when i was still in school i used to bring in games on a flashdrive to play in my computer class, and i liked to find really weird and cool freeware games to do this with, generally small ones that wouldn't take up all my flashdrive space. this lead to me having an affinity for freeware games, and im curious, what freeware games do you folks like?

i'll start with one of my favorites, Within A Deep Forest by Nifflas. Nifflas, or Niklas Nygren, is a dev that i really like, he's made a lot of pretty cool games, he's probably most well known for Uurnog Uurnlimited, Knytt Underground and NightSky these days, but back in the day he used to make a ton of freeware stuff. my personal favorite of his early work is Within A Deep Forest, it's a sort of metroidvania 2D platformer where you play as a bouncy ball. you can get different materials to swap between, which gives your ball unique properties and abilities, stuff like higher jumps or being able to pass through lasers. it's a really fun time, and has some excellent music. i played this a TON back in the day, especially in middle school, it's really great.

Every game is freeware if you know where to look.
bring me that booty.jpg

On a more serious note, there are quite a few of them out there. I recommended Shoujo Attack in the PC recommendation thread. Steam and GOG have freeware sections which mostly consist of demos and MMOs but you can find some gems in there like OpenTTD or Dink Smallwood. I have recently discovered this and this. I have yet to give them a thorough playthrough so I can't comment on their quality just yet but they look very promising.

Also, This thread would be incomplete without the mention of M.U.G.E.N and OpenBOR. If you're into fighting games and side-scrolling beat'em ups you can't go wrong with those.

An old run-and-gun DOS game called Abuse. It received ports to modern computers too.

Super Smash Flash and Super Smash Flash 2 were peak.

Super Tux Kart, really enjoyed those multi-layered tracks.
Battle for Wesnoth, a great Turn based strategy game, I loved the artwork also.
Cataclysm dark days ahead, Very customizable Roguelike.

Epic Battle Fantasy 3 was one of my first RPGs and what gave me a love for them. Some of the jokes haven't aged well at all, but it's still a good RPG.

The next installment is probably the best in the series imo (But it isn't free on Steam)
Edit: I forgot to mention Creatures of Aether. It's inspired by Triple Triad. (It's been abandoned by the devs, but it's still fun)

I used to hunt for new stuff on Game Hippo and AcidPlay so I have a ton, but the one that leaps out at me is Gunz The Duel
OIP.jpg

It was an online Third Person Arena shooter that placed a heavy emphasis on style with a mix of guns and melee, think Devil May Cry, The Matrix, and Quake all in a blender. It's most famous for having a number of technical glitches, cancels, and exploits, called "K-Style" that greatly expanded the movement and attack options at a player's disposal and lead to a high skill ceiling and a load of gameplay depth. It had a degree of character customization and an in-game currency to buy clothes and weapon loadouts, feeling super ahead of its time in the early 2000s.

Flash games are a treasure trove of freeware goodness. We actually have a thread for them here.

One I found last year just browsing new releases on Steam: Planet Mort. It's on itch.io too. It's a pretty solid 3D platformer with some really cool music and atmosphere.
There's also a dev whose games I like called Scumhead, and a few of their games are freeware, too.
I recommend Lycanthorn II.

yall evidently have really good taste, always good to see people appreciating classics like mugen, cave story, yume nikki and knytt.

do you know if there's any way to play gtd these days? i really like that kind of technical stuff, and it seems like it'd be fun to mess around with.

i went and took a peek at scumhead's stuff, the one that stood out to me the most personally is moonlaw, i wanna give that a shot. i'll also check out lycanthorn ii, since it seems pretty cool.

oh yeah, ive definitely heard the name super tux kart before! it sounds pretty cool, next time i'm in a racing mood i think i'll give it a go.
I think Tyrian was peak freeware.

SkyRoads is also really good.
skyroads seems pretty nifty, i love early 3d stuff like that. i wonder if it works with modern windows still...

damn, abuse looks absolutely killer. (um... don't take that out of context.) the graphics look stellar though, i'll definitely need to look into it.

I will always mention this two games
Super Mario Crossover

and Mari0

really cool fan games of the Mario franchise that i use to play a lot as a kid and even today i play from time to time.
SSF2 is also really cool, but i am more into Brawl Mods, but is also worth the mention

Yup! There're fan servers like FreeStyleGunz and it's also got an upcoming Steam Rerelease. There's been a pretty big effort in recent years to bring it back.

C-Dogs and Meteor, both old top-down shooters I used to play a lot.
Stone Soup and Elona, both very good, but very different roguelikes.
Ring Racers, probably the most complex kart racer I've ever played.
Power Bomberman, massive Bomberman clone.
Space Station 13, overwhelmingly detailed multiplayer space life sim. Very fun once you get the hang of it.
OpenBOR has already been mentioned, but I'll specifically call out TMNT Rescue-Palooza
Little Fighter 2, classic beat-em-up.

Probably a lot others I'm forgetting.

Also want to shoutout OpenBOR, particularly Ultimate Double Dragon

A super in-depth fan remake of Super Double Dragon. It features an expanded roster of playable characters and enemies (with sprites made by the original Super Double Dragon artist), a MASSIVELY expanded arsenal of moves and attacks with style switching and high-quality custom sprite work, huge gameplay and combo depth, and a ton of new music and remixes. It's imo a must play for any Beat Em Up or Double Dragon fan.

That's just insane man! And it's from the original artist? What a dedication!

Props to all of them involved, amazing groups of people::bigboss

I have a folder with almost a hundred freeware games I've downloaded from itch.io but I haven't gone around to playing most of them. Here are some that I have.

I've only played this up to a bit after I got the yoyo but it looks like a fairly expansive 3d collectathon with more effort put into it than you'd expect for a joke like this.

This one's a bit well-known but it's a platformer where you explore a world made up of single-screen rooms which each have their own name, collecting upgrades. It's like VVVVVV.

Actually speaking of that game, the developer of it hosted a blog for about 2 years where he reviewed one freeware game every week, it might be worth checking out.

Super Mario Crossover
I have these two that are in a similar vein to that one but they're in game maker instead of flash.

Nitronic Rush (the spiritual predecessor to Distance)

Sonic Robo Blast 2, a great Sonic fangame

Super Smash Land
