Can we have an area for RGT creatives to plug their non-video game stuffs?

I figure I am the best person to ask about this because my "product" is free of charge.

It would be cool if we could have a dedicated area to post a thread to shamelessly plug an etsy or itch.io page (or whatever) for people to check out. I am sure people here sell crafts or build custom things that they would like to show off (and perhaps find a customer or 2) to the RGT crowd.

I think having a category to post threads to would work better than trying to do it within a single thread where things would get lost in comments and what not.

Am i crazy or does this idea have legs?

I like the idea of people being able to display the things they make in their free time as a side thing, something people can look up about you that's not in-your-face advertising.
Man, people make stuff.
So cool, I'm almost envious.
I make things, but mostly just lewd memes.. ?
Ain't pluggin' those here though. ?

In my case I am making a tabletop skirmish game that i have no intention of charging for. I do need people who might be interested in playing it to do so and give me feed back so I can improve it.

That said I would not have an issue with someone putting up their Etsy page to maybe make a gil or 2. If nothing else I would do some window shopping :)

I think it's a good idea in general, though I'm not sure if involving being able to directly have money involved would be a good thing, since it often leads to drama. I know this sounds vague but I'm not sure how to word it properly. But for example, I think it'd be great to be able to showcase your art, but if someone were to commission you, they'd have to do it through your "normal" platform, and not use RGT as that. I'm not sure though, might just be me who feels this way. It does tend to lead to drama and fights where some artists grow a really big ego, while others get really sad because they think their art sucks just because people don't want to pay for it.

As long as it's structured properly, like a gallery of sorts, I think it could be an excellent way for people to show off their different kinds of work!

I was making a medieval fantasy tabletop RPG when I was locked up, I thought it might be cool to have a tabletop RPG for people in prison to play, so I made all the pieces out of material you could get in prison, like the little cardboard coffee cup holder things had the character sheet made of the part where you mark off Cream, Sugar, etc.

I didn't finish, but if I had another week or two I probably would have. Think it could catch on? ?

Right! All you would do here is offer the link to the itch.io page or Patreon or whatever. It would basically be a bulletin board.

Honestly there is a pretty big crowd for the print and play board game. That's basically what my game is. I couldn't promise success or anything but you wont know unless you try. :)

Yes, I agree with this.

It should also NOT being open to everyone -- don't use RGT as a jump board to get people subscribed to your YT channel/DeviantArt page/Etsy store. Be a part of the community... post at least, say, 100 times over three months or something (hell, that's how we enforce the entirety cosmetic custom titles!).

What ever requirements on the Mod side would be totally understandable. But also the point of putting it in its own area is that people don't have to go and look if they don't want to.

Maybe (if its possible) you can silence the category so it doesn't show up on the Latest Threads and such.

These are all valid and reasonable points, and it seems that the argument boils down to this;

Is it detrimental to RGT to allow people to link to their sites to sell wares to make money?

I just thought of something, people can already put links in their signature, so the big trick would be finding the line between use and abuse.

Well, I think you just answered your own question. ?

I would probably say Yes.
At its core, this is a forum for talking about video games. Other subjects and topics are fine of course, but things often change when money is involved, and usually for the worse.
I'm not one to use the "slippery slope fallacy" as an argument, it's more just that I think we should be careful as to how to approach this, if at all.

Then again, the more I think about it, this space already exists. People already use their status updates to showcase their art, among other things. As long as this is done "for fun" I think it's a good thing. I don't think people should be allowed to spam their status with "commission templates" or similar posts. You could have a link to your art sites like @middler just described. But if someone would want to commission you for something, they should have to do it from their art site, and not on their status update. Of course, asking someone if they do commissions could be fine, but then they should be linked to their portfolio site of choice. This would be a good way to avoid both the mods having to deal with people claiming they got scammed or whatever, and to prevent people from using their status solely to shill their work.
