Manga Does anyone here loves Osamu Tezuka?

I'm a huge fan of Tezuka! I adore his works, especially the ones from the 1940s to 1950s such as Lost World, Metropolis, and Nextworld. Despite his simple line art and cutesy art style from that era, he managed to draw feature length sci-fi stories with complex and cinematic scenes with it. One of his manga that I really love would be Fossil Island, which is an omnibus of multiple stories, each with a different genre. The whole experience that I felt when reading that manga was just magical, it feels like reading bedtime fairytales. The scene featuring the Indians standing atop a cliff while the page transitions to a different story left a huge impression on me.

Astroboy was the first anime i ever seen when i was a child. I was COMPLETELY obsessed with it, i really wanted to BE Astroboy and i would beg my mother to buy anything Astroboy related. When i got internet for the first time around that time i would spend all day searching for Astroboy related stuff even without having no understanding whatsoever of english so when i would see fanart of him i would believe they were official stuff lmao. To me as a child he was on the same level of Sonic and Banjo-Kazooie, and this was one hell of a status

That's what I also really like about his early manga, the Disney influences in his art style! Many people might not like it and considers it to be outdated, but I personally don't see anything wrong with it, I think it actually blurs the line between American comics and Japanese manga!

Also, I haven't read Ayako yet, but I've heard great things about it! Manga Youtuber Immortallium considers it to be one of his most favorite manga of all time.

In the eighties I saw Astro Boy, Princess Knight (it. Zaffiro), Jungle Emperor (it. Kimba) and little else, but I didn't like his artwork much, even at that time: I preferred the works of Go Nāgai, Y. Tomino, Rumiko Takahashi.
I also showed some episodes to my son, but he wasn't enthusiastic either.

That is actually fair. Because even in 80s Japan, many people there at the time also considered his children works to be outdated. I think that's one of the reasons why Tezuka began making more mature gekiga works in the early 80s when he started losing his audience.

If you like the edgy works of Go Nagai, then perhaps you might like Tezuka's edgy works such as Ayako, MW, and Message to Adolf (although those still features semi-cartoony art style)

We need to see what you mean by "edgy". Maybe you consider Nagai's Harenchi Gakuen (shameless school) and Kekko Kamen as such? Well, I liked those!

Hehehe! I had already understood before. I was just making a joke.
A few years ago I re-watched all the episodes of the original Devilman with my son: the plots are compelling, and its theme music is catchy, but as a graphic trait it is quite crude, bare and childish. The worst artwork by Nagai (in the anime, I mean), but the storyline of the episodes is exciting. The three OVAs from the nineties are graphically better.

Anyway, the works by Tezuka that you mentioned unfortunately have not been dubbed in italian, but I will take a look at those subtitled in english. Thanks for the advice.

OH HELL YEAHS!

As a kid i only knew Astro Boy, and that because of the 2003 version (Never knew, let alone saw the 80's and B&W version) and fell in love with the man's work after playing in an emulator Omega Factor (EASLY the best licensed game on the portable) but before that i used to watch Black Jack in Animax after Middle School, easly the best Mangaka who knew how to mix serious and adult topics and his signature Quirky drawing style and keeping the seriousness

@Kyuhamiko , I forgot to mention the movie "Hi No Tori" (the firebird), which was dubbed and divided into five short episodes in my country. That one really impressed me, for its epic plot, sometimes touching, condensed in an hour and a half of animation. Very beautiful. I recommend it to everyone.

I hesitated making a thread for him but I'm glad to see it.

I still remember when I read some of his stuff (especially Black Jack) in a second-hand manga shop and fell in love with his simple yet effective style and storytelling.

Alas, when I talked about him to some of my buddies that liked anime (mostly One Piece/Naruto/Dragon Ball) they were like "Who? This looks like it's for little kids" and I've never talked about him ever again with them.

I think some may not be fan of the old roundness of his style (since it's from half a century ago for some of his work) but this is quite deceptively since his stories are quite mature and some events are quite hard to read.

I have read The Story of the Three Adolf like two years ago (I wanted to read it way before like with Maus but couldn't until I've finally got to find one in a library along with Nausicaa and Akira).

I'm planning on finding Dororo and read the remnant of Black Jack I haven't finished reading yet.

Right here, brother, Adolf, MW, and Buddha are some of the best manga has to offer. People greatly overlook Tezuka just because it looks old and perhaps think just because something is decades old, it has lost its staying power, but Tezuka fucking rocks

OMG MEEEEEE I LOVE OSAMU TEZUKA!!

(Ahem) Yeah, I really like him a lot. I haven't read all of his manga, but I have read a lot of them. My favorite of his series is Black Jack and I sometimes just reread all of it over a few days just because I could. Other than that, I really liked reading Hi no Tori, Rainbow Parakeet, and Dororo.

If anyone is interested, I can go through my Anilist and give my thoughts on each one I've read so far. (I plan on reading more of them in the future.)

His humour tends to be weird sometimes and he may have been a closet furry too but I like how memorable his style ended up to be.

The movie Tokiwa so no Seishun (1996) involved him but with a minor role.
