I'm wondering if there's anyone out there who's tried all of these:
Polished Crystal (gbc)
crystal Advance redux (gba)
heart & soul (gba)
silver rival (gba)

And i was wondering which was the best

I'm a big fan of Sacred Gold / Storm Silver but they might not be exactly what you're looking for. It's a more complete version of the game but it also increases the difficulty.

I just very recently played through all of Crystal Clear with my gal and while there's a lot of great stuff in it in terms of QoL and gameplay- I can't recommend it. By the end I sincerely regretted giving this to her as her first full Pokemon playthrough.
Primarily I was really sick of the Discord OCs showing up everywhere with their teams full of shinies and the open world nature of the game removed all of the dungeons and story line elements so it was basically completely directionless.
Also there's an OC that blocks you before the OC Elite 4 and his fucking Pokemon are stronger than the E4's basically. So you get beat by him then feel like you need to go get the rest of the Badges and then by the time you come back you're over-leveled.

So yeah, do not recommend unless you've done many others and are just looking for more.

I had already written off that one

Having played all three, I gotta say that Crystal offers the best overall experience — those animations and small bug fixes did a world of difference (even though, in true Game Freak fashion, they axed the built-in clock "hack" while they were at it).

What ‘bout vanilla NDS remakes HeartGold/SoulSilver?

I’m interested in pair parallel play-through trading and battling along the way with my mate. Since linking GBC games in emus appears a bit challenging… And I’m not sure which GBA hack supports direct cable link properly…
Has anybody tried that?

I think Polished Crystal is pretty legit. Really enjoyed my time with it but I will say that it’s “harder” than vanilla so keep that in mind I guess.

Aurora Crystal if it ever comes out.

I have two favorite ways, granted, they are purely improvement

For the OG one, i picked Polished, it takes irt further than your usual "Vanilla+" romhack, allowing you to customize what parts you want to be updated (E.G if you want physical split and Fairy type) but also being a great updating with QOL even if you don't care for the modernization, the game has two variants, one if you want the game Modernized and another if you want it "Classic"

For the Remake, i chose Refined Gold Overhaul, obvious full Dex aside, it adds a cluster of changes that left me content, my fav must be how they handle the infamous "curve" once you reach Ecutreak, for those unaware once you reach that city the game splits in three routes you can tacke in any order once you beat Morti, infamously the level curve lowers there, making grinding a "Heh" grind, here they retain the fredoom, BUT for every badge attained, trainers get better Pokemon, making the grind slightly less long, also the patch is harder, but not in "Only Competitive can enjoy it" way

Pokemon Perfect Crystal for the original

don't know if there's a complete Pokedex hack for heartgold/soulsilver, although drayano's hack isn't as difficult as let's say: renegade platinum

Beware though, aside from gba remakes that don't follow 1:1 the original, neither version runs at 60fps, although the johto games felt a lot more bearable than the sinnoh games

I'm not a purist

I am not a gen 2 fan by any means, but Polished Crystal was _extremely_ good and is one of the only ways I would play Gen 2 these days.

The other happens to be HG/SS, which is the best set of remakes GF ever pulled together.

Yup, gets my vote. The DS remakes are probably the best pokemon games ever made imo.

Romhacks blow them out of the water. The best official Pokémon game still has pissbaby difficulty, the same exact boring low effort storyline that they've been recycling for 30 years, a terrible exp curve, and cash grab bullshit like version exclusives. Romhacks truly humiliate the official games and people are missing out by ignoring them.

Yeah you're right about difficulty for sure lol.
