They were revolutionary in transitioning their respective franchises masterfully into 3D (not arguing they created either genres) they just played it too safe. They are 8-9/10 games imo. Diddy Kong Racing added a campaign filled with content, a hub world, mini games (okay Mario Kart 64 has battle arena too I guess), multiple vehicle types etc. Diddy Kong Racing was just more ambitious and well executed.
