What are some of your favorite merchandise items related to video games? Do you like it because it was fun, functional, or really captured the experience/personality of the game in physical form?

I recall the PlayStation /E3 area had some real interesting gems and one-offs, in terms of swag items only available at conventions and official merch/tie-ins usually only available in Japan. Perhaps the pre-internet times bred creativity because you had everyone competing for attention in the physical "real world," and publishers needed to spread things literally by hand and word of mouth to help generate buzz for a game. These were the days that also saw the deluxe game box items of Working Designs, too.

Off the top of my head, I like Monster Hunter and Dragon Quest stuff in particular. Especially the "replica" type stuff and household items. I have a lot of weird DQ items around the house, from towels to a headband for when you wash your face and even ponytail bands (they kinda suck unfortunately lol but cool to have a metal slime in your hair I guess).

I was inspired to ask because I received this Felvidek OST cassette in the mail from Czechia and it sparked much joy. I'm not even an analogue audio nut or anything (had to fish out the cassette player from a drawer and it sounds like shit unless I set the connector in the audio jack just so lol) but it's just fun to see something like this and be reminded of a great game experience, almost like a memento from an old friend to remind you of a happy time.

I miss when they used to hand out feelies with the games, now its just deluxe pre-order ultimate backer collector's yada yada edition exclusive.

Infocom was the king at giving out cool stuff with game purchases.

Oh hell yeah, that's what I'm talking about. PC game companies were no slouch when it came to the deluxe packaging! I love the official in-world maps, too. That stuff always added so much to the experience.

I just now caught the tea bag in the Hitchhiker set lmaooo

Here's my chcobo perpetual calendar. The recent Chocobo Everybuddy Mysterious Dungeon marketing and merch campaign was the best I've seen in years from a publisher. This lil guy was real useful until my asshole cat knocked the date number blocks under something somewhere. Still can't find em ...

I dunno why (other than gluttony), but I always liked the concept of edible game merch. Even if it's just an energy drink done up as a magical healing potion, or a cheap insta-curry "made with" a pretend antimicrobial / zombification-averting herb? I like those. I want to get at least one of 'em some day.

Final Fantasy 12 potion bottles + energy drink (I'd give some fingers for one of these >_>)

Resident Evil / Biohazard (technically) Green Herb curry looks like The Exorcist vomit

Even these babies, if not from a specific game, are still cool in my book. Mana Energy Potion shots!

And if I ever won a windfall (lottery, inheritance, et cetera), I'd go to Luida's Tavern in Japan and enjoy some of Dragon-Quest-tastic goodies like these. Or the DQ Island amusement park, and enjoy the food at the restaurant there. And probably bring a hired translator with me wherever I went in Japan, 'cause I can't speak Japanese other than some anime war cries!

While I am the collector of precious stones, and the likes . . . I MUST decree.. A Jack Frost or Mothman plush would decorate the stack of gemstones OH so well. Like a prince sitting on it's throne! PERHAPS Someday I'll acquire one.

(OOC: I have like. a fossil collection and I could actually have one of the SMT Plushes stand on it like a guard.. who knows!)

Does McDonald's Happy Meal count? If it does then this Mario Kart 8 toy, it's what introduced me to Mario Kart series since it looked really interesting to me
I sure hope so, I remember having this little spud from a garage sale, as a little spud. I miss 'im, I had the little Goomba for years upon years.

The humble foot-soilder of the Koopa King! A NOBLE beast and steadfast in his ways! He looks at his oncoming Red-Capped rival with pure valor & duty in his eyes! I feeleth thee, that perhaps this critter will end up in your life again! Maybe on a day where all the planets align? That's what I shall hope for -Hoot!

I'm not sure if pre-order/special edition items count as merch but the image I found for this came off an out of stock Amazon listing from SCEA so I assume it was available for purchase to the public at some point, but I've been using this the inFamous 2 sling bag since the game came out in 2011 and mine is a bit scuffed up but it's held up very well in 14 years of service.

I'm also a big fan of art books, I picked up all of the Final Fantasy Ultimania Archive books among a few others from Book Depository when that website announced it was shutting down a couple of years back, and I also got myself a copy of Dragon Quest Illustrations shortly after Akira Toriyama's passing.

Hmmm... What should I post from my treasure trove today?
I always feel bad using these, some of faves are themed controller and OST CDs although publisher rarely release those these days.

OH MY HELLISH HEAVENS... The joyful frost is so whimsical in nature! The best guardian spirit one could procure!

How could I forget to mention Punching Puppet Ghaleon??

I had one back when I pre-ordered Eternal Blue at age 11 or whatever, and was devastated when my mom donated it along with all my stuffed toys (v traumatic lol). To this day I regularly consider re-purchasing it from eBay just to finally right that terrible wrong that was done.

I wasn't a big fan of the Ultimania books. I was expecting more behind-the-scenes trivia/interviews/concept art, especially since outlets like Did You Know Gaming have really upped the ante on obscure gaming history for dweebs like me, but Ulti felt like a pretty by-the-numbers artbook for the coffee table. In all honesty I'd rather flip through old FF strategy guides. Still fun to flip through but I ended up giving my copy (7-8-9) to my brother.

Yeah I remember the FFX one was pretty good for background on Spira (had a history timeline, background of Yevon organization and the different peoples, character bits, etc) and had concept art from early iterations of the game, but the recent ones like the FFVII Remake ultimania seemed more like the coffee table art book type of Ultimania that you mention. Nothing wrong with that of course, it's just a little disappointing if you want to dive deeper into the game world and characters.

Yeah, definitely a fine coffee table book. I just went in with different expectations. I might get that volume just for X if thats the case. It has my second fav lore in the series (indeed its my second fav FF)

Someone actually translated and posted a good chunk of the FFX Ultimania to GameFAQs many moons ago. It looks like the original thread is sadly lost, but someone archived it here if you're interested:

The sections on Yevon and Pyreflies, etc are probably the most interesting if uou're a FFX lore nerd.
