Bishoujo Super Street Fighter II: Glamor Queen and the New Femme Fatales is a Combo ROM Hack of the Sega Genesis version of Super Street Fighter II, where some of the fighters are replaced with female characters from various franchises. It could be one of the first of its kind, like the numerous ROM Hacks of Streets of Rage 2 & 3. An intent is to make the game easier to beat.

The project started when I was tweeting Game Genie codes for MD SSF2. I wanted to see if I could make Old Sagat's cancels possible. People were taking notice of my tweets in early 2023, so I experimented with editing the game further. I wasn't expecting to grab people's attention from editing the game. I put my blood, sweat and tears into making this.

Early in the making, I wanted this to draw inspiration from a lot of Champion Edition bootlegs, but I later found that the MD SF2 games weren't coded to have more than one projectile per player at once, so I decided to make juggles possible.

The fighter replacements, in order that they were made: Blanka is changed to Roll from Mega Man, Dhalsim is changed to Mai Shiranui from Fatal Fury and King of Fighters, E. Honda is changed to Choi Jadoo from Hello Jadoo, Fei Long is changed to Emily from Unholy Night: The Darkness Hunter, Dee Jay is changed to Madonna from Makeruna! Makendou 2, Boxer is changed to Avra Yumeno and Belva Lina, both original creations, with the former being created for this ROM Hack. Jadoo and Avra's sprites were not cheap, and the other characters were given several newly drawn sprites overall.

Roll is a lethal joke character who is a one trick pony, Mai is a no brainer of a character choice with a relatively balanced moveset, Jadoo is given the Chibi Back Dash, can double jump and can cheese you with her Hundred Hand Slap and Headbutt, Emily can Air Dash and kill you from throws, Madonna is an insane combo character who can take you out quickly, Avra has high priority normals that do block damage, and Belva can use MvC2 Sentinel's flight with no transitions.

Upon its first release, I had shared it in ROMHack Plaza, which to many is seen as a successor to ROMHacking.net, which seemingly had its submissions closed at the time. Within a couple months, it managed to surpass 2,000 downloads. But 5 months later, out of nowhere, it got taken down from ROMHack Plaza along with all the other ROM Hacks I shared there. It also got rejected when I tried to submit it to RHDI. But I have since managed to get this ROM Hack mirrored onto ROMHacking.net, whose official Twitter account used to tweet about new additions to the site.

BSSF2: Glamor Queen had spawned a lot of playthroughs in its first couple of months when it was released. Many of the videos I saw would either use external cheats or spam the same moves over and over again, which to me is boring to watch. It also means that they don't take advantage of the other things that the characters have to offer. Nowadays, it's extremely difficult for me to convince anyone to play this ROM Hack. For reference, CorpseGrinder's Battletoads ROM Hacks have their own leaderboards on SRC, as well as a good amount of leaderboard entries from different players.

As for the speedrun categories and rules, I went with a mix of Super Street Fighter II and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3's leaderboards. Each character has their own sub-category, and the difficulty must be on 4-stars or higher. "Baton Pass" as a category name (named after a Pokémon speedrun category), where you use all the characters in a single Arcade run, might be subject to change.

So is this ROM Hack fun to play? You can decide on it. The ROM Hack certainly spoils its players. I couldn't find any other Street Fighter II ROM Hacks on Speedrun.com, excluding the Champion Edition bootlegs, of course. This ROM Hack is not to be taken seriously. Fingers crossed it gets added to Fightcade.

Some features include:

-Fighter Replacements
-Charge Times Disabled, Air Specials
-Back Dashes (Emily and Madonna can also Forward Dash)
-Guard Cancels into Dashes that can be followed with Special Moves
-Easier Arcade Mode (CPU no longer damage cheats)
-New Moves, such as Zangief's Coconut Thunder and Sagat's Tiger Dive
-Getting hit out of Empty Jumps by non-knockdown attacks makes you drop down
-Stage Select in Arcade Mode
-Easy Death Combos
-Access Debug Menu by selecting Options, and holding the A or Mode Buttons
-Refill Lifebars and Time Limit in Versus Mode by holding both Players' Mode Buttons
-Random CPU Colors in Arcade Mode, by holding Mode button
-Switch to the character defeated with Down+A+B+C
-Switch to the same character with Up+A+B+C
-Activate V-ISM Normals/Belva/Nightmare Dictator with Back+X+Y+Z+B or Back+Y+Z+B+C (essentially like the UMK3 Human Smoke code)
-Access Boss Rush by selecting Arcade and holding B

Play this ROM Hack if:
  • You want a SF2 ROM Hack that changes up the roster.
  • You like infinites or death combos that are extremely easy to do.
  • You like mechanics outside of what SF2 normally has to offer.
  • You want to end rounds in a few seconds from one correct read.
  • You like fighters where knowledge checks play a large role.
  • You like ROM Hacks that take advantage of unused data.

Don't play this ROM Hack if:
  • You like spamming projectiles or doing fireball traps.
  • You don't want ROM Hacks or fan games that teach you bad habits.
  • Random jank or bugs can get in the way of enjoying this.
  • You're looking for good character balance.
  • You primarily use Ryu or Ken. They get shut down in this ROM Hack.
  • You dislike Lolis and/or the heavy emphasis on panty shots.

Avra looks really nice. This would be even more interesting if no vanilla characters remained at all.

Looks like a fairly competent hack. Not into the loli thing, not with panty shots.
But I'm not some holier-than-thou schmuck either. They aren't real.
It looks well done for what it is. I might give it a try. Thanks for the info

It kind embraces the whole rainbow/bootleg balance idea (that is there's little to none), but it's part of the hack's identity, kind of similar to a M.U.G.E.N experience within the constraints of the SSF2 engine.

Fair point. I used to play Beats of Rage via M.U.G.E.N. years ago, until Streets 4 came out

It's a lot of manual tile work for just one character. This could be considered a stepping stone in ROM Hacking Street Fighter II.

I could make a full roster replacement in the future, but it's a whole lot of work. The easiest way out would be using my own characters that are unrotoscoped model renders, since things such as sprites and portraits cost a lot of money to commission.

Yeah I can imagine, I'm not trying throw shade on your work or anything, I just think total conversions are really cool.

Oh no. I'm with @RageBurner on this.
This is a massive effort, and you have done a great job with the videos and screens you posted.
I can do nothing but applaud your work and effort. <Stands and claps> Come on, Sword, give them a round of applause

As for Avra, someone offered help with art, then rejected the character choices I presented to him. It led to the creation of Avra. At first, I was going to change M. Bison/Balrog into a female Boxer, but I later decided on something more creative. So I had someone make a model sheet of the character.

It was an absolute nightmare finding artists willing to draw her sprites.

She looks really nice, though I have to say the idea of a female boxer is also very interesting to me. Or maybe turning Zangief into a huge female wrestler, haha.

Jokes aside, I would like a petite grappler like Lilith from Vanguard Princess, or even Wendy from Rushing Beat Ran/Brawl Brothers.

Balrog/Vega (Claw) and T. Hawk were the hardest characters to give interesting changes to. I made Claw's Punch Back Flip into Flip Kicks, made T. Hawk's Tomahawk Buster electrocute opponents and changed a few of his jumping normals to use different sprites.

I'm also amazed you changed the announcer voices and such. It always bugged me that in the vanilla game Guile shared the voice of the announcer.

Oh yeah, the "Big Bird" announcer. I didn't like Guile's Sonic Boom voice clip in SSF2 either, so I replaced it with his CPS-1 voice clip. There's like 47 announcer voice clips, plus one more if you count the announcer saying Belva's name. Avra's voice is the same as the announcer. Her voice draws inspiration from Tikal's voice in Sonic Adventure.

Yeah my favorite voice for Guile is also his pre-SSF one too. Wish there was a patch for this that was compatible with the PS2 version of HSF2.

I kind of see why. Don't get me wrong, I like the overall aesthetic of the character, very reminiscent of Zatanna Zatara from DC Comics. I like it myself personally. But the hair and half-coat would be a pain in the ass to animate, depending on the number of frames per move. Again, not downplaying the design. I personally love magician-type girls. But from a making sprite point of view, I can see why they might not want to.

I just learned about two new games from this, neat

Made a matchmaking channel on the ROM Hack's Discord server, after a long period of hesitation. Hopefully somehow I can make a scene for this, but it will not be easy at all. There was only one occasion when we managed to a get a set of this ROM Hack on Fightcade, by replacing the md_ssf2u ROM. But honestly, I'm pretty much on the verge of moving on to other projects I want to pursue.

There's no way I'm making another one of these anytime soon. I still need to do research on more characters' data. If I decide to use all OC's (since I prefer OC's) or make a full fledged Loli fighter, no one would like it. Some inclusions in this hack connect the game further to the Diaper Girl Derby series of games I made.

If I do ever make a followup to this hack, I would do the polar opposite of what this hack aims to do in terms of difficulty and try to incorporate a few different mechanics.
