The intro we see prior to the game menu screen sets the tone well.

Now i head to new game and create a warrior the game takes me to Tristram here would be my first time in the legendary town i walk around and approach ogden and the guy informs me that at edge of town has been desecrated , i walk up to the church and spot a man in a pool of his own blood Despite this the man could speak telling me a "butcher" did this to him after the archbishop lead the townsfolk into the church this Lazarus lead them into a trap! I promise to avenge the poor townsfolk and look towards the church and the eerie red light coming from it there is something horrible in there and I'm about to find out what it is entering the place you can sense that the sanctity of this place has been fouled and it won't take long to encounter my first demon although I'm ill equipped with a short sword and a shield being my only equipment the demons prove rather weak as long as they don't come in large numbers despite this i have to be careful to not take damage as currently i cant afford many potions with careful albeit sometimes rash demeanor i
Clearing the second floor i come across a room in the center of the floor what's there i wonder? Talking with the townsfolk this butcher seems to love hoarding corpses i could see this from the outside for now i will search for more enemies to kill when I'm confident i open the door a- AGHHH FRESH MEAT and I'm dead three times in a row , i go up to town again and buy more potions and after a bloody fight i beat scary butcher completing the first ever quest in diablo games and slaying the monster that terrified kids back in 97

Me in the butcher room the sight alone is gross the floor must be slippery due to all this blood and the smell

Soon Im told of the water supply of the town getting poisoned so i seek out a way to solve this stumbling upon a dark passage in the cathedral I'm attacked by a group of fallen ones they are no match for me with the butcher cleaver a weapon so strong that i would use it for the next few floors i found it quite amusing how a weapon forged in hell and used by a hell spawn is now used to slay and push back against the evils of hell itself using the cleaver i annihilate any demon i encounter and soon the water supply is cleaned of the foul demon essence with usable water back to the town we breath a sigh of relief the following morning i approach Ogden the innkeeper just to tell me his sign was stolen by demons i venture once more into the eerie lighted church heading to level 3 and 4 fighting more and more goatmen these are tough enemies way more than whatever i came across up until now but nothing stands before the cleaver mowing down demons of both the 3rd and 4th floor i find a small demon who can actually talk! He tells me to kill "big uglies" and find the sign of ogden inn and give it to him i do so the sign is hidden in a chest surrounded by large demons they don't stand a chance against the cleaver with the sign in hand i walk back to the small demon giving it to him he immediately turns against us and charges along with a large pack of his brothers right at me im surrounded by these small demons despite the numbers disadvantage they prove too weak and all get cut down by the cleaver their blood paves the way for floor number 5 here we enter the "catacombs"

With the smell of death surrounding me i rush towards the nearest door just the cleaver requires the usage of both hands meaning i can't use a shield drastically reducing my ability to parry attacks thus i have to carefully dispose of enemies by luring small groups onto corners and choke points like doors creating killing zones with this i scale the catacombs and soon come across a tome about the armor of arkaine a great man who fought demons long ago his armor as said by the tome and the people of town could be tip the scales in my favor especially against the horned enemies who charge at me dealing immense damage getting the armor however is tricky needing 3 blood stones to be placed in a small altar each stone protected demons using the door choke point strategy i crush them and acquire the armor.

Fighting a large group of demons isn't very wise as it can get you surrounded easily.

Heading deeper i stumble upon a tome that mentions "the chamber of bones" ohh what a spooky name i descend further down into the caves where it's hot down there and have to fight a deadly battle in the open against charging demons , demons that wield light i find a tome that i can't make out what it says bringing it to the witch adria she tells me of giant black mushroom i do the mushroom quest granting me +3 to all stats in the caves i would come across a stronger piece of armor replacing arkaine armor that served me pretty well up until this point.

Combating a succubus a ranged enemy that's difficult to fight in the open as the warrior so your best strategy is to corner them.

In combat 2

in the chamber of bones getting so much booty

in the caves the town Smith tells me of an anvil called "anvil of fury" if i get him this anvil he would craft me a weapon like no other along with another quest about a mystical heavenly rock setting out to find both the path is filled with dangerous lightning wielding demons and massive groups of demons all make for a very tough opponents after much struggle i manage to acquire both presenting them to griswold the Smith he crafts me a sword called griswold edge this sword will become my main weapon from now on with a great damage and knock back granting me ability to crowd control.

Following the difficult situation that was the caves i finally descend into the final row of levels...this part of the labyrinth is literally hell and a huge number of succubuses make life pretty difficult for a pure melee warrior like me i eventually get a bow but still the result of using isn't as great especially considering i have to get rid of the shield reducing my armor and ability to parry attacks still with enough patience and clever maneuvering i stab and slash the many succubuses to death soon encountering a black knight that for some reason isn't attacking me he claims he was once a hero of this land turned into this monstrosity due to the king's curse asking me to rid him of this curse using a golden elixir following pepin the healer advice to NOT drink the golden elixir if i find it i descend even deeper into this hell maze I'm getting close to the source of this evil i know it! i get the golden elixir and bring it to the hero he thanks me and gives me his helmet this helmet of his grants great power.

With the helmet of this great hero worn i go down one last floor just to be flooded by massive waves of succubus fire and various demons this floor would require utmost skill and patience to clear which at this point i have accumulated still despite all the powerful items i have the enemy proves worthwhile using the bow of heaven i manage to defeat many hell spawns i then find a staff that belongs to archbishop Lazarus bringing it to Cain the elder he discovers the sort of darkness that claimed Lazarus urging us to find the bishop as he had kidnapped the prince prior to this i find a red portal opened to Lazarus lair entering it we see the only FMV cutscene in the game showing us the still red lighted church and Lazarus standing in front of an altar as his eyes turn red we gotta hurry! Lazarus has surrounded himself with many many succubuses so it's going to be a challenge we need activate 2 panels to open the path to face Lazarus baiting the succubuses into the corners i eventually clear the path and when done with the panel activation get instantly transported to face Lazarus he urges me to abondon my foolish quest as I'm too late to save the boy and i will soon join him he says this while a boy sacrificed on an altar stands between me and him poor lifeless boy is drowned in blood the fool is soon cornered i put an end to this traitor miserable life with Lazarus defeated i travel back to town telling cain of what happened he says the boy i saw isn't the prince bringing a slight relief still the prince is in danger and we must find him!

in combat 3

Now i enter the 16th the last floor of the labyrinth im taken to floor 16 and immediately overwhelmed by diablo last remaining servants quickly retreating to town i prepare well and dispose of them systematically the lord of terror isn't faced so directly i need to pull few levers to face him upon doing so his place is revealed surrounded by an large group of followers i take care of those first i think the game brings me these enemies and after killing them all diablo will pop up I'm wrong as he speeds away at the top edge of my screen for the first time ever i sight diablo in his original appearance.

He starts casting a spell that does heavy damage to me luckily i bought potions that fully heal me i use many of them knowing now i have to kill him fast otherwise my supply of potions will run dry i get close to him just to get knocked back still i charge with all the righteous fury of humanity using griswold edge i eventually overcome the great demon I'm so relieved seeing him finally crumble to the ground while i expected a much more difficult fight he still proved to be quite the enemy.

I like this!

Sadly, Diablo is a franchise I could never get into. I played the first one when my toaster wasn't able to run much of anything else and left it fairly quickly. Then I tried the PS1 version and it was more of the same. It pains me being unable to connect with a game that SHOULD be my go-to by every conceivable metric.

Oh i had to limit the thread to just the narrated journey instead of breaking the game down mechanically...sigh...i gotta join the writers guild man if i want to fully write down the whole thing in one go anyway here is what i had to trim

It's 1997 the gaming landscape is going strong with resident evil having dropped just earlier in 96 along with red alert and WarCraft 2 beyond the dark portal followed by a game that will gain massive popularity soon a game that deviated from the usual turn based combat system RPG games had a game that stirred controversies like a demon possessing your computer of course I'm talking about the legendary title "Diablo" with this title blizzard sat foot on the RPG shores for the first time and despite this being their first try they would come up with something that would be considered ground breaking at the time.

Diablo 1 is an RPG game released on 31 December 1996 it revolves around a town called tristram and the evil that lies below the town it's this evil that we go after uncovering more and more information about it along the way what made diablo 1 sucessful? Well let's find out

I boot up the game to be greeted by an intro featuring a sword plunged into a hill the intro speaks of horror to me an abandoned town with the lifeless bodies of the residents all over the place we see a soldier a hero investigating a home with all this happening the camera keep zooming closer and closer into the sword with the final scene of this build up featuring a grave suddenly opening strange red eyes in the dark are seen and what seems to be the hand of a prisoner in a dark dungeon soon after strange strong light emits from the sword the hero is seen surprised and caught off guard by the many monsters in the shots following this we see a goat man a strange horned monster and a shot of the long cluster phobic catacombs ending with a terrifying scream of the lord if terror himself diablo... What's this intro supposed to mean? What's the sword supposed to represent? Is the town tristram? One thing i like about this intro is it captures the vibes and the artstyle of the game so well showcasing the horrible monsters we will face and the scary nature of the labyrinth setting a pretty grim tone for the game.

Gameplay: Diablo gameplay loop is pretty straightforward if i have to sum it upon 2 word it would be "kill demons" then "kill demons till you find big bad demon and kill big bad demon" this is the most ounga bunga description of diablo , going down to the nitty gritty of things the game plays revolves around the town of tristram and it's residents some provide helpful info about stuff others serve more gameplay purposes like griswold the blacksmith and pepin the healer who you can buy potions from , the game has 3 classes the warrior , the rouge , the mage , warrior is more tank focused , rouge is ranged and dexterity focused i think and mage is magic focused the warrior thanks to his role in the story overshadow the 2 other characters , ok so basically what you do is speak to people get equipment fight demons get money/loot sell loot get better weapons finish quests means get reward at one point you will have too much in your inventory so you have to sell stuff it's a MUST playing Diablo 2 before 1 man the gameplay is such a downgrade gold takes up inventory space and the item pool is so limited , one detail i admire so much however is enemies don't respawn we need this in diablo 2 RIGHT NOW , oh and you can't run that's why melee struggles against ranged enemies , also worth mentioning is combat is real time aka action based not turn based man playing all these turn based RPGs makes you forget why everyone wanted to jump on the real time stuff it's just too good and too appealing to the casuals instead of having to go through battle transation and what not you get to instantly fight no turns no delays the game pacing isn't interrupted the exploration is paired nicely with combat so you never feel annoyed by fighting while exploring ALSO you get 5 points of stats each new level instead of 6

Screenshot_20250507_015312_com.epsxe.ePSXe.jpg

I had way too much gold in my inventory turns out you can throw things on the ground and it never disappears.

Graphics: alright you know how this is back then it looked marvelous does it still? Well yeah the artstyle blizzard went for is top notch Diablo 1 and 2 had this dark grim artstyle with much gore when i entered the church i found pools of blood and what seems to be flesh on the ground i kept wondering who is this blood for? What did happen here? Also one can't help but admire the beautiful looking armor of arkaine.

Sound/music: pretty great first you can say the town of tristram theme or song is famous it's a piece of RPG musical history what i love about the song is it provides you both with warm feelings and safety but also switches to more sinister vibes like "yeah don't feel too safe there is something horrible going on" the music for each place becomes more and more deranged combined with constantly haunting screams i want you to focus especially on these screams as the cathedral screams are super loud and sound like result of a torture mind you ogden says "inhumane screams echo at night" when speaking of the cathedral , in the cave levels there is a literal crying of a child and what seems to be a boy in constant pain Idk if it's intentional but great foreshadowing blizzard , monster sounds are also top notch the fallen death sounds stuck with me the sound they make is so different from the one in 2 the diablo 2 fallen when killed scream in pain like you stabbed them the diablo 1 fallen scream like you have driven an axe into their head splitting it in half , with the soundtrack and monster sound design the atmosphere is hostile and constantly puts you on edge.

Story: i know the game story before playing it the town of tristram has a really dark secret but look if i try to explain diablo lore i would look like I'm making up a story using meth and other drugs crazy stuff man...

Great game but people dismiss the second game dark atmosphere for the first game much superior atmosphere i get D1 is good but come on man the second game captures the same vibes pretty well.

Diablo 1 is undeniably the best Diablo game; I didn't like 2 or any of the others as much.
The feeling when you delve deeper into hell is a unique experience.
I would say 2 is a massive and i mean really MASSIVE improvement gameplay wise even story wise you get to run around places instead of 1 dungeon i understand the feeling of going deeper and deeper into a labyrinth filled with unholy dangers but i cant help but sense that some people have a bit of a bias regarding 1 i seen claims like "Diablo 2 never captured the horror vibes of the first game" and i would love to direct these people to act 1 of Diablo 2 I'm a bit biased myself as diablo 2 is my first RPG and admittedly my first playthrough was a bit of me being a total moron

Whats wrong with the game that makes you quit it? Sheeet Diablo is a must play to get the gamer certificate.

Never played Diablo 1 but did get balls deep into Diablo 2 so this will be my first time seeing much of the first game.
Same this was my first time playing Diablo 1 and it turned out pretty fun

Congrats bro I've never finished Diablo myself. Got pretty deep with a mage but hit a wall and lost patience at some point and just watched the ending in a playthrough.

My main issue with the Diablo likes is the skinner box nature of the gameplay loop, that got somewhat worse in the next episodes, and all the parallel market that would also inspire WOW. That's the first time I remember at the time that I thinked they were designing the game specifically for people to get hooked like gambling machines.

And it worked on me to an extend. I thought the "Fresh Meat!" Butcher line was awesome, but then I got more interested to learn the Tristram song with a guitar tab, and only got to revisit the game a few years later, but still couldnt see through the end.

You've got Hellfire DLC on PSX? Maybe check to install Win98 on DosBOX pure I'm sure there's a lot of games you'd love there. I was thinking about installing Total Annihilation Kingdom next. And Starcraft / Broodwar.

Yes, I know Diablo 2 is a big improvement over everything else, but the atmosphere of 1 is unmatched. The story of King Leoric and his son being used as a host to Diablo is stuff from nightmares. When you kill Diablo, the boy appears; it's an atmosphere like no other. It sure left an impact on me; I played it when I was 15 years old, and it was my first game in the series, so maybe I'm a bit biased, but nostalgia apart, while D2 did everything better, the story was not as dark as D1.

Well, I really liked this!

There used to be this huge community based around Diablo I/II, I can't seem to find the main site I used to hang out on (maybe it's gone) but they had articles and forums and tons of creative work.

One of my favorite things were these journals, kinda like what you did here, which were stories where people posted images and basically narrated a playthrough with a character. There was one about "The General", by a writer committed to winning with a pure minion Necromancer that entertained the hell out of me; basically guaranteed that was exactly how I wanted to play the game from that day onward.

(Sorry for how vague this sounds, it's been over twenty years and my memory is *terrible*).

The gameplay loop can and will at points feel like gambling especially the traders like wirt and gheed in Diablo 2 who present you with unknown items and you have to spend money to see what you get if it's right MASSIVE DOPAMINE hit if not you can feel scammed i know I'm something of a diablo fan myself and on my latest diablo 2 playthrough i wasted lots of money buying rings from gheed and the likes of him i got some pretty great rings but at what cost :loldog

Nah i didnt play hellfire but might do sometime later from what i heard its greatly disliked by blizzard themselves despite them asking the studio that made it to well... Make it

Yes the ending should have been a huge reveal but at that point i already knew the story but yes the story does make you hate the demons and diablo for how terrible they are you never feel bad for slaying no matter how many of them as they deserve it and deserve worse seeing how they take delight in torturing humans i mean can you draw in your head how wirt lost his leg exactly? Did they slowly chop it? Or swiftly? With what?... I would love for a diablo 1 remake in first person something of a horror themed game be absolutely AWESOME

Couple more images to delight you with my documented playthrough

Engaging hell horrors a very fast very high damage monster i noticed they loved to surround me idk if they have unique AI behavior but they constantly would reposition themselves to attack me from multiple directions do notice the red effect is caused by my sword and it's knockback ability.
