One particularly amusing side effect of being born when and where I was was the fact that the SEGA GENESIS held monopoly of the gaming market... 99% of all kids I knew at the time either had that console or used to (you could pretty much trace everyone's console "lineage" as being NES --> Genesis ---> PS1). That meant that Genesis cartridges were common currency, and the "market" thrived on it.
I think I got to know about more classics through trading than renting... and that's saying something, because the renting culture was big at the time.
I got to play stuff like Sonic 2, Earthworm Jim and NBA JAM through trading, before commiting to a rental and then to buying the damn things. It was quite an interesting experience, almost a precursor to the whole "timed demos" that they are so keen about these days.
I also remember how my dad got so tired of me trading our copy of International Super Star Soccer Deluxe that he bought his own and kept under lock and key XD
I was eventually told to just keep the many games I had traded back and forth because their owners had moved on to other things, but it was great while it lasted (not in the least because my school had started to crack down on "outside distractions" and confiscated these on-sight).
Did you ever trade games yourself?
