I remember having a lot of fun just browsing the airwaves with my Walkman and listening to "lonely hearts" shows deep into the night, but then I got an MP3 player and it all sort of fell by the wayside.

Having all my music ready and ad-free was such a ginormous step forward that I just couldn't imagine getting back into pure radio, but I kind of miss it sometimes, too, as a gem from an earlier, forgotten era in which the only way to listen to some songs was through those stations that played stuff from unaffordable new releases.

What about you?

no, but that's because of where i live. I get nothing but Ohio, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania stations, and it's either pro Trump propaganda all day and night, or just country music. I feel like i'm stuck in some redneck nightmare.

Even though internet access is widespread in my country, radio remains a popular and trusted medium, especially for local news and community updates. Since it's a small country, it's not unusual to see people still tuning in regularly. I often turn on the radio myself to stay informed and connected to what's happening around me.

Practically every day, yes :->

But! Where I live (way out on the West Coast) there are no dedicated local stations. OTA Broadcast stations are more or less glorified Internet Radio outlets that are fully automated, running and re-broadcasting pre-scheduled playlists and content.

I do enjoy the "local" ESPN station for some of their talk radio segments - all nationwide shows, of course. And when it's hockey season, the local team (Seattle Kraken) even has every one of their games broadcast over the air. I have so much nostalgia for listening to sports live on the radio (didn't have cable or decent TV reception growing up) and that scratches the itch nicely.

One side note, though. If I turn the radio on and it's broadcasting a football game, it immediately gets turned back off 💀

I would love to. I grew up on the New Jersey shore and we picked up the NYC radio stations, they were the best in the world. Now I live in upstate NY and one of the three radio stations I can actually get is the crappiest rock/top 40/popular music station, it blows. I really miss Seton Hall Pirate Radio ::hellmo

The only times I find myself listening to the radio is when I'm going somewhere with my mother in her car and her car radio is perennially set to the one local radio station that plays 80s golden hits. It's glorious.

When I was driving from Seattle to Southern California in August, I knew I was close to home when 91.5 KUSC came in clearly. It's just classic music, but if I'm in a car that I'm driving here, that's what it's on. Nice relaxing background music, very slight interruptions to ask for donations or give info on the pieces being performed, and that's all I need.
