News DOS BOX Pure Unleashed (Coming 10-18-2025)

Dude, that's freakin awesome.

Thanks for the heads-up. I always hated how convoluted DOSBox is, I can use it.
It's just a pain in the ass. This though, looks badass. Guess I'll have to try it when it's launched.

An excellent MS-DOS emulator but the fork called Pure Unleashed is much more complete than the other forks of this DOSBox emulator and it also has Win95 and Win98 support but on an experimental basis for the time being.

You're welcome Captain. I too will try it myself when it comes out.

I use Staging for the great adaptive video filter. That said, overall usability isn't any better than the usual. I have my own little archaic system to get things to roll. I'm always up for trying different (hopefully better) iterations, though.

Yeah honestly, I don't fool with DOSBox period or haven't in ages.

I have an XP machine just for running DOS-based games I like, so swings and roundabouts I suppose. But I will try this with a Linux system I have, if it has a Linux installer I mean. If not, I'll try it on a Windows 10 machine I have just to see how simple and friendly it is.

Am curious after all

I used to dislike playing Doom via DosBox because of how it felt.

Finally we're seeing an user friendly UI for it and I'm rejoiced.

Does that mean that virtually every Winn9x games can be played windowed without tinkering?

for win95 3d games, 86box is the better choice, though it still has issues with Voodoo synchro on some games.
V6 is expected to be a big rewrite of code

I don't think the compatibility will be that high. But I think it'll cover a lot of the simpler games for sure.

I'll be doing testing later today when the emulator releases so hopefully we'll know more soon.

This will be a standalone version of the retroarch core that I have used for 3 years now. So far it ran everything I throwed at it, including several win98 3D accelerated games. I even wasted time here writing an extended tutorial guide about installing win98 and the 3D drivers. This will apply for that fork as well. Just like in Retroarch, you'll still have to install win98 like it's a VM, source rom files for MT32, etc. Git gud with "tinkering", its an essential part of DOS gaming.

Time for me to download a ton of Dos games on the Repo.

Doom could be the first but there are a ton of sourceports.

On the other hand I'd like to get Catacombs and HoverTank since they're pre-Wolf3D games by the same devs.

PS: I need some help regarding the mouse, how to disable vertical movement sensitivity?

Very nice, I had almost forgotten about something like that. But it's nice that such things still exist. Thank you 👍

Dosbox-x was the gamechanger for me to leave Dosbox behind after so many years.Let´s see what Dosbox pure can do.
