My first console when i was a little kid in the early 90s was a Sears Video Arcade which played Atari 2600 games on a small portable black and white tv. I had a lot of favorite games on the system because my grandfather used to own it and gave me and my family the console and games with it. My favorite one was a Defender clone based on the second Star Wars movie, The Empire Strikes Back. I still have the console too. But the rest of the games were sold off years ago by my parents. Anyway over the years after Atari gave up making games for all their consoles, fans picked it up and programmed all sorts of crazy games for it, even decades later! Some of them were even officially made by the original devs like with Air World completing the Sword Quest saga. There's a whole AVGN episode about that. But i'd like to draw attention to some lesser known ones that you may or may not have played or even heard about. First off, there's Zippy The Porcupine. Look familiar?

That's right. Sonic. ON THE ATARI 2600! THIS IS INSANE!!! IT EVEN HAS 4 ZONES! IT HAS LOOPS! IT HAS BOSSES! IT HAS MUSIC! HOW??? Stuff like this blows my freaking mind! Yes, it's derpy looking, but it's a demake on the oldest console that could probably handle something like this. It plays well, which is the important thing!

Next I want to show you a Mario game on the Atari. Now Mario is no stranger to Atari, he had a few titles on their consoles before, most notably Donkey Kong and Mario Bros. (the arcade game). But one fan decided to make a legit demake of Super Mario Bros. from the NES!

AGAIN, WHAT SORCERY IS THIS??? FULL LEVELS AND BOSS FIGHTS? INCREDIBLE STUFF!

Think the amazing demakes end with just Mario and Sonic? Oho no, there's more! DOOM and HALO both got awesome demakes for the console!

fans even took it upon themselves to even fix Atari games that weren't up to snuff back then. When Pac-Man first hit the scene, everyone was playing it. The game made so much money that it was a no brainer it would end up on Atari like all the other arcade games at the time. I mean so many of them translated so well to the console. Space Invaders was a smash hit! But Pac-Man ended up being one of the worst Atari games ever made. So decades later, a fan went out of their way to fix that.

I have more, but I want to know what you guys think!

I've been rather impressed with the Movie cart. Basically you load an SD cart into a 2600 cart and actually plays the movie. Obviously it's not going to be of the best quality, but it's still incredibly impressive

yeah i found that over on Internet Archive. No audio, but it's like a silent movie!

I remember seeing the Colecoversion Donkey Kong in gaming magazines and wishing we got a Colecovision. We bought the Coleco Donkey Kong for our Atari 2600 and was sorely disappointed. Donkey Kong was a red blob, only two levels and didn't even have the ending sequence so you can't really save Pauline. If by some miracle we had gotten this homebrew version back then with all 4 levels (the Colecovision one only had 3...heck...even the Famicom/NES version had only 3) and even had the rescue sequence, my kid self's mind would have exploded.

P.S. The video had some graphic glitches with the homebrew version...but I've seen videos where it worked better. Maybe it's his emulator?
