Self Explanatory, everybody has a character that when, be by progress in the game or by replaying it as an adult, you came to appreciate

I can think of 2 off the top of my head i'd consider breakout characters that i really expected to dislike with the first few interactions with them.
The first would be barret wallace from final fantasy 7, at the beginning of the game he came across to me as a "angry black man" stereotype but by the end of it i consider him to be arguably the best written character in 7, a father filled with rage and sorrow over the death of his family and friends, who even after so much time has passed hasn't forgotten how stained his hands are by the actions he's taken, he's probably my favorite character in final fantasy 7.

Sazh from 13 also falls into this category, unlike with barret i just expected him to be a wooden character like the rest of the cast but as the story goes on it becomes more obvious that he's the most realistic and in some ways noble of all the characters, he's not here to save the world, his only interest is to save his son, making him by far the most human character in the cast (most of the 13 cast sucks, if sazh wasn't in it i'd consider 13 irredeemable).

Others i'd say is, generally the entire cast of dragon quest 11 fits into this for differing reasons.

DAISY!
First i hate her because of her snazzy personality and kicking my ass in mario kart (idk why but always had a beef with Daisy CPU in mario kart wii)
Then a friend of mine stole rosalina from me in Mario Party soo i converted to daisy as it was the only princess available
And now i am a Daisy enjoyer, believer, preacher and worshipper

My raccoon boyo all he wants is to get the money he needs to keep your needs and his own store, has two kids to feed (Relation ambigous, love certain) and is easly the kindest loan shark in posibbly ALL OF FICTION, never giving you interests in your debt, giving you a job with zero previous experience and flatout gives you expansions to your house, i wish some of the games gave you a chance to have activities with him like with the villagers, for the time being, Tom Nook... you are vindicated in my heart

Sylvain from Fire Emblem: Three Houses immediately came to mind. Guy was a creep who viewed women as a tally on a card. His later supports made him my favourite character, even above Marianne and Edelgard.

Also, Muffy from Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life. I was amongst the group of people who hated her at release, because she started with the most hearts and was flirty. It was a combination of Another Wonderful Life and simply growing up that made me realize she's actually a great character, and the problem was me.

Nokia Shiramine from Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth totally fits the bill. Or as I like to call her? Cellphone. :3

Pink is definitely not my color (but it is close to my favorite hot color), and originally I didn't like her more forward, bossy personality and her crying over becoming a hacker against her will. In time though she reminded me of my childhood bestie's twin sister, in a way, both having a similar personality.

There's depth to her in spite of being a ditz, and a kind nature to her in spite of being headstrong. The fact that she puts on a brave face but is scared deep down is relatable and worth my empathy. She really does love her Digimon buddies, Agumon and Gabumon. And when A Certain Badass Scene* happened, I was cheering her on.

Plus, if I recall correctly, she's got an appetite. Girl after my own heart. Or stomach. :9

Agumon and Gabumon Warp / DNA-Digivolving into Omnimon, and appearing behind a badass-posing Nokia.

Majima Goro from Yakuza series.
I started the series chronologically with Yakuza 0.
Majima there seemed to me to be the type who lets himself be humiliated, generally such a mediocrity.... His transformation and who he became later strongly surprised me and I like his crazy self - mad dog of shimano

Coco Atarashi, TWEWY.

She was originally just made to shill microtransactions (I think?) on rereleased versions of the game, her design stood out wayyy too much compared to the rest of the cast. She got a whole side plot that tied here into the main plot of the first game, which was just dumb, retconned a great ending and was badly written imo. I mean, can you blame fans (and myself) for finding this goblin insufferable?

Come NTWEWY, the second game, and I actually found myself enjoying her. Her " like lmao jk, totez hilar. suuuper sketch get rekt amirite" manner of speech was noticeably toned down, and I didn't entirely hate that she got involved into the main plot, but also didn't overstay her welcome. If TWEWY3 ever happens (hopefully it will), I'd love to see her again, because her dynamic with Minamimoto is pretty fun.

Also her design got a major upgrade, which looks really pretty. It's more grounded in reality but still shows her extra personality.

Probably Poison from Final Fight/Street Fighter. Never cared for this character until I played USFIV, interesting zoning strategies using the whip. still not my favorite by a long shot, just tolerable now.

when i was first getting into sonic through the internet, all i had to go off of when it comes to characters was their design, their basic concept, their main theme, and what i could make out from the few cutscenes i watched (this was when i was still learning english through cutscene compilations and peanutbuttergamer). so my favorite character was silver (i always thought his character theme and concept were 10/10), with orbot, cubot, maybe eggman, and tails not far behind, and i din't really care about other characters much.

the only character i disliked was big, because i'm more of a cat person than a dog person and i was sad that such a good animal was wasted on what i felt was a lame design. since then, i've come to appreciate him for his "just a guy who inexplicably happens to be where the action is" status as well as his design. i still don't like his theme though.

I have two, the first is Monkey from Acceleracers

I initially disliked him because I thought that he was going to be that character who sell the team location to the drones but in Breaking Point he became one of my favorites characters because he proved his usefulness to the team by creating Sparky.

The other one is C.L.U from Tron, his Legacy version

I initially though that he was the generic villain who wants to dominate everything, but when I discovered that he was bad because he was only following the order that his creator gave him, he became one of my favorites villains of all time.

Nero DMC5 (also known as
Deadweight lol
)

I mean I never played DMC4 but I like him and his theme in DMC5. That intro was great. I mean not to the masterpiece level of DMC3 but its fucking great. I prefer Dante but Nero is pretty cool.

Squall in FF8 begins his journey as a massive jerk, gradually comes to terms with being a massive jerk, and eventually stops being a massive jerk. 10/10, would recommend
He's the most realistic portrayal of a shitty teenager in all of gaming and his character arc is great. All my homies love Squall.

Plus she's hot

Just finished my first Side Adventure in TOTK, i can't say i expected her to be added this fast to this list

Cece from the Hateno Election Side Adventure, she is introduced as a total B(Expletive) that wants the entire Hateno Village with her fashion, the fact that the mayor actively opposes her due to the harm the crops suffer due to the noise her boutique does didn't exactly buy symphaty, as soon as i was given back control, i even shot an arrow to her precious hat in the counter, however, as the miniplot advances, i found some stuff that made see in a more light path

For starters, she grew in the Village, and actually hides in a silo near her boutique to eat some Hateno harvest, and during her own mission of "Recruitment" of voters, she never does anything rotten and is overall nice (Aside of some expectable "Ninini people that doesn't wear my clothings are freaks"), the mayor isn't exactly different from her, since finding that both has plans to actually improve the village gave the story a refreshing "Both sides of the upgrade and tradition debacle are right" twist to this kind of stories, also she gabe me the hat, not using it, but the gesture is still there

Sylvando from DQ11.
He was abrasively flamboyant and it annoyed me at first, but I ended up really liking him.

Female Corrin. Not in Fire Emblem itself, but in Smash 4's context.

When i first watched Corrin's trailer in Smash 4 i was speechless.........in a bad way. I wanted someone like Isaac or K.Rool, so when i saw that 1 or the 2 final characters for Smash was a fucking Fire Emblem character after we just got Roy, and her game was not even released internationally at the time felt like a punch in the damn gut. The fact that i don't care about Fire Emblem as a series made it twice as bad, so you can guess i was not super excited....like, are you telling me that the ONE Nintendo Newcomer we got in Smash 4's DLC is THIS?!

But after playing as Her in Smash Ultimate i have come to appreciate her moveset. It's simplistic yet very unique, and the Dragon Transformation is implemented perfeclty, far more natural than most Post-Brawl newcomers who feel way too gimmicky and unorthodox and bloated with extra mechanics (Steve, Min-Min, Kazuya) I actually prefer Corrin's moveset over Robin's (since im not a fan of Robin's limited Magic usage, making it more of a hinderance than a reason to play as him) and outside of having another damn Counter as a Down B, i can't say it's bad at all.

Also her design (Female Corrin anyway, the Male one is meh) is great, i love her long hair, her pointy ears and her really cute face. She is as cute as she is hot. It's just too bad she comes from a very divisive Fire Emblem Game, but at least in Smash's World, she has redeemed herself in my eyes.
