One particularly amusing side effect of being born when and where I was was the fact that the SEGA GENESIS held monopoly of the gaming market... 99% of all kids I knew at the time either had that console or used to (you could pretty much trace everyone's console "lineage" as being NES --> Genesis ---> PS1). That meant that Genesis cartridges were common currency, and the "market" thrived on it.

I think I got to know about more classics through trading than renting... and that's saying something, because the renting culture was big at the time.

I got to play stuff like Sonic 2, Earthworm Jim and NBA JAM through trading, before commiting to a rental and then to buying the damn things. It was quite an interesting experience, almost a precursor to the whole "timed demos" that they are so keen about these days.

I also remember how my dad got so tired of me trading our copy of International Super Star Soccer Deluxe that he bought his own and kept under lock and key XD

I was eventually told to just keep the many games I had traded back and forth because their owners had moved on to other things, but it was great while it lasted (not in the least because my school had started to crack down on "outside distractions" and confiscated these on-sight).

Did you ever trade games yourself?

I used to borrow/trade games and even consoles with my close friends. That's how I got to play many Sega games while being a Nintendo kid. There was also the selling back used games to the store for credit that started becoming common place in the late 90s, but I only did that for games I absolutely hated. I generally preferred to hold on to games and collect them.

Ah interesting, I've always wanted to trade games with my classmates
But in the end, I didn't managed to trade a single game (I have trust issues)

Oh I wouldn't trade with random classmates. But in the 90's being a nerd was a thing that made you a target for ridicule. Those who shared the stigma of being nerds bonded together like brothers. I never had a brother and some of my close friends in my childhood are like the brothers I never had. I still keep in touch with some of them to this day.

Yeah that's true...unfortunately random or not, I still can't trust them easily
But I see what you mean, you have such a great friends

I mean, its not like it is blind trust. I'm talking about trading, not giving away stuff. There's collateral.

Having said that, I would also let friends borrow stuff that I had no interest in playing with anymore. Once they prove themselves trustworthy there's really no reason to not do so. The value of used games wasn't quite what it is now. Used games were worth 10-20 dollars at most. NES games you were lucky to get 5 dollars for them.

My parents would treat me like an adult from a young age. They let me manage my own stuff. If I lose it it is my own fault.

In viña in galeria plenocentro a long time ago there was an Argentina dude I didn't knew his name but I called him Che. That guy had the rule that I trade him two games and he trade me one. I remember getting a lot of games for example the complete edition of mafia 2 on 360

At $50 a pop? Pretty justifiable paranoia.
Yeah lol, it do be like that sometimes

That's an amazing parents you got! (my bad if it's not for you)
But in the end I guess it depends, like Waffles said I'm probably just a bit paranoid
And fortunately I don't have stuff I want to trade anymore so

Your way is probably the smart way to go in life. I was just blessed with awesome friends.

My trading stories are sadly not all that fun. I was gonna share a few, but nearly all of them ended on a downer note. 😅

Aww, I'm sorry to hear that.

If it makes you feel any better, there's an entire subculture of people sharing horror stories of the sort, my favorites being those involving N64 Transfer Packs and Rumble Packs.

I once traded a couple of my TMNT action figures for my friend's copy of Super Mario Bros. 3 when we were in elementary school.

I still cant believe he agreed to it

That reminds me of the kids who would try to rip off other kids trading their Shivan Dragons for Black Lotuses. Don't be that guy. ::unhappy

Oh no, he is the one who offered the trade. It was his idea.
I guess he had played it enough and was tired of it? But I definitely got the better deal.

Ah I guess that is fair. The monetary value of an NES game was nearly nil back in those days anyways, so I wouldn't classify it as a rip off from a dollars and cents perspective.

Full-on trades? No that wasn't a common thing in my childhood. I think I only traded games a few games when I was in elementary school. Borrowing games however was decently common.

I do think I mostly won out on my few trades as a kid. I think I traded my Quest 64 for Bomberman Hero, and my Asteroids/Pong/Yars' Revenge collection on GBA for a classmate's copy of the Sega Smash Pack on GBA.

Traded a lot of games with my friends.

Once I borrowed Yoshi's Island from a friend. I tried it at his place, then borrowed it, and thought the game didn't look as good at my place, it felt slower.

I told him that the next day, he was like " oh yeah my Super Nintendo is modded, it can run at 60 hz".

Me : "what the fudge is 60 hz" ?

Him : "Ok here's my console, see that red switch on the front ? Take it home and have fun with it".

Brought it home. The switch allowed to go from 50 Hz to 60 Hz. I kept doing it for 3 hours because I was baffled at the difference.
Then I tried and finish all my games I already finished a thousand times. TMNT 4 60 hz ? Hell yeah.

Thankfully he didn't play Super Nintendo anymore, and ended up giving it to me. I remembered trading him a couple years earlier Chrono Trigger (japanese version but still) for a VHS of Street Fighter and Fatal Fury movie, and Bubsy, and I thought that modded Super Nintendo was probably his way of making amends because he knew in his heart he wronged me with the initial trade.

He's also the guy that lended me Urotsukidoji, the legendary VHS everyone was trading to one another at school.

Nice fellow.

Isn't that a ecchi film? Naughty! ::eyebrows

I heard the "naughty " in Bayonetta voice. ::lol

Yeah back then we didn't have internet, so it was quite something. We didn't know about tent ackles then.

Still, I borrowed it for the 2D titties, got mind blown by the art style, psychic powers and demonic lore.

He lended you WHAT!? I wish my friends were as cool as yours!

Yes, that was a cool friend ! We also played SF 2 and Alpha 3 a lot. But the Urotsukidoji VHS was peak friendship.

I'm still processing the fact that you're more focused on the naughty vhs than on the free 60Hz Super Nintendo.

Never seen it, but the one that made it through my friends circle was La Blue Girl. Nothing redeeming about that one, just pure filth.

Oh yeah and the 60 hz thing. Doesn't that just turn every game into a Street Fighter Turbo version of itself? Not as cool as anime tiddies.

Oh yeah I heard about it, but never seen it. Turned out my interest in anime 2D girls is pretty limited. Still enjoyed Dragon Pink because it was pretty damn funny.
