To me, there's nothing more beautiful than seeing a modern (or impressive-looking) game reimagined as its bare-bones essentials, and I found that that's when they truly shine, when they can't wow you with their looks or sounds and have to reel you in with their stories, characters, settings and gameplay. I just find the whole thing oddly inspiring.

Some of my favorite games on this category include Portal 64 and Resident Evil 0 for PS1.

Demakes are really underappreciated in my eyes and deserve a lot more attention. I like the Monster Hunter Color like Demake art made by someone on Twitter.

More demakes and ports to less powerful consoles need to exist, they are testaments to creative development and programming, I'm always fascinated by things like the unreleased port of Quake to Gameboy Advance.

Large franchises with many different modes of gameplay and style really benefit the most in terms of a pure Demake I'd say, for it to be worth it, a Demake has to be returning a game to an earlier stage of the franchise it's a part of.

I like demakes when they are made with enough care that the game that inspired it is either exactly or approximately reproduced in a recognizable form. The MM7 and MM8 Demakes are very good examples and now, more recently, the MMX8 Demake, it is arguably better than the original game in most ways.

Going back in time a little, I remember the chinese remake of Final Fantasy VII for NES, translated into english not too long ago. Did you know it, boss?

This is pretty cool, especially with the patch that approximates the graphics to the original. The only wrinkle is that (I think) it only covers the first disc.

That looks a million times more playable than the actual FFVII.

I wasn't aware of the RE0 demake until seeing this. That's actually so cool. I love the style of RE1-3 so much, so I'll have to check it out. It got me wondering if Code: Veronica could make a good demake as well.

What holds FF7 back the most are the ugly field models, IMO.
Interesting. What throws me off are the pre-rendered backgrounds. They look like they don't belong on the same universe as the characters.

That's true too, but it's not like 5th gen consoles could make convincing 3D on the scale needed by the areas the games wanted to depict. There is indeed a disconnect, but I feel it's even worse when the models are ugly.

Another little-known nes gem: the chinese Bio Hazard (aka Resident Evil), also translated into english a few years ago. In truth, the pretty shitty graphics put me off playing it.. ?‍♂️

If I remember right, someone was working on this to massively improve it, not only graphically but also adding missing items and areas of the mansion. No idea where that project stands at the moment, though.

Not actually a Demake, but I remember coming across an unfinished (barely started, actually) GBC port of Diablo 1. That could have worked.

Yeah I could see it working. Probably as something close to Shining Soul (I mean, Shining Soul 2 is basically cutesy Diablo in many ways).

Here's the thread regarding the RE Demake improvement, though I wouldn't get my hopes up considering the last post was in 2022:

Most of the time they're just there, but sometimes they're cool and/or far better than the original like Sonic Triple Trouble 16 Bit and Mega Man X8 Demake.

My entire life is me looking for demakes. I love that concept to death. Can’t get enough of them.

The demake that I always found very interesting is "Dead Rising Chop Till You Drop" for the wii. Capcom basically took RE 4 for the wii and modded it with Dead rising assets. They even transformed one of the bosses into a rescatable survivor who sells weapons like the buhonero. The majority of guns come from RE for example Frank has a Broken butterfly and they are very common too, because the kombat is exactly the one from RE 4 and I always laugh when I see what they did with the convicts battle. It's so goofy that it feels like a mobile game add XD
there's also new costumes like one of spencer from the 2009 Bionic commando and even one of Roll Caskett

I love demakes, at least when they are done with care and style.

I actually vaguely remember trying to rebuild Final Fantasy VII in rpgmaker2003 twenty years ago. I didn't get far and I'm not sure any files from that attempt survive to this day, but it's interesting to note how long this idea has been around.

A complete FF7 Demake would be something I'd love to see. I also like RPG maker games that clearly emulate the style of an existing one and put their own spin, like Paradise Blue is a lovingly made FF1 ersatz.
