycles to instructions which could cause a choppy yet fast effect (instruction timing can be very finicky, as i recall most were 3-8, while multiply was like 40 and divide was like 160-400 cycles. While a VM like dosbox could assume everything is 1 cycle each, so when you set it to 8000 cycles you don't really know what you're getting)

Regardless, a good port is a good port :)

Widescreen is the thing that makes this game actually playable.
Cause originally, it's one of those games where you walk on the wrong side of the screen, and the only way to make the game somewhat playable was, to turn the speed down.

Thanks for the upload!

More than just a port of the base game from '93, it's also like a reimplemented version that improves frame rate, establishes widescreen, greater compatibility with various types of controllers, and other features that serve as a second chance to play this classic. 👍🏻👍🏻
Once again, fans doing a better job than most publishers at preserving classic titles. Thankfully the guy responsible for this port was hired to work on the Evercade release of this game.
