with the rise of the digital age our standards for media has also risen and i think that should apply to movies too on a more technical level. this thread is to talk about some ideas youd like to see in this regard, if any. for example i think a rather simple one that i believe every film would benefit from is being able to adjust individual audio levels like you can in games, voices music sound effects should all be on their own channels that you can raise and lower. movie creators should just get off their high horse of choosing how you experience their films and really just take a note from video games to add some customizability to their films just give us audio sliders. that isnt too drastic of a difference from the "original intent"

for a more idealistic and less grounded one, i remember once reading an interview with i believe it was the producer yukio nishimoto around 2020 who talked about the advancement of cgi in animation. he was speaking about how he believes sometime in the future itll get so good that itd be completely indistinguishable from hand drawn animation and while that might make hand drawn a niche (like it had with traditional animation vs digital) one of the benefits to full cgi anime being the standard could be the sheer customization of it. like a game, you could install underwear patches to change the heroines clothes throughout the series for example. in this hypothetical world thered probably be cosmetic dlcs being sold for your favorite anime for you to enjoy your rewatches with. user created content like mods, modding out certain characters replacing them with characters from other franchises, what-have-you. its a bit extreme of a case and a bit hard to imagine computer generation excelling at perfectly creating the human imperfections of hand drawn animation but its still something to think about. any ideas youd like to see? any predictions on the effect of tech and ai and such has with films and television? any opinions on how user interactivity in the medium could potentially devalue art? doompost about the greed of the industry? discuss

It's to each their own but I'd rather films remain a tailored experience created by (hopefully) an auteur than be something that can be customised by the viewer. Personally, I think it devalues the artistry of both films and games (as the interactive artform).

I don't know if I'm following exactly what's being asked here, but I don't think I want other peoples stories to be altered to my whims like a bored monarch threatening a jester. I'm pretty happy reading/watching what other folks have to say, otherwise what's the point, right?

I don't think people would really want to control movies, because after a while, seeing something like Aliens but it's Seinfeld characters instead would get very old.

i want to customize every movie to be a like those 10 minutes youtube recap videos, with minecraft gameplay on the side.

I'm eagerly awaiting for a Mario movie (2023) mod where they replace the english voices for more faithful ones and the 80's tracks for the intended Mario songs.

And yeah I loved that movie and still do, stop gaslighting me that no one cared for it

On the one hand, a lot of people have poor art education and don't know better than the original filmmaker as to what should be done with their films. Test audiences tend to be a bunch of whiny crybabies who can't understand that unhappy and bittersweet endings are sometimes the right thing for a film and their demands for mommy to make it all better aren't worth fulfilling.

On the other hand, there are some directors that either make a few too many mistakes or aren't even competent to begin with. I don't care how good the score is for a Christopher Nolan film; if I can't hear the dialogue because Nolan's idiotic sound direction drowned it out once again, it sucks. Likewise, It's safe to say that Star Wars: The Despecialized Edition is the best version of of the original trilogy that exists now thanks to George Lucas' thoughtless destruction of the original prints so he could replace it with some really bad edits.

Furthermore, there are some completely bad films that won't be at all good until they enter the public domain and someone takes the time to make them worthwhile. It's too bad we can't have the video equivalent of rom hacking to get us a bit closer to that in the meantime.

They are too busy busting their asses trying to come up with ways to prevent you copying stuff you watch to concider even something as simple as split audio tracks. Also most people who wanna just watch a movie aint got no time to tinker with anything like that, so it'll never be a consumer targeted thing, the only way for something like that to thrive is if they allow derivative works ("remixes"), so that tinkerers can tinker and share their cool stuff with the rest of us lazy bums, but that's never gonna happen. CGI matching hand drawn or real life is tangential to all that, CGI is already here and now and marketable, all they need to do is give you the source material so you can modify it and render your own "cut". We'll have to wait for a copyleft revolution to knock some sense into the industry before such nice things can become a thing.

TLDR
split audio tracks
in our eyes - minor convenience, duh
in their eyes - omg, it gonna make it easier for the evil fans to make and redistribute high quality dubs, and harder to fingerprint em for auto DMCA strikes, reeeeeeeeeee

The audio idea sounds more like an accessibility issue than a customization one, which brings up the interesting question of "should artists/creators be compelled to make their work accessible?"

And all of this will be used to shitpost and meme by the LCD. There's already enough of that on the internet; I'm not interested in that kind of culture for film or animation. Besides, art is often an expression of the self. I want to see the world through the creator's eyes, not through some dumbass who thinks putting Shrek in a Studio Ghibli film is funny

Hmm, I could write a dissertation on this idea, but let's just keep it shorter and say it's polar opposite of my kind of thing. x) People are always gonna fuck with stuff and that's fine, but the idea of them being able to do it with a couple clicks is just... eww. I think I could tolerate it if it became kind of it's own thing, far away from actual filmmaking, but I will always champion someone's (well, a lot of people's, films and such aren't done by one person) artistic vision over the audience's personal preference and ideas.

The guy on the stage is GOD, and all of you from audience should just shut up never dare to repeat his heavenly acts of pure genious and live your pathetic mudane lives in silence until you die. Those kids in particular, who go home and dare to reenact the holy play, HATE THEIR GUTS!

Those kids can always make their own play instead of, you know, vandalizing someone else's. But that actually takes effort ::winkfelix

10/10 would slap my child for pretending he's Jedi again
