howdy folks, ive been playing my n64 a LOT again lately. its a really cool console that i like a lot, and i kind of want to get more games for it. ive already got a small collection going, which can be seen here:

and i wanna get more ! i generally spring for cheaper games because my job doesnt pay well enough for me to be splurging on stuff like majoras mask. trust me, if i had the money i would already have that game, its one of my favorites of all time! i wanna try out new stuff too, one of my recent purchases was a copy of forsaken 64 for 10 bucks on ebay. i have zero clue what that game is like at all, i didnt look up any screenshots or gameplay, i wanna go into that completely blind. so now i ask, what weird, obscure, (preferably cheap, somewhere under 30 or 40 bucks) n64 games do you recommend?

you seem to want to play games instead of them just collecting dust, unlike most people that own an n64
Considering your financial situation - why no everdrive?

Also, considering the tiny library, there ain’t THAT many “hidden gems”
Might as well go for the sd card so you can access hacks + homebrew

i mean, everdrives are pretty pricey, are they not? plus, that's not nearly as fun. the cool part about having a small library, especially of games that arent the main nintendo ones, is that you come to appreciate games you wouldnt otherwise. i dont think i would have taken a ton of interest in a game like wipeout64 if it were just a game on a list i could pick from, but because its a physical cartridge sitting in my lineup, i'm way more likely to be like "sure, why not?" i have this issue with steam too, but this is way too big of a tangent to go into

I played these on PS1 so I don't know how good the N64 versions are but I liked them.
Nightmare Creatures ($20-30)
Spider-Man ($30-40)

Get into repo carts for the rare stuff if you don't wanna do the flashcart.

But also if you wanna dive in and collect the official stuff then definitely get Bomberman 64 like Eclipse14 said. Also Bomberman Hero usually goes for cheap.

Also Perfect Dark surprisingly goes for cheap??? It's common enough still in North America at least, but when I looked around you can find it for less than $20.

Is 40 dollars is considered cheap now for n64 gamea? I got out of retro game collecting in the early 2010s because i thought it was too expensive back then lol.
Rampage World Tour Is a lot of fun used to play it with my brother all the time average price on ebay seems to be about 25 dollars

Well, I was GOING to say "fuckin' Glover," but... apparently, you have that base covered :-p

Also, you have two copies of 1080?? You're off to a good start!

For my cheap recommendations (under $20):

Blast Corps
Command & Conquer
Extreme-G
Hexen (AWESOME 4-player co-op!)
World Driver Championship

Sports Games are usually pretty cheap, if you're into that sort of thing:

WCW / NWO Revenge (if you like wrasslin')
Major League Baseball w/ Ken Griffey Jr. (pretty fast-paced for baseball...)
NBA Hang Time (fun basketball game from the golden age of the NBA)
NFL Blitz (if you like foobaaaal...)
Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey (if you like the best damn sport ever invented...)
FIFA 64 / World Cup '98 (maybe the best sports sims on the console)

EDIT: Forgot to mention that most Star Wars games are pretty cheap! Racer, Rogue Squadron, and Shadows of the Empire come to mind. Of those three, I like the last one the best, as it has quite a bit of variety in its game modes, as well as digitized music from the films.

Fun Fact: Shadows of the Empire was my first N64 game! Bought it in early '97, brand new at Bigg's for... $84.99. Plus tax >..<

shitttt, totally forgot about blast corps!! thats one thats always been on my list, but ive never played it. and i love quake, so i'd be totally down to check out hexen. ive been lookin for more multiplayer stuff since me n my roommate like playing games together.

and yeah, i love 1080! the reason i have two copies is because i really wanted both a north american and japanese copy. little did i know, they both contain the EXACT same rom, there is zero difference between the two LOL

im no stranger to repro carts, i got a lot of gba ones as a kid because i got a monthly allowance of 12 bucks, and i couldnt afford any of the legit ones lol. so that aint off limits to me

i really wanna get the two bomberman games, i know i saw a listing of japanese bomberman hero for like, 10 bucks, which is a killer deal to me.

perfect dark could be a cool buy, but doesnt it need the expansion pak? unfortunately i dont have one, so i might need to skip out on that one :[

My all time favorite game for Nintendo 64 is Magical Tetris Challenge.
HELL yes, that one is absolutely on my radar!! i watched grayfruit play it and it seriously looks so fun, can't say i expected that from disney tetris but still!

You could look on AliExpress. I've seen some reproduction carts on sale there, so it might be a good option. If you plan on ordering off there, I'd check the seller's rating first to make sure if they're legit or not. If there's no rating, there's a chance they're a scam. Otherwise, there's eBay but the price on games will be higher.

I still believe a flashcart would have better value, and you can load up one or two games on it on a time if you're worried about getting overwhelmed with choice. But in the end, you gotta go with your heart.

Yeah, they're a couple hundred buckaroonies. But some consider that a small price to pay for what amounts to an entire platform's library that would cost several thousands at least and being able to play it realistically on true hardware.
But I agree with you. I feel like when you open a ROM list of 400 games...none of them are appealing.
The reason we grew attachments to games in the past is because we didn't have 400 to choose from all at once.

It's much better for one's gaming spirit to have limits, IMO.
Also check into sites like Etsy and eBay. There are nice looking N64 end-labels for sale on there you just cut out and stick on.

One could use a separate SD card with only the few games one is really interested in playing. Problem solved. You could also get the Joey 64 and a bootleg clone game cart and there you go very nearly the entire library. That would be near to the price of a flashcart though.

F-Zero is straddling the $30 threshold but it's one of my favorite games on the entire system

If you have an expansion pak, you need Quake 2. One of the best examples of the Expansion Pak being used to improve a game on the entire platform.

Otherwise, Star Wars: Episode 1 Racer is better than it has any right to be.

And, as people have said, it may be more expensive than you’d like, but look into the flash cart market. Not only will it allow you to “demo” games, but, with the expansion pak, it’s the killer app for that thing. Amazing fangames have been ported onto official hardware, using the extra ram to allow them to exist, and it has been some of the best times I’ve had with my console in the current day.

Also, Star Fox 64/Lylat Wars should be in your collection. It usually goes for under $40, and it’s one of the games I missed owning the most when I sold my console the first time. It’s a gem and you need it.

Yes, seconding Star Fox 64. Even if you've played the 3DS remake the original just has so much more personality. I know I'm biased since that's the version I grew up with but the stilted compressed voice acting is absolute kino.
