Just had the overworld map from Persona 2 ringing into my mind and thought about this question. Do you like the older style of Persona 1 and 2 or the newer style starting from Persona 3 onwards ? And if so why do you prefer the newer or older style?

I liked Persona 2 very much. I played also the newer Persona games, only completed the 5th game though.

I much prefer the gameplay, pacing and overall presentation from 3 onwards but the ambience and setting in Persona 2, especially Eternal Punishment is my favorite.

My favorite gameplay-wise is 3/FES/Portable and 5, but I don't like the story and the pacing of the games and it really saddens me how Royal destroyed the plot-line of 5.

I dont like the visual novel elements of the later games, I take the dungeon crawling and high encounter rates of early games over the life sim elements of the later games

Neutral. Persona 2: Innocent Sin, Persona 3 (R or not), Persona 4 or Persona 5 are (at least) great (I'm not keen on the first Persona and I haven't played Eternal Punishment yet). Having said that, I must admit I slightly prefer Persona 3 Reload and Persona 4 Golden - they are on my Top 10 RPG.

I don't know if Metaphor Re:Fantazio counts. If it does, it's also very good (even if I perhaps expected a bit more from it).

Edit : For me Metaphor is almost a fantasy spinoff of Persona 5 :sneaky:

if Metaphor counts, then Maken X does too.

3 Onwards, tried to play the first ones after finishing FES (for the record my first one was Persona 4 in a chipped PS2), after lots of discussions since people wasn't able to make their flipping minds about which one was the best or at least the good i tried to finally play the OG versions and my patience ended like

I don't hate the newer style, but I only really connected with the third one(in my book the other ones try to hard to be cool and hip). Some of it's themes, like the acceptance of the finite and taking responsibility for your actions flow rather well in the narrative.
Overall i think I prefer the older ones (including the "Persona prototype" Shin Megami Tensei If, bad dungeon design aside), less limited in your Persona/Arcana composition, also liked the fact that the older personas had an interconnected world from If to Eternal Punishment.

Honestly, among all the games of the Persona Franchise that I have played, I only played the 2, 3 (FES and Portable) and 4 (Vanilla) where both games are from the classic formula of the saga, at least I guess.

Turn-based gameplay-wise Persona 1 is best for me because you can scare off monsters with hip-hop dancing!!! But until 3rd game dungeons are too bothersome, even navigating around the town. And then I dislike anime aspect of 2nd game and all.

I dislike "relationship aspect" of later games. It makes sense for the sake of Carl Jung's theories but you lack time so cannot build your relationship with everyone. It's a BS system. Games force you to replay the game without decent new game plus whatsoever.

So my answer would be wishing not to develop a Persona game as the previous ones, but developing a game that doesn't have any weakness of the each game + taking all the pros from previous game and combining into one because each game does whatever they do good in their own context so I like each game in their own context so it doesn't mean any game in the series is "better" than the other.

To be fair, the persona series as a whole is not known for interesting dungeon design, they're little more than "hallway simulators", with high encounter rates and the first uses the Megami Tensei approach first person dungeon crawling with boring repeated textures ad nausem.

I would say I like Persona 5 dungeons the most but they are ruined with characters talking about everything + BS tasks to do just to do simple things. Never liked environmental puzzles whatsoever.

So I like Persona 4 dungeons because they are faster to deal with and they are simple but if they had Persona 5 dungeon design it would be the best Persona dungeon there would be.

kind of funny I own all 5 of the game. Persona 1,"2 Innocent Sin" ,3,4,5.

But I only beaten Persona 1 and played a bit of 3. I need to beat 2 then 3.4.5. But I have yet getten of my ass to do so. Im more fan of the OG series and the spin offs Devil survivor, Strange journey, Soul hackers.

But if I had to say it I prefer Persona 3 I seen my partner play 5 but not fan of what I seen.

Story and aesthetics I prefer 1 & 2. Their gameplay does get kinda repetitive though and not in a good way. 1 tries to be a very complex game with thousands of elements, party formation and whatnot, but fails to truly explore any of its systems. Or at least the PSP remake failed, never played the og PS1 version. 2 streamlines things a bit, but its mostly just a grindy experience, or if playing the PSP remake of IS, its just pointless random battles that prevent you from listening the cool dungeon music as everything is too easy anyway and I recommend just bypassing everything by using estoma. Also I am one of the few persons that prefer IS over EP, EP has a good cast, but it relies too much on variations of the same events of IS and whenever it promises anything new the result is often just okay at best. It's like the game never reaches its full potential, it rather feels like a regression of IS.

3 onward I just think its too much. I don't hate all anime tropes and whatnot, but I don't really want to go to school and do all that boring stuff and have to listen funny anime banter every single second. If anyone say 2 is anime, then 3 onward are 10x more. At first it can be enjoyable but these games really don't know when to end, often going for 100h+. Being also locked with calendar with deadlines for everything is annoying for me. And I hate how many things they dropped, like now only the main character is able to change his personas because he is this super hyper special person, the extra elements are mostly gone and battles work much more like mainline. That being said even though its less unique, the battle and overall gameplay is much more enjoyable. Also 5 has some really good dungeons, its the closest we got to the dungeon design of Nocturne and DDS era atlus.

Well you may skip to 4th and just enjoy a heart-warming murder mystery "great fun friendship" moments instead lol.
