N64 Do you think that a full Pokemon RPG could have worked on the N64?

My point is look at pokemon it´s been the same shit for decades it could been different on PS2 or and still be a banger and still be family friendly. Reason Palworld became so big because some one dared to make something different with monster catching make something new and refreshing and look even better than the switch pokemon.
Sorry again but no, being different isn't always the right thing to do.

Palworld is a great Ark Survival type of game but I simply refuse the franchise to let go the "node-based" level design and the turn bases battles in favour of real time combats in an open world.

Or just make it a spinoff like PMD was.

That´s why people loved that game it was pokemon esk but diffrent refreshing. Last time Pokemon did something very diffrent was when they combined pokemon with Nobunga's ambition or the Rangers series But when was the last time we saw that 2010 ? well sure we got new Pokemon snap in 2021 but comon it´s was just and upgrade of the N64 games.
Pokémon Conquest, Rangers, Snap and Mystery Dungeon were spin-offs, like I said above I'm fine if they're just spin-offs, not replacing the actual gameplay from the mainline entries.

People want modern games to be modern if they wanted old pokemon they just emulate it or play on their old GB or GBA or DS or 3ds.
You seem to confuse modernity with removing what made the series what it was.

It's the same issue I have with God of War PS4: they've made a different series out of the IP.

Making things more "Modern" for the sake of looking modern is bad. Making something modernised while keeping the core gameplay and principle is better.

I same the same thing for the Xenoblade chronicles and Bayonetta 2-3 if they where not stuck up Nintendos ass they could maybe sold better been better of yet be a bit different. I mean look at poor Xenoblade 3 manage to sell 1.9mill I bet a PS4-5 + PC version that could maybe even sold at least 5+mill.
You think that sales are the thing that matter? Bayonetta and the Beat'em up genre are niche regardless of exclusivity. Since the PS4+PS5 have a ton of JRPGs on them this would mean that there would be more competition on the platform therefore that would also mean they wouldn't systematically sell well either.

And we all know what happens with game franchises that don´t sell well they become EXPENSIVE as fuck and maybe never even return what so ever.
I don't recall Megaman becoming expensive despite it having one new game per decade since the last one.

My point is I believe Pokemon could be equally as big not being locked to Nintendo and maybe we could get the change in the series.
You think that Gamefreaks will automatically make better games if they weren't on Nintendo hardware? Are you sure? I think the issue is deeper than that.

Any RPG would have worked on N64. The fans from the SNES moved over and waited for a flood of games that never showed up.
The mainstream FF7 TV ad campaign eviscerated Nintendo. People saw those commercials and started jumping ship.
Although the N64 still had masterpieces that redefined gaming as a whole (Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time) and that Rareware's games are still memorable to this day while many PSX games were also shovelwares or aged badly because they didn't know how to properly do 3D.

FF VII, SotN, RE, TR, MGS, Tekken 1-3, Crash and Spyro were notable examples but behind them there were a ton of average-to-bad.

I'm not all that well-versed on the system, but I recall there being an uproar when they managed to get Resident Evil 2 ported into the console (cutscenes and everything!), because people were now questioning whether the excuses not to have FFVII in there as well were BS, specially since Nintendo had been teasing that "drive" add-on hard.

What a wild, wild era of gaming.
FF VII selling itself mainly on the cutscenes is something I don't really like, the base game even without it was good because it was a well made JRPG.

Today the pre rendered cutscenes aren't that pretty and honestly I prefer in game ones.

Yes! It has full potential! I mean look at Quest 64 (I know is a not good game) but imagine summon a pokemon it can work I mean look at Mega Legends is also on N64 combines the exploration with Pokemon Stadium battle then it's possible.

When I was a kid, I was convinced that there was going to be a Pokémon JRPG on the N64. The battle system was going to look visually like Pokémon Stadium, with the camera pans and effects, but it was going to be with an active party of three Pokémon, buildable from the entire 151, all of which would eventually be catchable, breedable, or attainable.

I was picturing an FF7 or FF8-style game in the Pokémon setting. And it was going to be a narrative RPG, too, with cutscenes and sidequests and secret bosses and the like.

As of until now I still can’t believe that Nintendo forgot about Metroid during that era. They even didn’t bother putting a Fire Emblem title on that console. Konami’s Hybrid Heaven is a real fine example bold experimentation. N64 truly got hardware power. But I think that what the rumor I heard about the former Nintendo head honcho is true. Yamauchi hates rpg and its fandom.

I wanna say im sorry every for going of rail.

Anyway Ikagura sorry for arguing with you and your correct in allot of things there. I just felt like if game freak had more freedom maybe they had more creative freedom maybe change up pokemon while still letting it be a RPG collecting game. I mean after 29 years it´s basicly the same story over and over you play as a kid collect monster with your goal collect badges and beat the Elite 4.

Could be cool if there is a pokemon game just like any other pokemon game but the story is your a young teen or kid if that´s a must and your goal is to collect pokemon´s and become not the best trainer but become a professor and the in the squeal your charter is that new professor.

But it feels like when they are locked to Nintendo which like allot of big companies hate to take risk you get the same game over and over just with some new mechanics.

And as you said Xenoblade would maybe not done that well having to compete with other RPG´s but I still belive the game could become maybe bigger game if it also was sold on steam.

And as you said sells are not everything but with more units sold means bigger budget for the next game does it not ? That´s what I wanna believe.

Anyway sorry if I came of aggressive but I have a passion and love for games and I feel Nintendo strangle hold on games to their platform only does not help what so ever instead I believe it hinders potentials.

Unfortunately the N64 cartridges just were too darn small, so the graphics wouldn't have been 3D but like Super Nintendo 2D quality.

Also how would you have done trading? You would have needed the transfer pack.

Palworld isn't a RPG so I don't know if it would've still been a good idea.

I'm not asking pokémon to become a crafting/survival open world kind of game, that would not fit the series nor its core mechanics.
Palworld IS an RPG, look up the description for RPG (role playing game).

I don't see why not. Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow weren't actually very big games. A game roughly the same size as one of them in 3d would have been possible. I feel like it would have had that weird kind of empty feeling a lot of n64 games had though and overall been kind of janky and not very good. I doubt gamefreak would have utilized the n64 hardware properly and it probably would have been more disappointing than anything else. I bet if some enterprising romhacker/n64 modder type individuals were to try making one though these days they could probably make a pretty good n64 pokemon game.

I saw gameplay and while it was nice I don't see turn based combat, unless those were added in an update.

But I don't care about the Open World Survival aspect personally.
