Choro Q HG (aka, gadget racers) is the most bizarre racing game I've played.

I was expecting a silly little racer and I'm met with oddly realistic physics, deep customization where every piece matters and high difficulty. Is no Gran Turismo, but I certainly didn't expect this from super-deformed cars, hell, I had to get used to the manual transmission! Yet at the same time, it IS silly, cars can race underwater, or equip floats and race *over* water, or skies, or gliders, damage for crashing is inexistant, car parts matter a lot, but the body is purely aesthetic, you can drive a garbage dump or an sports car the same... What the fuck is this game?

I both love and hate that entire franchise.

I love the cell-shaded looks, the cartoony designs of the cars and the betting system that could set you ahead (or back!) considerably after each race... But it seems to have been put together by AI in spots. The handling, the difficulty, even the looks are inconsistent. And I think that it's the most broken game on the N64, itself no small feat.

Oh on my friends introduced me to this series a while ago, specifically Shin Combat Choro Q
Super fun game with some repeatability, alot of customization and SO many tanks.
Still need to checkout the main car games.

Tho from what i found when looking the game up a while ago is that Choro Q is a toy line, similar to Hotwheels or the like, but with lil chibi cars. They dont make games anymore and the last bunch were all mobile. But the games that spawned from it were all mostly real good.

I played Shin Combat first. A lot less bizarre, you expect a silly tank game and its pretty much that. A lot more forgiving, weapons are wacky, is not exactly realistic. Which is why the cars one caught me so off guard with the physics and difficulty.

Never heard of this, and always happy to find new games. I can see the toy design of the cars, and i have to say it is interesting.

How deep is this game?

Just quick race and done?

Can you customize the cars in any way?

There's a lot of customization you can do, though it varies from game to game somewhat, I imagine.

The most fun racing game I've ever played: I own them all since the debut on ps1 🤩

By the way: try ChoroQ Wonderful! :->

I've quite enjoyed my time with the sandbox ChoroQ on PS2.

I can never remember the name in PAL territories, but its got some great humor, and I'm a fan of racing games with some light rpg/progression elements.

Here in PAL regions, it was Penny Racers :->

Deeper than I expected. I'm barely starting, but we are talking engine, tires, chassis, gearbox, spoilers, all having an effect, plus purely cosmetic elements. As I said before, the body itself doesn't do anything except looks. Sports car and bus are exactly the same, so no aerodynamics either, despite the fact that spoilers give you a tiny boost of top speed. There's also wacky stuff like wings for gliding, skis for snow and ice and floats and propeller for water. There's license tests... LICENSE TESTS! to teach you to drive optimally. I can't describe the physics, they are realistic, but not really? is weird man... Races, you have races where you can use whatever you want, championships, races with part regulations... for many races you will want to customize and optimize for the type of track, mostly just the tires, because it makes a huge difference.

TL;DR
lots of customization.
Not quite to the level of a real simulation game, but there's some depth.
