Dragon Quest Megoothread

I wish the PSX version was translated.

I heard someone was translating it but haven't heard any update from it. We got much luckier with the PS2 Tales of, or the DQ V PS2 remake, just to mention.
I've never played Dragon Quest but I love the Toriyama art style and Square Enix makes a whole lot of peak.

If you don't know where to start with the series I highly recommend XI S on Steam and then go with the HD-2D Erdrick Trilogy.

DQ V being one of the most appreciated game it was understandable. I don't know if it's easier to translate a PS2 game over a PSX one.

I know that Torneco/Taloon's Mystery Dungeon had a PSX sequel that was released to the west but I dunno why the SNES and PS2 ones weren't.

Also why the heck the GBA only had one Dragon Quest Monsters game and no tentatives of any ports nor other release on it? Squarenix didn't like this console or something?

Don't forget about these:
  • Slime Mori Mori
  • Torneko's Great Adventure 3
I mean, nah, Square Enix (thanks mainly to TOSE) did kinda liked that platform. Even if I can genuinely think only to Sword of Mana (which was still a remake of SD1/FF Adventure) and FF Tactics Advance as the main original games.

The Rocket Slime series has been done dirty sadly... The third game on the 3DS is japan only and since the 3DS has region lock you cannot play it normally...

Torneko 3 is good but I'm surprised they've downscaled a PS2 game on the GBA. It almost feels like it's more fitting in there than a 3D game. I wish there was a translation for it.

I've never played a DQ game before until I saw someone mention Dragon Quest 8 some months ago somewhere and I got curious. I'm currently 60+ hours into it and I love th3 game so much. No doubt, if I had it on PS2 back then, it would have become one of my favorite games of all time. It has that same vibe as Dragon Ball of it being this fun adventure, traveling the world thanks to Toriyama's beautiful art painting the world.

I picked the ps2 version over the 3DS version because there was a texture pack that looked more appealing.

It feels like an actual crime there's no official remaster on PC that combines the best aspects of the PS2 and 3DS versions together.

After this, I don't know which I'll pick up next. I'm glad I picked up the series now rather than never.

Right, I'm surprised Square Enix never did anything for one of their most popular entries. Even V is sadly only on the DS as its latest port.

Making the enemies on-field should be optional but I'm all for speeding up battles and choosing between the orchestral and MIDI soundtracks (and having the possibility to use the japanese UI too).

I'll be honest: I've always preferred the MIDI rendition of DQ's soundtrack over hearing real instruments and I dislike what they've done to the battle UI in the west.

This is how it should've been:

The latest port is actually the mobile version. Sadly for us, that's what serves the original fanbase best.

Now please port VIII to PC.

Sadly the Dragon Quest games just bounces me off .

Tried Dragon Quest 1 and 2 snes remakes and they rather bore me .
But maybe because its a bit too straight forward for me .

I think i should try it someday again but ... it just doesnt catch me right now .

Maybe nostalgia is speaking but DQ4 is my favourite entry in the series (DS remake).

I wish the PSX version was translated.
It's mine too. Out of 1, 2, 4, 5, 8 and 11 that I have played, 4 is far and away my favorite. I love the way the story is told in chapters, Growlanser 5 does the same thing, and it allows for more character development and worldbuilding through seeing all the character's different sides of the story, their perspective, and their location before they all converge in the final chapter.

The mobile ports are a bit "bootleggy" to me. Especially when DQ 123 on the Switch were like that before they got a proper remake.

I think that with the Zenithian trilogy they made more character development.

Sure, DQ III also had a deeper backstory with the MC's father (especially on the GBC port) but your party was a tabletop-like one which are custom made classes and characters, only the MC was important. DQ II had the MC's cousins but they weren't as interactive (unless you play HD2D).

DQ IV made every characters important with a different goal and personality and you even had Torneko who isn't even a warrior but a merchant. It's almost like Phantasy Star II which came a bit earlier.

The biggest mistake imo is that Enix made IV for the NES instead of waiting for the 16-bits hardware like Squaresoft did for their FF IV. It's still impressive for the Famicom nonetheless.

Unlike many other classic JRPGs, the early Dragon Quest games are fairly accessible. If you want to get into the series, the first 6 games are widely available.

I've seen the intros and heard the OSTs of GBC Dragon Quest and I gotta say I love them.

I've never played a Dragon Quest game.
Which one is the shortest?

Which one is the shortest?
The first one but it's quite barebone compared to the rest of the franchise.

If you play a RPG expecting a short length game instead of a compelling story it's not exactly the right mindset to have.

I'd say that while III may drag a bit too long IV and V have a nice pace on the DS.

I think VII VIII and IX are way longer.
