PS1 Do you own a PSX? - Lets Talk Mods!

So I recently found a $15USD PSOne just like the one I bought during my University years to play all the gems my game friends would lend me to help me culture myself, lol. They were busy with PS2 games (2005ish) and would not care to lend me a bunch of games for whole semesters.

Anyways, this "new" PSOne came unchipped, and we all know PSX games are expensive now, I only have an original Final Fantasy VII (I am happy I got it before prices became unreal), and wanted to play a bunch of games I have been emulating for years.

So I searched for options and learned about UniROM and FreePSXBoot, which is insane! Last time I checked Tony Hawk was the latest SoftMod.

So what about you, guize?
Do you play your PSX physical games on PS2 instead?
Do you only play Originals?

Which geek facts about PSX modding do you know or like?

I flipped my psone over when it stopped reading discs. That's about the extent of my PSX modding since all of them have had modchips installed somewhere along the way. Except my original PSOne.
I wanted to get some things like those fancy memcards and such, but after swapping a couple lasers I figured that putting my money into getting a mister would be a wiser choice instead of pouring money into keeping my ancient consoles alive and breathing. Now I just have to worry about my CRT's
I still ended up getting some of these accessories for my ps2 though.

Yay, congrats for your purchase :) Not long ago I tried to give myself a bit of culture as well, when I found a cheap xbox360: after many years I've been able to play FF13 and Eternal Sonata, two exclusives I had missed (sure, FF13 is not xbox exclusive, but I never owned a ps3 nor a I have a pc capable of playing that game). It's always a joy to find items (consoles, games) that are part of our good memories and good times, especially when they have a cheap price and they are kept in nice conditions!

Before people mention it in the thread, there’s a special unit known as the PSX that some people have in their collection, so you may get some people you're talking about that :p.

But, more on topic, the PlayStation 1 is one of my passion consoles! I’ve taken a ton of time into making sure my system is the best looking and running it can be, and am looking at the import market to expand my library. I’ve also grown an obsession with the long box games for the system, and I generally find the early days of PS1 to be the most interesting. Ridge Racer and Jumping Flash! are my two long box games, but I’m eager to find more in good shape.

As for mods, I would really only be interested in a region free modification. If I’m really desperate to play any game, I have a modded PSP and PS3 that can allow me to demo games so to speak ;)

I have an SCPH-1001 I got for $5 at the same con where I got my Vectrex.
It was in a pile of other PS1 consoles and it works great for PS1 games. I recently gave it a spring cleaning and even going so far as to clean the PCB with IPA and a toothbrush for the old flux.
I'll probably only be using it for physical games and maybe some specific backups since I have a Modded PS1 Classic for all my roms. I'm really looking forward to getting a Guncon at some point and playing through RE: Survivor. Unirom looks interesting, thanks for the info!
