a lot of indie fps games that try to replicate the old school fps have been released what are your favourites?

mine is the citadel. and its sequel beyond citadel which combines the art style of old schlocky anime movies. (you know the ones. md geist, genocyber, ninja scrolls, etc.)

I vastly prefer doomer/boomer shooters over doom2016/eternal. Doom 2016 was, compared to OG doom, one of the most agnonizingly boring games I’ve ever played. Just made me itch to play a treyarch CoD because you could finish those levels on a few minutes and see cool WWII set pieces that my history-coded brain prefers over generic lifeless sci fi.
Sorry for the rant. I’m not usually this negative.

Hmm, there's quite a few that I like that would fit that description...

I'm gonna go with Ion Fury
I think that one nails the feel of my favourite retro shooters like Blood and Shadow Warrior the best.

The levels are definitely too long and it could have done with a couple more enemy types (and less skull spiders), but I genuinely loved the time I spent with it.

I never really considered ULTRAKILL a boomer shooter, personally.
The aesthetic is a throwback, sure, but the gameplay is more in line with Doom Eternal than just about anything else.

That said, I guess "boomer shooter" is a pretty vague descriptor in the first place. I always thought of it as a gameplay style.

Hell of a game either way!

I've played Ion Fury and Hedon so far, I haven't played any others yet but I have a ton of my watch lists on steam! There's way too many that have come out now but they all generally seem really good!

I for one love 2016/Eternal, and I'm excited for the new one. But I can see where you're coming from.
I'm completely the opposite, I can't stand any more "feels like real war" stuff, no matter if they are classics or new ones.

ULTRAKILL is 100% a DMC-Shooter and not a boomer shooter. Everything screams "STYLE" in that game.

Facts. Ultrakill has too much of a modern feel to be inspired by old shooters. It's more of it's own thing which is a mix of dvil may cry and doom eternal.

The thing with sci fi is that the genre is so overdone that it's not very easy to stand out. There are thousands of shooters with a samey scifi art style and environments so the setting has to stand out in other ways.

Using the citadel as and example here, it's a game that has a generic defeat the mechanical angels (demons in beyond citadel) but the level desing and art style combined with the music and the disturbing gore give it a kind of surreal quality. The game also has some simulation element's in it's gunplay for example: your gun can jam, and certain weapons in beyond citadel need more work to be reloaded. (Reload each shell one at a time with a certain type of shotgun) Your charracter also has to eat and they die extremely quickly. After a while it almost resembles a survival horror game.

I quite enjoy HROT, it unites two things I like: quake 1 and the horrifying history of the soviet union + eastern european stuff
